Russetpaw's determination was admirable and Sleepypaw was admittedly, kind of impressed. Sleepypaw reared up on her hind legs but before she could do anything, she was hit with a flurry of paw strikes and suddenly she was crumpled to the floor, (as dramatically as she could muster)with a paw on her forehead. Sleepypaw could swear her eyes were filled with stars as she slumped, her eyelids fluttering closed momentarily.
"You've killed me, Russetwing." she sighed, opening an eye to look at Russetpaw, a smile still on her maw as she lay there. Overall she felt good about her first real sparring match, she knew there were many things to learn. She regretted not reaching out to her older family members for sparring tips. The calico had been more interested in talking and sleeping than watching and sparring but that was why she was an apprentice wasn't it? To learn more!

Blazefang padded over to the apprentices. “Great work, both of you! Silverwing, any remarks?” She purred a bit as she nudged Sleepypaw. “You did great, especially for a first try. That was close right up to the end!”

Sleepypaw collapsed dramatically, and Russetpaw (no- Russetwing, why did it fill her with such joy that Sleepypaw- no, Sleepystar remembered the game they’d played?) bounced from paw to paw, her victory filling her with new energy. Her form, unbeknownst to her, had been… sloppy, to say the least, focusing more on just overwhelming her opponent rather than any real strategy, but it had worked!
“Thanks, Blazefang!” Russetpaw purred. “Yeah Sleepypaw, y’ nearly ‘ad me there for a sec’! ‘An we learn ta hunt, pretty please? I promise I’ve enoug’ energy ta learn! An’ Sleepypaw does too, right Sleeps?” She employed her best puppy eyes at her mentor, assuming that there was no more to teach about fighting, at least today. Right? She’d won- that was all there was to it.

Silverwing had to suppress a cry as Sleepypaw yanked on her opponent's tail. That seemed really violent for a friendly spar, but in the end Russetpaw seemed fine. The rest of the battle was rather tame in comparison, which was a blessing to be sure considering who Russetpaw was. Ah, they were still calling themselves Sleepystar and Russetwing? That filled the silver she-cat with a little joy, but that paled in comparison to the joy she felt as Russetpaw won the bout. It was impossible to stay still, especially since every ounce of her being wanted to congratulate Russetpaw and shower her with praise for the victory, but wouldn't that be some kind or poor sportsmanship? More than anything she didn't want the other apprentice to feel like her performance was any less impressive.
"Russetpaw, you were fantastic out there! That first hit, the way you controlled the fight, that LAST ATTACK!" Silverwing's voice grew as she spoke, the joy that she had wanted to hide until later spilling out of her. Ah, that wasn't very nice, but how could she not comment on her own apprentice's skills? She was of course still sloppy in her movements, but for a foundation it was incredible! More praise, she could praise Russetpaw later, alone. "And Sleepypaw, you did really well withstanding that onslaught! The way you used your speed to your advantage was very impressive, that fight was really close!" If these apprentice's showed such skill from only one training session, then Windclan's future seemed incredibly bright. Maybe Sleepystar could become a reality. What was this? Russetpaw wanted to learn to hunt already? Perhaps it wasn't a great idea after their first spar, but there was no way she could say no to Russetpaw. That's going to become a problem, isn't it? Well no matter, she had brought Blazefang, the older warrior could make the call. "Well, hunting was supposed to be something I shared with just you, but if Sleepypaw wants to learn from the best hunter in Windclan I don't see why not. Unless you have something to say of course, Blazefang?" Silverwing shot a sly grin at her mentor, knowing that if she refused the apprentices would have someone else to complain to.

