The journey back from Highstones had been far more easy than the journey there. Limbs rejuvenated with the new lives that she had received, Perchstar almost had to slow herself down so that the medicine cat could keep up with her on the trek. Just as it was easier to walk downhill than uphill, it was easier to return to RiverClan camp than to leave. As she stepped onto the small island where she and her Clanmates resided, the she-cat let out a quiet sigh of relief. Her ceremony was over... Now, it was time for one more ceremony to be held. Though it was now nearly mid-day, and she had until moonhigh tonight to appoint a deputy, Perchstar already knew exactly what she was going to do. The silent journey back had given her plenty of time to think, and for once, she felt confident about her decision. She wanted to do it now. The faster that RiverClan had all its necessary high ranks, the better. Unfortunately, that would mean she wouldn't have time to discuss with the cat she planned to choose beforehand. She felt sure the cat would accept... it wouldn't come out of nowhere like Jaystar's appointment had.
Bright newleaf sun shone down on the camp, where many of her Clanmates lay relaxing and sharing tongues after the difficult battle last night. It was still a little bit messy from the fighting, but it was home. The fresh-kill pile bursting with fish; the reeds covering the entrance; the mossy warriors' den that likely needed to be patched again. It was reassuring to look at. I have changed from Perchfall to Perchstar... but RiverClan remains the same. Home. There would be plenty of time to greet the others later. For now, there was a ceremony to be held. Leaping gracefully atop the Willow Branch as she had done so many times before, yet feeling as if this was truly the first time she ever had, Perchstar called: "Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting!"

Owlshriek settled near the entrance of the camp, having done guard duty while he recovered from his injuries. He had been the one to see their new leader and medicine cat return home. The warrior had greeted them both with a nod, and a quiet "Welcome home."
The warrior had only really known her as their leader, without the title. Perchstar had led when his father vanished, through the hold of the dark forest. If anything, Perchstar earned her title many lifetimes over. He continued to miss his father, though the feeling was fleeting these days. You learn to deal with disappointment.
But, Perchstar standing tall, voice calling over the clan-- Owlshriek was beginning to learn what normal meant to the older cats.

Dovesight dragged herself out of the medicine den at the sound of Perchfall's call. Her neck was sticky with a poultice, and she was extremely sore after her altercation with Whitesnake, but she was alive. She thanked the stars for that. It still felt so foreign to her, most of her life they had only existed in memory, and now here the stars were, back and brighter than ever. Did that mean Darkglow could see her now? Would her mother be proud of how her kit grew up?
She saw a shell laying near her on the sand, and she drew it close. Tinypool once said that Darkglow had liked shells, so Dovesight would keep this one close to her heart. She would give it to her mother whenever she finally got to see her. She made that silent promise to herself, before turning her attention back onto her deputy.
Ashflight, sitting by the camp entrance, was about to doze off in the warm morning sunlight when the reeds rustled, finally signaling the arrival of Perchfall and Cloverheart. The fluffy gray tom opened his green eyes and leaped to his paws, a bright smile on his face when he caught sight of his best friend, but right as he was about to greet her he hesitated. She looked so...different. Not physically, but there was a different gleam in her eyes, much like the one Ivystar had possessed. Strength, unnaturally given by the stars, which was something he would never quite get used to. Instead of approaching her, he simply smiled a bit lopsidedly and watched as she scaled the Willow Branch, calling the familiar summons in her powerful voice. Taking a seat near Owlshriek and Dovesight, two of the younger warriors, he waited to see what would come of this meeting. All he knew for certain though, was that he wanted to speak with her afterward.
On trembling legs, Grebekit stumbled from the medicine den, fur mildly crusty and kinked in random places, the endings of a fever clearly present in her body. An awful sickness had taken ahold of the little RiverClan molly around the time her siblings progressed into apprenticeship, stunting her ability to progress in any capacity as she fought to say alive. Even now, her nose was a little runny and she felt a hearty amount of nausea, but she was determined to be present for something. Her legs began to ache after a few meagre steps and she took it as an immediate cue to sit where she was, curling a scruffy black tail around her paws, waiting for the meeting to commence.

Poppyshine
Poppyshine had spent the whole night with Rushtalon and blinked blearily when she heard some noise outside. She stood and stretched, taking a brief moment to groom some of her fur that had gotten ruffled in the night. She looked to Rushtalon, feeling a warmth under her pelt as she smiled at him. She’d leave him a little longer to stir on his own while she went to see if it was Perchfall’s return.
Stepping out into the camp, she saw that it indeed Perchfall—no, Perchstar now—had returned. She wasted no time either, jumping to the Willow Branch. Poppyshine smiled with great pride at seeing her new leader gracefully take her spot. She seemed brighter than she had in had in many moons, and the sight put Poppyshine at ease. The gift of nine lives had helped her, even just a little. Poppyshine took a seat with the rest of the cats in the clearing, looking up eagerly to Perchstar for her announcement.

