trouble on the line [open, invasion!]

Athena’s first moon of forest life had gone toward securing a den tucked into the mountain range’s base. It was small and damp and too temporary for things like that to matter. Any sensible adventurer would wait to put down roots until they had gotten the lay of the land and its residents, and Athena prided herself on being sensible. Before she could start exploring in earnest, she had to prepare. First that meant regaining the strength winter had taken from her; then it meant sweeping the mountains she’d already crossed in search of backup shelters; then it meant deciding and re-deciding where to start. While her mind balked, her paws carried her ever further from the scraggly nest. Her days were peaceful, her belly was full, and when she stepped into one blinding-bright morning with a fresh breeze that tossed her ginger fur just the right way, she found that her excuses didn’t hold water anymore.

The stretch of territory before her now was, at a glance, a barren wasteland. Looks could be deceiving, though, and so Athena lifted her head to taste the air. Prey- and predator-scents mingled on her tongue. Beneath them hung the scents of other cats—numerous and varied, but for the most part too faint to care about. If anything, their presence lured her onward. Any place capable of feeding so many cats could surely handle one more.

She forged ahead, fluffy tail trailing high and carefree behind her in contrast to her lone ear, which shifted every which way as she walked. Not that she needed to worry. There were no rivers to cross, no tunnels to sneak into. Only scrubby little bushes. Apparently the only interesting thing about this place was the food. Athena sighed. Though the lack of visible predator dens was...nice, and she thought she could smell a plump mouse or two nearby, she would’ve killed for just one good climbing tree.
