Hunting Lessons [Swiftheart - Deerpaw]

It had been a couple days since Deerpaw was attacked by the racoon on their first hunting trip. Swiftheart still felt so bad about that, she wished her apprentice had not gotten so hurt from the racoon.

Swiftheart walked over to the fresh kill pile and picked out a vole for her apprentice. Smiling she took it over to the medicine cat den and poked her head in. Her apprentice looked much better, the medicine and rest had done her well. If anything she was probably bored being stuck in camp. She placed the food at Deerpaw's paws "Hey! I just wanted to check in on you...I thought you might be hungry" she meowed.

"If you feel better we can try and go hunting again... maybe this time we will have better luck" she gave Deerpaw a smile, she was happy her apprentice had healed so well.
"I want you to know just how proud I am of you for standing up to that racoon. That was very brave" encouraging her.

deerpaw purred at her mentor's praise. the time she spent had been extra hard for her, feeling like deerpaw was a kit again, confined to camp. "I'm sure my luck will be better this time!" Deerpaw said, jumping to her paws and running out of camp. she had missed the marsh lands and the pines, the wind that brushed past her short fur. she had always liked wind. she wandered around for a bit before spotting a large hare close to the windclan border. had it wandered over by accident? Deerpaw wasn't about to say no to fresh-kill, though.

she didn't know what she was doing, but instinct told her to run. kicking up snow with her paws, she charged at the hare. the hare tried darting away but in a minute deerpaw was on it, jaws clamping around it's neck. satisfaction spread through the she-cat's body, and she turned to Swiftheart, waiting for her mentor's feedback.



OOC: deerpaw's plot is that she might be of windclan origin since nobody knows but her parents were unable to care for her and left her at the border. Swiftheart can point out how similar deerpaw is to a windclan cat.

Swiftheart was so glad to see her apprentice was on the mend and nodded at her excitement to get back to hunting.

She followed her apprentice along the windclan border, she watched her apprentice stalking a large hare.  She sat quietly to see what would happen.  Her apprentice ran like the wind faster than any apprentice she had ever seen before.  In an instant Deerpaw had caught the rabbit thanks to her speed.

Swiftheart purred very impressed. "Excellent catch! Very well done Deerpaw! And that is a BIG hare" she praised her apprentice.

"Your speed is impressive! You looked like an expert hare hunter out there, like a windclan cat" she congratulated her proudly.  


Swiftheart's ears twitched hearing rustling in the snow nearby, she turned seeing a rodent near a small puddle of water that was not all the way frozen on the edges getting something to drink.  Thirst had driven the rodent from its safety underground.

Swiftheart dropped into the hunter crouch and crept silently forward toward it.


Right at the last second Swiftheart stepped on a brittle twig that snapped loudly alerting the prey. She leapt at it but it was too late, it had scurried away to the safety of underground nest.

She flicked her tail a little upset Well... That happens too sometimes she grinned at her apprentice.

OOC: swiftheart should have caught the rodent, thanks to the +2 bonus

Deerpaw blinked as Swiftheart pounced. the warrior could leap and pounce far better than the apprentice ever could, and deerpaw hoped that she could one day do the same. "Since we started, can we take this as a hunting patrol?" she added, before burring the hare ( after some difficulties ) and stalking through the snowy pines again. after what seemed like forever, and deerpaw's paws were ready to freeze and drop off, she smelled the distant scent of a frog. dropping into a crouch, she slowly stalked towards the frog.

remembering Swiftheart's pounce earlier, deerpaw gathered her paws and pushed off the ground. snapping her jaws on the frog's spine and feeling it go limp, deerpaw purred softly. "From the looks of the fresh kill pile, I always thought prey was hard to come by!" she exclaimed in shock. truth was, deerpaw had never seen a season other than leafbare, and constantly believed that the world was a bleak white with its many shades of brown and grey.

OOC: So we are currently using the harsh season table for rodents so that is a 1-3 (1-5 with the bonus) I asked staff to confirm this just to be sure.

Swiftheart watched Deerpaw stalk near and pounce on the frog catching it in her jaws.  Excellent catch! she congratulated, she really meant it too, her apprentice was coming along so well in her hunting training.

Swiftheart smelled a second rodent nearby, hmm maybe she could get this one?

She dropped down low to the ground stalking towards it, when in range she leaped. This time she got luckier and she hit is square on catching it between her claws with ease as it went limp. She purred smiling

We make a pretty good team! she commentated.

She buried her catch, and went back over to Deerpaw.

Your hunting has come so far! I could not be more proud of you. she praised her apprentice.

I was wondering... If you would be interested in sparring against Sootpaw at some point? I have talked with Sootpaw's mentor Nightstalker. Nightstalker is my brother. It could give you and Sootpaw extra practice. she asked Deerpaw


OOC: You already battled the racoon so this is completely optional as you already have the battle req you need. It also might be a bit before Nightstalker and Sootpaw are ready but just trying to gauge interest if you would want to do this or not, no pressure either way.

Deerpaw purred in agreement to her mentor's words. she bashfully licked her chest fur and muttered, "I'm not that good."

deerpaw nodded eagerly. perhaps a bit too eagerly. the mention of the dark grey apprentice sent shivers up her spine. "Of course!" she exclaimed. to the apprentice, it all seemed normal wanting to spar with her "friend" but the more "experienced" Swiftheart might have noticed something

Swiftheart purred, she was glad Deerpaw was excited for this. Great! I will try and get that set up with them she had actually never seen Deerpaw this excited but she shrugged thinking it was just general enthusiasm for getting more fighting practice in.

Come along lets gather up what we caught so far before our paws freeze off out here she gathers her catches