She had felt like she was floundering and flopping about like a beetle on its back. But hearing that she did great, that she was impressive even. The compliments went to her head a little and she was suddenly puffing her chest. They were good. Sleepypaw took a deep breath and got back to her paws, the admiration of the two mentors filling her soul with energy she had never felt before. It was impossible for her to be upset listening to Silverwing praise Russetpaw. The way that Sleepy saw it; if anyone tried to get a piece of her, they'd have to go through Russetpaw first. It made her ecstatic to have a friend that could fight so well.
Hunting? Did she say they could learn how to hunt today too? "I'm so down." she mewed without a moment of hesitation, Sleepy saw Russetpaw's pleading look and tried her best to mimick it while looking to the mentors.

Blazefang pretended to deliberate for a minute. “Oh… all right, I suppose so,” she mewed, a playful grin spreading across her muzzle. “The noise of the spar probably scared the prey away though, so let’s try a different spot.” The ginger began walking with purpose in her stride, a specific area in mind where she’d picked up some prey-scent the previous day.

“Yesyesyesyesyes! We’re gonna learn ta hunt!” Bouncing on her paws, Russetpaw bounded after their mentors, bumping Sleepypaw’s shoulder as she went. “I’m gonna track down a biiig rabbit, soooo big that it’ll feed the whole Clan! Or, well, at least me. Or maybe even a hare! But they can kick ya real hard in the ribs, an’ I’ve heard that they fight back all ferocious-like, or run so fast no-cat can keep up! Or I could even catch- Silverwing, didn’t you say you almost caught a frog, once? I wanna do that! I’ll catch all the froggos, show ShadowClan what’s for an’ all that!”
Heedless of the whole don’t-talk-loudly-while-hunting Russetpaw rambled on. Hadn’t Silverwing said once that she was one of the best hunters in the Clan? Russetpaw just had to live up to that! She’d be the second-best hunter in the Clan, then! She’d catch so many rabbits that Shrikestar would have to make her a warrior early-like.

Ah, another chance to show off to the new generation, what a delight! Silverwing kept pace with Blazefang, listening to Russetpaw enthusiastic spiel with a smile on her face. The mention of frogs made Silverwing flinch. She hadn't ever seen one before, and her attempt at finding one had lead her over the border. The thought of what might still be coming to her for that time was scary, why did Russetpaw have to bring up frogs? "N-no! Never a frog, haven't seen one! I have caught birds before though, that was pretty fun!" Blazefang had been there for her first capture of a bird, when she had proudly declared herself Brackenwing's left wing. Time seemed to just fly too fast around Windclan. The apprentice's loud voice was surely scaring more prey away, so much for teaching by example. "You've offended me, Russetpaw, but I'll let it go for now. Almost caught? I've never failed a catch in my life!" It was the thing she took the most pride in, every hunt had been successful, all prey she set her sights on were captured! "Now, you two, show me your best hunting crouches! Remember to stay low to the ground, but don't let your tail drag. Ears up, you need to be aware of your surroundings, predators could always be around!"

Nothing came naturally to Sleepypaw, although she wished it did. Her crouch was fine, but nothing to write home about, her haunches were too high and her nose far too close to the ground, it looked more like she was stretching and getting ready to go to bed, than preparing to launch at prey. She shook her head realizing everything was all wrong. With her crouch, if any prey did happen to come along, she'd be stumbling over her paws before she could run after it. There wasn't any way she could capture prey with her current stance.
When she was a kit everything seemed to be easier, she didn't think about a crouch before she did it, but now when in front of two senior warriors and her best friend, she couldn't seem to get into a good crouching position. At least, not one she was proud of.
"Uh..like this?" she asked, knowing it wasn't quite right, but it was as good as she was going to get at the moment.

Blazefang couldn’t help but smile at Sleepypaw’s attempt. “Almost,” she mewed. “Just remember, keep low enough for tall Greenleaf grasses to hide you, but high enough for the wind to pass under your belly.” She dropped into a hunting crouch. Not necessarily perfect, she was no expert senior warrior, but definitely the posture of a warrior with plenty of experience. Scenting a rabbit, she began to stalk, providing a full demonstration. When she was close enough, the ginger warrior launched into a fluid pounce. Her paws hit the ground and her jaws latched onto her prey in a quick one-two motion. Turning around, she padded back to the group. “Not that hard, just takes a little practice. And don’t be afraid to chase it if it spots you.”

