Impatient [C]

Blackpaw stood at the edge of camp, raking her claws repeatedly down some poor pine tree. It seemed everyone was insistent on being late, first Fogpaw and now the cats she was supposed to be hunting with. If she had to wait here another second she'd just leave and go hunting on her own. Bark flaked from the tree as she slashed at it, little chips of wood getting tangled in her heavily feathered paws. Her tail swished angrily from side to side. Why was she always the one who had to wait? She'd like to see Birdchaser standing someone up like this. She wanted to hunt, and now. Her ears flicked restlessly and her onslaught on the tree quickened, a large patch of it now entirely bare of bark.

She was so caught up in what she was doing that she almost missed the warrior clearing his throat behind her. She did hear him, though, and she dropped to all fours and turned away from the tree. She bit back a complaint to the warrior, though she allowed herself a small growl as he walked away and led her and another apprentice into the forest. Once he was out of earshot, she turned to the she-cat she'd be hunting with. Thornpaw, she thought her name was. "You were late. Was he late to come 'n get you? I was waiting for moons." she grumbled, claws flexing as they walked through the underbrush. Her eyes and ears flicked this way and that, on high alert for prey. She hoped she'd find a raccoon, or maybe a fox or something. Sure, they were here to hunt, but predators were edible. Probably. Normal prey was fun to chase but once you caught up to it it just died, entirely boring in Blackpaw's opinion. "I hope there's raccoons." she mumbled to Thornpaw as they came to a stop in the area they'd be hunting in.

She immediately got to work, ears pricked and nose high in the air to catch any sort of scent. She crept about silently, then got something- bird! She turned her head towards the source of the scent and she could just about see a feathery tail sticking out from under some bushes. She growled softly in anticipation, dropping into a crouch. She managed to contain her excitement just enough to take about three small steps before it became too much and she sprang into the bush. Her claws met feathered flesh and she reached her head down to snap its neck. Covered in leaves and with a proud look on her face, she emerged from the bushes with the big speckled bird in her jaws. She dropped it near Thornpaw, offering an unspoken challenge.

'Hunting Dice' : 3

Thornpaw was fine with hunting. She was getting better at it as time passed ever since her first lesson with Wolfblossom. She had taken to hunting in trees more often and advantage that Wolfblossom had taught her once her hunting on the ground got better. If there was one advantage being small had it was hunting in trees. Her day was starting somewhat optimistic, until Blackpaw opened her mouth, grumbling about her being late. Her pale orange ears pressed back against her head. She wasn't late she met up with the warrior when she was supposed to.  

"I don't know who standard you are on, but we weren't late. The warrior is the one who sets the standard after all." The older apprentice informed the other. She didn't know how much her words would impact the other, but she didn't take to kindly to being told she was late when she wasn't. "I would rather we didn't run into anything.. I just want to hunt and go back to camp without a fight." She grumbled herself, fighting the eagle with her mentor that one time was enough for her.

Thornpaw sighed to herself as Blackpaw went off to hunt a bird. As quickly as the other apprentice disappeared Thornpaw settled on working for prey in the trees to improve her skill. As her feet touched a low branch of the trees around them she climbed higher and higher her small paws balancing herself well on the branches. She slowed as she scented a squirrel, coming to a crouched as she reached the creature sitting on the branch. She steadied herself before pouncing. She jumped on the branch the squirrel was on, snatching it up with ease and killing it at the same time as she steadied herself once again on the branches. With the prey in her mouth she carefully climbed back down to bury it for later.

Blackpaw huffed with annoyance at Thornpaw's response. She'd hoped Thornpaw would be interesting at least, but she was disappointed. The smaller, and older, apprentice seemed satisfied with just hunting. Blackpaw, as usual, itched for a fight. Her muscles felt underused and she was already getting bored, despite the many prey-scents she could smell in the air. They'd all be boring to catch. She watched Thornpaw as she caught a squirrel, grabbing it effortlessly from a low branch. She seemed unaffected by Blackpaw's challenge, burying the squirrel without so much as a glance at the tallet apprentice. Blackpaw growled to herself. It looked like Thornpaw was intent on making this as boring as possible for her.

It was clear that Thornpaw wasn't going to entertain her, so Blackpaw turned with another huff and looked up at a nearby tree. Watching Thornpaw climb had offered a bit of inspiration, she had to admit. Her legs and claws needed something to do. Not caring whether or not there was actually any prey up there, she hooked her claws into the tree and climbed to the second branch from the ground. It was easier than she thought! She looked up again from the branch she now sat on and spotted a squirrel. It was about three or four branches above her, easy enough to reach. Claws at the ready, she crept up the tree and, once the rodent was within paw's reach, she grabbed at the squirrel.

Her claws snagged its bushy tail and it squeaked with alarm, but it was too late. Hooking into its tail fully, Blackpaw yanked and tossed the squirrel into her waiting jaws. She snapped down on it, ignoring the blood on her face. Nobody said hunting had to be elegant. Getting down from the tree was a bit harder than getting up, but she eventually managed to have all four paws on the ground. She padded over to the bird she'd caught and dropped the squirrel down next to it, looking back over to Thornpaw once she did so. "If you don't wanna fight, you can at least climb. Let's see who can climb higher." Hopefully Thornpaw wouldn't insist on being a stick in the mud.

Thornpaw sighed internally at Blackpaw's next suggestion. They were here to hunt not to play games, this wasn't free time that they got back in camp, but at least this suggestion was better than the last. This one didn't involve as much risk in getting hurt like the other did. "Fine, but if you fall don't blame me." She told the other apprentice. On the way up she would at least hunt one more time, so they can't get too mad for slacking off.

The pale apprentice was quick to jump up into a lower branch, before she started to climb higher, trying to keep her movements even and silent to try not to disturb any prey. Shortly into her climb the pale apprentice noticed a bird, which caused her to pause. Prey is what she was here for. With reminders in her head about hunting, and a crouch, she soon pounced on the bird. With another bird caught, the apprentice stuffed it into the tree hollow near by for now, and continued to climb, stopping at some thinning branches waiting for Blackpaw to attempt her own climb.
