We're Not Looking For Trouble...

Mintwhisker padded a small ways ahead of the apprentice, humming through a jawful of herbs. Despite the flood, there were many plants that had sprung up lately, and she was in desperate need of some marigold. Her herbs stores had been completely washed away by the flood, so she and Amberdawn had to start from scratch. The thought of her precious herbs completely ruined still made Mintwhisker wince. Moons of work, ruined in an instant... but nevermind that. It was Newleaf, which meant that soon enough her herb stores would be completely replenished. Besides, it had just stopped raining for the first time in days.
The tabby she-cat turned to look at her companion with a purr. "We're nearly to the border, Sagepaw." She said. "Once we get back to camp, I'll make sure to tell Mistyrain how helpful you were." She vividly remembered following Oceanlight through the snow as a warrior apprentice, exploring the forest and hoping that she'd talk Rippedsky or Dandeliondapple into letting her have the rest of the day off. She missed those days, back when the only thing she worried about was whether or not she'd have to clean out the elder's den.

They approached the Fallen Oak and Mintwhisker began to inspect all around the tree, searching for any herbs or mushrooms that could be growing near it.

Sagepaw trotted diligently next to Mintwhisker, keeping his eyes and ears and primarily his nose open for herbs and anything else she needed. He didn't mind doing busywork for other cats, it just got him one step closer to earning his warrior name. Besides, he liked Mintwhisker, he thought she was entertaining. With a flick of his tail, he followed the medicine cat's lead and began a slow circle around the tree, sniffing for anything different that could be an herb or mushroom. His eyesight wasn't good up close so he had to rely on his sense of smell to hopefully find what he was looking for.

"Thanks for putting a good word in for me, Mintwhisker! I've been an apprentice for soooo long...Not that it's bad, it's just, I'd like to move on with my life, you know? Maybe this will make my warrior ceremony come faster. What kind of herbs did you need again? Marigold? And mushrooms too, right? How do you keep up with all these different plants? It seems hard to me." As he rattled on, he wasn't paying attention to where he was and accidentally strayed into ThunderClan territory.

Galepaw hadn’t meant to disobey Emberheart’s instructions, but he was an impatient cat, and the few denmates he knew well enough to ask were too busy to come with him. The Fallen Oak seemed the least dangerous of the places Emberheart had shown him. Plus, it wasn’t as far from camp as his other option, the river. He’d expected it to be boring, and it was—until something pierced through the scent of ThunderClan and old tree. SkyClan, he thought, immediately sinking down, but new. As if to confirm his assumption, two voices floated toward him; the cats themselves, both significantly older than he was, appeared shortly after. Galepaw watched quietly as the talkative one kept walking around the Fallen Oak…right over the border.

He hadn’t planned on a battle, yet one had fallen right into his paws—his second test. By this point, it was more like his third or fourth, and it was nothing like his far-far-in-the-future hunting assessment, but the nervous excitement sparking in his chest couldn’t tell the difference. Besides, if he drove these intruders off their territory, Emberheart might forgive him for breaking her rules. They hadn't noticed him yet, or so he hoped. Galepaw took a calming breath, then leaped out into the open. ”Sorry to interrupt, but did you realize you’re trespassing?” Without giving Sagepaw a chance to answer, the gray tabby surged forward and struck at Sagepaw’s face.

"It takes lots and lots of pract-" Mintwhisker's words were cut short by a loud voice coming from behind them. Before the taupe she-cat knew what was happening, a gray tabby burst out of the undergrowth and attacked Sagepaw, swiping savagely at his face. Mintwhisker's murky eyes widened in shock. She had never been attacked while looking for herbs, and she hadn't practiced her battle moves in ages. She didn't want to get in the way...

Her large ears twitched. This Thunderclanner was much younger and smaller than Sagepaw was, and although he was definitely bold, he didn't seem to have much of a plan. Additionally, Sagepaw was nearly a warrior, while the stranger looked like he had been apprenticed only a moon ago. Perhaps Sagepaw wouldn't even need her help.