Greynose was still thinking on the words that had been shared with him from his mentor, his usual lethargic, but warm gaze was now distant, distracted. Of course, he wasn't completely out of it. He still had enough awareness to try and insist to Coverheart before she left that he was fine, and she didn't need to worry about him since there were clanmates with far more grievous, and stress-inducing wounds to worry about than his 'little scratch'. That argument had failed, as he had expected, so the next best thing he tried to do was let his thoughts absorb him again and try his best not to make life more difficult for the medicine cat.
He hadn't slept that night, his thoughts, his own stress keeping his mind running and unable to settle, but he was used to getting no sleep thanks to his apprentice days, so he could still function reasonably well. Eventually, though, he was snapped out of his musings by that oh-so-familiar casting call. It seemed Jaystar's 'absence' was finally being patched up. Perchfall deserved it after all she endured for the clan's 'integrity' or whatever normal clanmates called it, and he admired her for it.
She'd do... well. He wondered though if she ever came across a difficult decision as Jaystar had... would she make the right choice and follow pride right to grievous consequences, or would she follow the path that was better for the survival of the clan as a whole...?
Well, perhaps she'd never have to make that decision, he sure hoped so. He could only take seeing achingly familiar-but-dead faces once more only for them to be stolen away from him again so many times before he'd... break.
The thought made him frown grimly. Closing his eyes the tired young warrior hauled himself to his paws, teeth gritting against both types of pain. Now wasn't the time to dwell though, so, he pushed himself through the entrance of the medicine den, walking over to the gathering group of cats with his usual terrible posture and settling with them, eyes searching for the weary medicine cat. He'd rather sit with her, honestly, someone familiar who was actually alive.
In the back of his mind, he faintly wondered who the next deputy would be.
Rushtalon stirred, muttering incoherently as he shook away the tendrils of sleep. Blinking slowly, the tom found his mind slowly awakening and his gaze focused on the retreating form of Poppyshine. A dreamy and contented smile crossed the warrior's maw as he laid his chin gingerly on his forepaws. It quickly occurred to him that there was a reason she had pulled away. The clan was gathering. Their rightful leader must have returned and called together the anticipated meeting.
He slowly rose to his paws and moved closer to the den entrance with a soft grunt. Even if he was useless to the clan right now, Rushtalon was determined to be a part of things. Besides, the fuzzy contentedness of his being, a sensation of being complete... it energized him in ways he did not know were possible. As much as he longed with rest in the warm glow of Poppyshine forever, she had also renewed his determination. Some cats may have lusted after the coveted leadership position but he simply longed to care for his kin and clan. And for the she-cat who stirred his heart.
The dark-russet tom craned his intense green gaze to look up at Perchstar. Soon, another cat would stand at her side to lead the clan. Riverclan would be guided by self-assured paws once again - something he hadn't known in his life. To think of it now felt odd and foreign but also reassuring.
Watching her Clanmates gather, Perchstar simply took a moment to breathe. It had been a long journey; she had been awake all night, unless the leader ceremony counted as sleeping. By all accounts, she should be tired. No, she should be exhausted. But instead... she felt stronger, more awake, than she had ever since being appointed deputy. For a moment, she remembered what it had felt like, when Jaystar suddenly stood on this rock and declared he was leader. The confusion, the worry... and then the drop in her stomach when he said her name. It would be different this time. Her Clanmates liked her-- at least, she thought they did. Some of them seemed to, at least. No, now is not the time for insecurities. The life of strength that Ivystar had given her radiated through her body, making her a little more steady on the delicate branch. This time, it would be different. StarClan had truly chosen her. They were really back. And with the return of the stars, RiverClan would be stable once more. Perchstar would not let them fall again.
"Cats of RiverClan," she announced, her normally neutral voice having a tone of authority to it that felt far more natural now, "I have returned from the Moonstone. As we all saw last night, the stars have returned. StarClan rules the skies once more. While time can only tell what that will truly mean for the forest, one thing is for certain: I went to Highstones, and I have received my nine lives. Our warrior ancestors have named me Perchstar." She paused for a moment, feeling the truth of that statement. It would take some getting used to... the new name felt strange on her tongue. Yet, it somehow seemed right. This was right. The stars did choose me. It wasn't a mistake. It wasn't. There would be time to think later. Now was time to act.
After a moment of silence, Perchstar continued. "I will do my best to lead this Clan. Thank you all for putting your trust in me." Her eyes gazed down at her Clanmates, scanning over the many faces she knew and had grown to appreciate. Cloverheart, Owlshriek, Rushtalon, Poppyshine... Ashflight. I need to speak with him. The thought came unbidden, and she pushed it away for the moment. That, too, could wait. "As you all know, when a new leader is appointed, they must appoint a deputy. I have thought long and hard about this decision, and I know that the cat I have chosen will be the right fit for the Clan... Still, if she wishes to decline, then she may." Light blue eyes looked deeply, seriously, into the light green of her dear friend. "I say these words before all of StarClan, that they may hear and approve my choice. If she so wishes, then Poppyshine will be the new deputy of RiverClan."