Russetpaw’s ears flicked back, for a moment, had she offended Silverwing?, but her mentor continued, so she was obviously joking. Right- the young apprentice listened intently with ears pricked and eyes wide. Body close to the ground, but not too close- tail off the earth, but not too high, ears pricked- eyes focused, but always be aware- it was a lot, for the russet-pelted apprentice, but she was absolutely determined to learn.
Thank the stars, Sleepypaw went out on a limb (figuratively, neither apprentice had even seen a tree before) and tried out her crouch first, and Russetpaw watched, intently. Blazefang said a few words- (green-leaf grasses? How high did the grasses get in green-leaf?) and Russetpaw figured it was her turn to try, now.
Ears rotating like a hare’s, Russetpaw stumbled into a crouch, adjusting her position as she thought over each tidbit of information. It- it wasn’t bad, she guessed, but it felt stiff, and she maybe was thinking too hard about it? She flicked her tail against the earth impatiently.
“Sleepypaw, can you go first and I watch?” The other apprentice was older, after all, even if age didn’t matter as much as it used to.

Silverwing had wanted to be the one to correct Sleeypaw's crouch, but with Blazefang properly demonstrating not just a proper stance, but how to stalk as well it was hard to complain. Especially when she was being given a chance to watch her mentor in action once more. Even now Blazefang looked magnificent, the light that caught on her pelt making her seem almost like a mass of moving flames. If Brackenwing and Whisperear were pretty, Blazefang was absolutely gorgeous. The only thing that pulled Silverwing out of her trance was Russetpaw's voice, reminding the warrior that this was still a training session. "Hold on, one second." Silverwing pushed lightly on Sleepypaw, guiding the apprentice to lower herself a tad more, and fixing small mistakes in her stance. "Blazefang taught you how to stalk, find us something good to add to the pile, Sleepypaw!" With the words of encouragement out of the way, Silverwing took a couple steps back allowing the apprentice to begin her first hunt.

Sleepypaw hesitated but nodded. Well. She was the older apprentice. And Russetpaw had started their spar, she might as well start the hunting. Plus watching Blazefang take down a rabbit gave her more confidence in her own attempt. The calico gave Silverwing a grateful glance as she adjusted her stance and she committed it to memory as best as she could. Alright, it was time.
The scent of a living hare was quite different than a dead one, at least to her, but as she moved slightly away from the group there was no mistaking the brown creature ahead of her. It was sitting on the moor, back to her but ears perked. She knew she would have to be as quiet as possible, so when she crouched she made sure her belly didn't touch the ground, and her paws were light as she stalked forward. Suddenly the wind changed and the hare perked up on its hind legs, and Sleepypaw knew she had to give chase at that moment, or it would be over. Curse the wind. She had to learn how to prepare for that next time. The apprentice got as close as she could and launched forward.
As she launched, the hare gave chase. And they were off to the races. The apprentice huffed as she pushed her legs faster, stars these things could run! However, Sleepypaw had her long legs to her advantage and she caught up in no time and pushed off the moor, her big paws wrapping around the hare. The brown rodent squirmed under her grasp, one of its long legs lashing out and kicking Sleepypaw square in the jaw making her bite her tongue. With a loud yowl in pain, she forcefully clamped her teeth down on the hare's neck until she tasted blood, giving it a little shake just for good measure before bringing her catch back to her clanmates. The apprentice dropped it on the ground and rubbed her lower jaw with a paw, her sides heaving as she recovered from her run, "Stupid thing kicked me before I could finish it off." she confessed, frowning deeply, "What do we do after we kill it? Do we have to bury it?"
Rolling to catch that hare...success! Cost 3 stamina.