(OOC: Sagepaw is disabled, so his stats would be 15 HP and 50 SP to start out with :0 )

Before he could get a word in, there was suddenly another cat in front of him. "Sorry to interrupt, but did you realize you're trespassing?" He couldn't see the ThunderClan cat very well but he did see a flash of movement and then a sharp pain on his cheek. He stumbled back in surprise, feeling the hot sticky blood pour out of the wound on his face. Was he actually trespassing, or was this apprentice just trying to go after Mintwhisker and wanted to dispose of him first? Finally his training would come in handy, although he had never had to actually fight another cat before.

"Sorry, but I have to protect Mintwhisker!" he yowled, springing with powerful back legs onto Galepaw and sinking his claws into his back, bowling him over.

Though his intent had been to draw blood, the sight of it startled him a bit. More startling was Sagepaw’s reaction. Galepaw had expected him to run back across the border where he belonged; instead, Sagepaw made an odd motion that he didn’t quite recognize—and sprang. As he was knocked to the ground, Galepaw let out a shocked cry that turned into a yelp at the sensation of claws digging into his skin, followed by something warm and wet. The thought that maybe he should have had a plan brushed the edge of his consciousness, and was just as quickly dismissed.

Spitting dirt, the gray tabby hissed, ”And I have to protect ThunderClan! Get off!” But there was nothing he could do. The other apprentice was not only older than him, but bigger, too. He might as well have picked a fight with a warrior for how little difference his struggling made.

Mintwhisker's confidence in Sagepaw grew. Although the Thunderclanner's attack had been fast, it was clear that he wasn't as skilled as Sagepaw was. Still, the taupe medicine cat had to admit that watching that battle was worrisome. She didn't want either of them to end up with scars, and the Thunderclan apprentice was quite young. She hoped that Sagepaw knew enough to only fight until the Thunderclanner gave up, and no further. "Careful!" She cried, speaking to both apprentices.

The two apprentices wrestled on the ground and Sagepaw tried his best to keep his grip on the younger apprentice. He had a weight advantage, keeping Galepaw pinned to the ground. He lashed his tail angrily. "No! My job is to protect Mintwhisker, I won't let you hurt her! And you can't steal our herbs either! ThunderClan is fine, we're not doing anything except gathering plants, mousebrain!" He let his claws sink a little further into the apprentice's skin before he was knocked off balance and fell off. He quickly sprang back up to his feet, hissing.

”Yeah, gathering plants on our territory!” This was not entirely true—the other cat, apparently Mintwhisker, still had all four paws on her side of the border—but Galepaw wasn’t going to sweat the details while an enemy apprentice was squashing him into the dirt. Why they were fighting didn't matter. The important thing was that he had to win. As Sagepaw’s claws buried themselves deeper, Galepaw thrashed with renewed strength. "I said get off!" Finally, he managed to dislodge Sagepaw. The moment he was freed, he scrambled back, yowling all the while. That wouldn't happen again, not if he had any say in it; he'd have to be more careful. Though he'd never fought before, he could tell pain and exhaustion were beginning to catch up to him. Still, the determination in his dark eyes was undiminished as he glared at the SkyClan apprentice.

Sagepaw didn't bother replying verbally, instead launching himself at his opponent again with hackles raised. He wouldn't let a scrawny ThuunderClan apprentice embarrass him in front of his medicine cat. He flew at Galepaw with an angry yowl, leaping with strong back legs to barrel into him again. The impact sent them both tumbling and rolling through the dirt once more.

The time for talking had passed; Galepaw was feeling distinctly lightheaded now, sore and bleeding from the lines in his back. Before this point, the gray tabby hadn’t truly considered he might lose. Sagepaw might have been older and bigger and far more experienced, but he had to be tired too. There was still a chance. Galepaw braced himself for another pounce—but he had misread, and soon he was back on the ground, Sagepaw tumbling along with him. Snarling, he lashed out with his claws at any part of the SkyClanner within reach.
