Curious Echos (c)

The mentor. A great role that helps shape a cat in many ways. Unfortunately, the only cats that really helped shape her were... Herself. Maybe Cicadashriek and that near-death experience with a Thunderclan cat also helped shape her. Or maybe it was the almost unhealthy hatred for her mother? Either way, Marshmallow didn't really have a mentor as an apprentice. The cat she thought was her best friend as a kit disappeared from her life as soon as the tom showed up.

Now, Marshmallow had an apprentice. She had one before but she didn't pay much attention to them, that wasn't her fault. Maybe if her mentor actually taught her something for once she would've been better to her first one. Well. She could be better now. Whatever 'better' meant in her mind. She didn't really know Echopaw that well. One of Murkystar's kits, but she was blamed for hurting another one of Murkystar's kits so hopefully this one wasn't as mousebrained.

Approaching the apprentice den, it was pretty easy to spot the tom's orange fur that mingled with his black fur. Kind of how her white fur mingled with her black fur. Except... He didn't have much orange. She went over to the nest and nudged the tom up. "Training, if you've forgotten. Meet me at the entrance." She mewed, heading out the den and not checking if the tom was even following her. If he wasn't? It was only his fault. He wouldn't be getting trained that day. Less work for her to do... But then that'd mean more time laying around doing nothing... Not exactly her idea of 'fun' either.

Echopaw grumbled out as soon as he heard his mentor's familiar voice calling out to him.. Well her voice wasn't that familiar to him yet, but he knew it enough to know that she was calling for him. The tortie tom pulled himself out of the nest, making sure he stretched out well enough before following after his mentor.

He didn't understand why he had to get some strange cat as his mentor. Why couldn't he have gotten Nightstalker? Or Swiftheart? Someone in his family that he actually cared for? Stars even the deputy probably would have been a better choice. Echopaw sighed. Even his fathers were better options, if only they weren't retired. As he approached his patch pelted mentor, words escaped his mouth. "What are we doing today?" He asked flatly.

Marshmallow's tail lifted a little when she noticed the dark tom come out of the den. He didn't seem that excited. Well, she couldn't blame him. Warrior duties were very boring, and apprentice duties even more so, but at least there was something to do. "We can try hunting first. After that we'll do a little spar." She commented. "Come on." She padded into the forest, heading towards a small spot with many ferns and patches that sunk in just a little, it was very comfortable to walk on, and the prey here certainly didn't disagree.

She kept her ears perked up for noise, her mouth open, breathing in the scents of the wood. She finally heard a small croak and the slight squish of grass, the scent came soon after. Her ears flicked towards the direction and closed her mouth, looking down at her apprentice. "Alright, now use your senses to seek out prey. Sight, smell, hearing. Anything is useful. Once you finally find something, tell me and I'll show you what to do." Marshmallow offered a smile, keeping her gaze on her apprentice. I'm starting to like this, telling cats what to do...

Echopaw let out a small huff as he followed after his mentor. He didn't want to be out here especially with a cat he didn't know all to well, but oh well. He had to if he wanted to get his name. The sooner he got his name the better. At least the area they stopped in was somewhat comfortable. Though he was certain he would find something to complain about later.

The green eyed tom listened to his mentors words, using his senses like he practice in camp before. "There is a frog in that direction." He told her bluntly, nodding his head in the direction of the piece of prey he scented.

Marshmallow watched the apprentice carefully, he seemed pretty confident in what he was doing, most kits practiced a lot in camp, so she wouldn't of been surprised if he did this to get a jump-start on his apprenticeship. It wasn't long before Echopaw informed her of the frog she found, and she nodded in approval. "Great. We'll just have to be more quiet in these next steps in order not to scare the prey away." She mewed, lowering her voice to near a whisper. "Watch how I place my paws in a crouch, then you can try to catch the frog you located."

She lowered her body, her paws flat on the ground, tail straightened and still. Ears pricked forwards, and pupils widening. She focused on a blade of grass, trying to keep her body as still as possible. After a few moments of holding her position, she glanced back at Echopaw to see how he was doing. "Try doing this, then after you think you've gotten the hang of it, let me see how you do trying to catch the frog..." She muttered, keeping her gaze on the apprentice.

Echopaw crouched low, green eyes watching his mentor carefully, trying to copy exactly what she did. He was a little shaky on his feet not used to the motion, but it was fine. He could do this. When he was confident enough in his crouch he decided to attempt to hunt the frog using what little knowledge he had.

He made sure to remain as quiet as possible, crouching low sooner than he thought he would have to so he didn't startle the creature he was hunting. When he felt close enough he pounced. At first the frog was a little more slippery than he was expecting but when it slipped out he was quick to regain his footing and capturing it. He killed it this time, making sure to not make the same mistake. With the frog in his jaw he turned to his mentor, green eyes posing the unspoken question of how he did.

Echopaw attempted to catch a frog, he was succesful!
