Out for a Wander (closed)

Swansong rested comfortably in a sunny patch in the camp, her face turned to the rays of light. A gentle breeze sighed through the pines, ruffling her fur just slightly and bringing a myriad of sweet, green and growing scents with it. As she let her thoughts wander, a different scent touched her nose, and she opened her eyes to look across the clearing, spotting the tall, lanky form of her brother. Sunflower.... Something stirred, perhaps a glimmer of guilt, squeezing her heart for a brief moment as it brought to mind the memory of his shivering frame cowering next to a cold-eyed monster with a wicked smile.

She hadn't spoken much to him for a while. It was... just a bit hard to carry on a conversation with the tom when neither of them talked much. Some might say that wasn't a conversation at all.

She drew her paws up into a sitting position, hesitating for a moment as a thought flickered into her head. Perhaps... they could go on patrol - hunt. A bittersweet recollection, like the faded scent of a long-gone flower, brushed into her memory. The last time we did something like that was when Amberdawn and Leaftwirl were still here.... Getting to her paws, she padded over to him. They might not be here any longer to go with us, but perhaps we can still enjoy it.

"Sunflower? Would you like to go on a patrol?"

Having just awoken, Sunflower slunk out of the warrior's den and gave his long front legs a stretch, and then his hind legs. The weather was nice, just as it had been as of late; not too warm but not cool, and to him, it was the perfect temperature. Of course, any temperature other than Leaf-bare cold was perfect to him, seeing as though his fur was so extremely thin.

Before he was able to take anymore steps or decide what he'd do first, his sister, Swansong, approached him, asking if he'd like to go on a patrol. Seeing as though he didn't have anything else in mind, he didn't really have a choice... But then again, maybe it was for the best. Lately, the two of them had been busy with their warrior duties and hadn't really had a chance to spend time together. Of course, he wasn't exactly a talker, but he found solace in being around his family, even if not many words were spoken.

"O-okay," the tall, lengthy warrior mewed simply with a nod.

Swansong smiled, dipping her head slightly in return as she turned and led the way out of camp, the sunlight flitting through the branches above briefly glowing on her pelt as she passed through dancing patches. For a while, the only sound was the soft pad of their paws over pine needles and ringing calls of birds chirping to each other. Finally, she glanced sideways up at her brother. "It's been a while since we've hunted together, hasn't it?" She mewed softly, making sure her voice wasn't too loud. While part of the intention for the patrol was to catch up with Sunflower, the rest was to hunt, and scaring off all the prey would not help with that particular goal.

She tasted the air, keeping her ears alert to any sounds of scuffling or rustling. The faint trace of prey that had long ago moved on was all that met her tongue, beneath the familiar sharpness of the pines and earthiness of the rocks - the clear scent of almost mid-morning. Drifting through the air, a few more distant smells came to her, but nothing close by, yet. That's all right. I'm sure we'll find something soon. In the meantime, she searched for some point of conversation, her tail twitching behind her just a bit self-consciously. "The kits are doing well."

Following his sister out of camp, the two of them padded alongside each other through the lightly wooded forest. Perking his ears at her comment, Sunflower didn't speak but gave her a nod in reply. After several more moments of silence, Swansong spoke again, this time about his kits. With them being all grown up and living their own lives, he didn't get much time to spend with them, but he was glad that they were doing okay.

"T-they're doing al-alright," the abnormally large eared warrior mewed in reply as the two kept moving forward.

Swansong smiled sideways at him as he replied, letting the silence stretch out for a moment. Her ear twitched as a sound caught it, followed by a scent, and she slowed, probing the rocky ground between a couple of pines to their left with her eyes. A moment later, a flicker of movement caught her gaze, a blackbird hopping out onto an edge of rock sticking out of the carpet of pine needles.

She glanced back at Sunflower, and twitched her whiskers to let him know she was going after it. Turning back, she eyed the terrain for a moment before slipping towards the bird, dropping into a hunting crouch and making sure to keep her light fur out of sight, a slight breeze stirring both of their scents to the side. A quick pounce later, and the warm body of the bird hung in her jaws. Pausing to bury it, she turned back to Sunflower, a smile spreading over her maw as she tilted her head slightly on its side. "You know, when we were apprentices, we never did anything much in the way of competition. Why don't we see who's caught the most prey at the end?" A twinkle of kittish mischief entered her eyes, and she added, "In less of a rush than apprentices would, of course. Friendly competition, I suppose?"

Padding along, he slowed his gate and watched as she began to hunt a nearby blackbird. Staying quiet, he kept his gaze on the she-cat as she caught the piece of prey with ease. Listening as his sister spoke, her voice holding hints of playfulness to it, Sunflower wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of a hunting contest, seeing as though he wasn't the best hunter in the forest, but if it would make Swansong happy, then so be it. "O-okay," the long legged warrior mewed softly.

Making his way away from his sister, he soon spotted a robin on a low hanging branch. Crouching down, Sunflower began to stalk forward. Waiting a few moments with his haunches wiggling back and forth in calibration, he locked his gaze on the bird that sat just above him. Pouncing, the tom's big paws landed squarely onto the bird's feathery back. With a swift bite to the neck before it could let out a squawk of shock, he'd successfully caught a piece of prey. Hopefully, he'd have such luck with the next prey he hunted...

Sunflower attempted to catch a bird and was successful. -3 SP.

She smiled at his reply, mentally shaking her head slightly, but stayed quiet as he tracked down a bird. He leapt, his paws stretching out and his bite cleanly killing it, and she purred. "Good catch!"

She glanced around, keeping an ear tuned to the sounds around them, her maw parting slightly to pick up a scent. Nothing caught either, in this particular patch, and she glanced at the tall, lanky form of her brother. "Where do you think we should head to now?"
