Clarity in Hunting

Clearpaw took a moment to turn back to Clovertwist, but the warrior's observations seemed to be true; Clearpaw and Sweetpaw were both alright, much to his relief. The former padded over to him and suggested shakily that they return to camp. Clovertwist's eyes were sympathetic, understanding the uneasiness he might be feeling after such an encounter. If Clearpaw had pressed it, the warrior would've happily directed them back towards camp with the one piece of fresh-kill they'd already caught. It seemed, however, that he was still collected enough to consider the grand scheme of the situation at camp. They might've been frightened, but WindClan still needed food. Clovertwist looked to Sweetpaw as she cleared feathers from her claws and expressed support for a little more hunting. Clovertwist nodded, looking to Clearpaw and meowing, "We're out and we've got the energy, even if we did get a little ruffled. May as well make the most of it."

The patrol set off again at an easy and wary pace. Sweetpaw was first to depart this time, and as Clovertwist listened over the grasses he felt confident she'd had success. She returned with a pleased look, and Clovertwist smiled at her and nodded. His ears twitched reflexively as he heard a bird fluttering in the grasses, and he turned and crouched to locate it. He saw a spotted pale wing among the grasses and began to move forward, slipping through towards it. If not for his kinked tail, he was sure he would've made it; the tip of the crimped appendage brushed a clump in a sharp and unnatural way, and the bird was immediately alerted. With an almost insultingly unbothered series of chirps, the bird fluttered into the air. Clovertwist leaped after it to no avail, his claws swishing through empty air. He landed and snorted, watching it become a speck on the horizon before returning to the apprentices. At least they caught something, he thought, trying not to feel guilty.

Clovertwist voiced his approval of Clearpaw's suggestion and the tall apprentice found himself swelling with pride. If warriors like Clovertwist listened to him and he was just an apprentice, there was no telling what he could do as a warrior. His warrior ceremony was a long ways off, however, and he still had a lot to learn. Clearpaw nodded towards Clovertwist and turned away, off to try and do some more hunting.

He slunk off through the grass, feeling the wind through his fur and shifting scents around the moors. He paused, tasting the air for a moment, catching the scent of a hare nearby. There was a rustling beyond him, a few foxlengths away; luckily all the noise from the fight hadn't scared too much prey away. Clearpaw crept towards the unaware creature, eyes narrowing as his claws unsheathed. Once he thought he was close enough, he leapt at the hare. His aim was a tad bit off but his claws still made contact with the prey, digging into its soft flesh. The hare squealed and tried to run, but Clearpaw was already upon it, biting its neck to finish it off. He huffed as he carried the fresh-kill back to the group; he had almost missed that one, he should practice more with Crowspirit later.

The apprentice dropped the prey onto the ground next to his other buried quail, looking around for his companions. Sweetpaw, it seemed, had caught something as well, but Clovertwist had come up empty-clawed. He looked on, flicking one large ear. Surely Clovertwist would get something next time.