Owlshriek's shoulders relaxed, and a purr escaped him. "Perchstar couldn't have chosen better. You will do amazing, Poppyshine." The tom touched a nose to her cheek and backed up enough to give her space. With an uncommon smile, he flicked his tail over his paws, waiting for her acceptance.

Poppyshine
Poppyshine watched Perchstar with wide, proud eyes as she sat up on the Willow Branch. Her heart fluttered as Perchstar looked down at them. She exuded elegance and a confidence that Poppyshine hadn’t seen within her since Poppyshine had been a kit—perhaps not even then. There was a special life that glowed in her eyes. It was a powerful life that made a shiver run down Poppyshine’s back. Her former mentor was leader now, and Poppyshine knew that she would lead RiverClan into greatness, alongside her deputy.
And her deputy was…Poppyshine?
The announcement caught Poppyshine off guard. She stared up with eyes widening a bit more, glistening with surprise. Her…a deputy? It was a thought that didn’t sound quite real. If it wasn’t for everyone’s gazes turning to her, she would have thought she simply misheard. Perchstar looked at her for an answer and her thoughts raced in front of her in a flash.
Her first thoughts were that surely there were others that would be better deputies than she. Egretstorm, Tinypool, Harebounce, all far older than she—even Ashflight, who Perchstar was so close to. It felt like her warrior ceremony was just yesterday. Did she really have the experience needed to help lead their clan? Could she lead ceremonies and reassure her clan and support Perchstar through whatever leadership positions she held? She had the heart to do it, of course. She believed in Perchstar’s ability to lead and what she wanted for the clan, and she wanted what was best for her clanmates. She would do everything in her power to make sure that RiverClan prospered. But as deputy…?
Perchstar had been the deputy. Poppyshine had seen firsthand all of the important duties she carried out for the clan when she mentored her. She saw the stress and weight that was put on Perchstar—but also the joy that came with seeing her clan blossom and endure hardship. Perchstar gave her all to the clan and she needed a cat who would do the same. When Poppyshine had become a warrior, she had remembered all of the important cats in her clan who meant so much. RiverClan was her family, and she would do absolutely everything for her family. If she could play more of a role in ensuring that RiverClan prospered, then her happiness would grow tenfold.
The silence had only been a couple of seconds as her mind caught up with her. Poppyshine blinked a couple of times and glanced at Owlshriek when he murmured to her and smiled. She felt a relaxation wash over her. Of course—if she were deputy, she wouldn’t be alone. Just as Perchstar had the entire clan backing her up as leader, Poppyshine would have her clan’s support of her as deputy. There aws nothing to fear.
Her gaze returned to Perchstar with renewed energy. “I accept, Perchstar,” Poppyshine meowed clearly, smiling up at her. They were once mentor and apprentice, and now they were leader and deputy. Poppyshine had never envisioned this for her life, but she didn’t regret it either. This would be her path for Riverclan, and she would take it happily.
Ashflight nodded approvingly as Perchstar announced her choice, the tom's kind green eyes turning to the young calico warrior as he padded over to lay a supportive tail on her shoulder. "You'll do amazing Poppyshine, congratulations. Ha, I guess that would make Perch your mentor again, huh?" The warrior's face donned a big, slightly amused smile. He'd seen for so long how great of a team the two she-cats made, even when Poppyshine was still a young apprentice. Together they would grow into an unstoppable force for RiverClan, he would bet a whole moon worth of prey on that. His eyes drifted though from the new deputy to their leader, standing so regal on the branch once occupied by another strong she-cat; his mother. She fit right in...but that thought made his stomach churn with anxiety. What if...she drifts away?
