Deerpaw Hunting Training

OOC: Please read over the Hunting System, as well as the Hunting System Tutorial. If you roll a 8,9 or 10 (or decide to summon a predator for the requirement, I can RP them until you're familiar with the systems).

The top link has charts that show your odds of catching each type of prey.  So for example Shadowclan catching a rodent is a 1-3 chance (however since we are hunting in the pine grove a passive +2 is added making it a 1-5 chance to catch.)  We are currently using the harsh season tables.

The bottom link shows how to atatch a dice roll to your post and then you can always go back after seeing the dice roll and edit your post as makes sense.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me or any staff.  

PS: Since we are in harsh season rolling an 8 , 9 or 10 will trigger a predator ambush, dont worry we will make it something easy if this happens.  In all other seasons only a 10 will do this. One final note, this topic will occur at night so if we do get ambushed you get the +1 attack bonus for being shadowclan at night.

Swiftheart excitedly walked toward the apprentice den.  The sun had just set and the moon slowly rising in the sky.  It would be a good time to take her apprentice training.  For the most part Shadowclan was active more so in the night than any other clan.

She poked her head into the apprentice den.  Deerpaw?  she called out, Are you ready to go get some training in? she asked sounding just as excited as when she was an apprentice and getting to go out for the first time.  She hoped that Deerpaw would share her excitement and enthusiasm, she was so happy to have an apprentice and wanted to make sure she could do anything possible to best help Deerpaw become the best warrior possible.

She led Deerpaw out of camp and into the Pine grove (Shadowclans best hunting grounds).  Along the way she spoke in a hushed whisper as to not alert anything of their presence.  You and I have similar pelt patterns, mostly white with few exceptions here and there.  Usually this makes it a bit harder to blend into the shadows but during this season we have a great advantage. She pointed to all the patches of snow that covered the ground.  

Getting to a relatively dry spot of land (For shadowclan anything out of a marsh or snowpatch can be considered dry)  she stopped and turned to her apprentice, So, first up the hunters crouch when you identify a piece of prey you will want to get into a stealthy position, bend your legs and keep your belly above the ground.  Your tail and shoulders should make a line keeping sleek she demonstrated the crouch showing Deerpaw as she spoke.

Give it a try once you have it down, we can see if we can score your first catch. she instructed.  She was so excited to be out here doing this.

OOC: due to excitement i have read and familiarized all hunting and battle systems and tutorials.

deerpaw nodded enthusiastically to Swifheart's instructions. she hoped she would be able to form a close bond with her mentor, as Deerpaw didn't have many opportunities in that past to meet her clanmates. carefully observing Swiftheart's position, deerpaw slowly copied her. it was easy for her, since she often bundled up or crouched to avoid cats or simply as a act of fear. she shifted most of her weight on her haunches and raised her tail a bit. "Is this ok?" she asked her mentor worriedly.

P.S. deerpaw is in a position in which she can jump up or dart away quickly, but not able to stalk properly. feel free to correct her <3 i look forward to roleplaying with you!

Swiftheart looked at the stance that Deerpaw had.  "That is a really good start but try to put more weight on your front paws, and try to also keep your tail lower so that the prey will not see you coming" she meows in a reassuring friendly tone.  "Now once you do that, take a deep breath and smell the air around for me. Tell me if you can scent any prey nearby or anything at all for that matter"

The scents of prey were luckily strong in the area which Swiftheart was thankful for so Deerpaw should be able to smell them...catching them was the final tricky step.  She kept a sharp eye out for any dangers but luckily so far had not picked any up.

deerpaw nodded and adjusted her stance. once done, she scented the air. a familiar scent drifted through the cold air. mouse? no, vole. "I smell vole," deerpaw said finally, trying to pinpoint it's position. the she-cat was somewhat surprised the vole had not ran away from the duo yet, but she wasn't about to say no to prey. the little creature was nibbling away at the root of a pine tree, trying to collect a small twig it must have left there in leaffall. deerpaw glanced at Swiftheart for permission and perhaps advice?

Swiftheart nodded quietly giving Deerpaw full permission to go for it. She stood absolutely still so as not to interfere or scare the vole off. She gave Deerpaw a reassuring smile and watched the apprentice in silence She lowered her tail signaling to Deerpaw to remember to keep a low tail when stalking the prey.

She held her breath excited to see her apprentice have her first shot at catching a piece of prey.

deerpaw silently moved her paws, edging slower towards the vole. when she was a tail-length away, she crouched and prepared to pounce. suddenly, another scent drifted towards her. the vole noticed and immediately darted away. what is this scent? deerpaw had never smelled anything quite like it, but if it had scared the vole it should scare her too."Swiftheart?" she asked right before a large black and white striped creature barged through a clump of ferns. on impulse, deerpaw raised a paw and batted it's muzzle. "What is that?!" she shrieked.

The racoon had not taken kindly to being hit in the face and lashed back out at deerpaw

Swiftheart jumped slightly when a racoon came seemingly out of nowhere.  She immediately went into full protection mode and charged forward at the racoon not wanting it to hurt her apprentice any more than it already had.  She angerly leapt at it hitting it square on  sending it flying into the ground.


Racoon used quick swipe
Swiftheart used Jumping strike against the raccoon -8 base damage -3 for first strike and -1 for night bonus

OOC sorry about that initial confusion. I think we both accidently played the badgers turn at first. It looks like it is all good now, sorry about that.

deerpaw screamed as the creature hit her. never had she felt such pain in her life. blood gushed out of the wound and she stumbled. she was tempted to run, but she couldn't leave Swiftheart to attack by herself. taking a deep breath, she charged again.

Swiftheart watched as Deerpaw delivered a final snap and the Racoon fell to the forest floor defeated.

That was not at all how I wanted to start battle training but you did great she said encouragingly.

She sighed with concern looking at Deerpaw's wound. She quickly licked at it keeping it clean from infection and working to slow the bleeding.

We better get you back to camp and in to see my sister Basilbloom the medicine cat she quickly meowed. She helped Deerpaw to her feet and let her apprentice lean on her if she needed at all and was ready to catch her if need be.

deerpaw gasped as the creature collapsed. what just happened? panting to catch her breath, she turned to Swiftheart. the apprentice felt numb as still more blood seemed to matt her white fur. she just wanted to hunt in peace, was that too much to ask? shivering, she stumbled and leaned on her mentor's side and allowed her to lead her back to camp. "W-what was that?" she asked, her eye wide with fear.

Swiftheart supported Deerpaw for the journey back to camp she knew that Basilbloom would have no problems getting Deerpaw back to full health in no time.  She led her apprentice directly to camp to get Basilbloom's help. I want you to know you were very brave there. I am very proud of you Deerpaw her voice was full of pride as she spoke to Deerpaw.
