To the Rhythm of the Wild (CLOSED)

The dilute calico she-cat entered the apprentice's den right after the first rays of sunlight illuminated the camp. With leafbare approaching, there was no time to lose. Her new apprentice needed to know the basics skills of a warrior or she might never survive out there in the wild alone, not with future snowstorms approaching. Hailsong made her way to the nest where a smaller, light-brown tabby she-cat was resting. She greeted her with a nudge of her head and dropped a mouse she caught the day before in front of her. "Morning, Eaglepaw. Today, I'll start your training and the first of today is a reminder of the Warrior Code. As an apprentice, you will have to eat after the queens, kits and elders. However, since you're a new apprentice, you may eat your fresh-kill now before we leave for a hunt." She purred before she turned her steps back to the entrance of the den. "Meet me at the exit of the camp when you're ready. We'll have a little trip." And with those last words, she left the home of the apprentices.

The experienced warrior walked through the camp greeting those cats she knew the best, which were just a few. Life was slowly starting to wake up in the camp and soon, prey would do the same. If they wanted to take real advantage of this day, she and Eaglepaw should start their training soon.

Eaglepaw groaned as she felt her head being nudged awake, her eyes groggily blinking in a rapid motion in an attempt to securely open. Her dark brown ears flicked up to listen to the approaching figure and realized it was Hailsong and this was her first day of training. Scurrying to get up, Eaglepaw first coated her pelt in brisk licks in purpose to flatten any stray hairs before gulping down mouthful by mouthful of her given prey before padding over to join Hailsong. Her routine took her surprisingly little time, the she-cat noticed, and silently smirked to herself in pride. 


"Good morning!" Eaglepaw mewed, dipping her head upon approaching the warrior.

Hailsong smiled when her apprentice arrived and replied to her with a friendly nod. Maybe it wasn't so bad to have another apprentice... "Follow me. Today, I'll show Riverclan's territory." The small warrior left the camp and crossed the small river that surrounded their home swiftly. She looked back to check that Eaglepaw didn't have too much trouble doing that small swimming and once she was by her side, the warrior proceeded to walk.

The cloudy weather didn't stop the sun from showing up and its light illuminated the reeds, streams and oranges leaves of the beech trees. A fresh breeze was in the air but not cold enough to make Hailsong feel cold or to make her shiver. It was a good day considering the season they were in and it was perfect for the first day of training. "Well, Eaglepaw, what's your first impression of Riverclan's territory?" She mewed, as she slowly walked to their first destination: the Sunningrocks. It was still a few minutes away from walking so she thought that maybe a little chat before arriving would warm the relationship between her and Eaglepaw.

Matching her pace, Eaglepaw followed behind Hailsong out of the camp and into RiverClan territory. The small swimming necessary to escape the confinements of the camp was something Eaglepaw had no trouble with, remembering her mother taking her to the Broken Pools to learn how to swim. She quite liked it, swimming- it made her pelt look sleek and nice. 

While they were walking, Eaglepaw gazed and took in the sights of RiverClan's territory. It was at this moment she realized what impossibly high expectations she had before and how beautiful RiverClan's camp really was. Slowing down her pace with her mentor's, her attention drew to the calico as she spoke. Taking in a breath, she replied, "It's amazing. The camp is more elegant, but the territory has a natural beauty to it, especially in this light."

The she-cat smiled a little by her reply. "I'm glad you like it. As you might see, the land of our ancestors is filled with streams, beech trees and prey. The ground is usually wet yet, not as muddy as Shadowclan's marshes and we have trees like Skyclan and Thunderclan to practice climbing skills. However, as you might know, what really characterizes our clan is the river and how many benefits we have been taking from it." The she-cat mewed as she crossed a large group of reeds. On the other side of the natural wall, the river could be found, as large as always and with some leaves floating calmly through its current. Hailsong walked to the Sunningrocks and sat down there, inviting Eaglepaw to join her with a movement of her slender tail.

"The life of the clan couldn't be possible without the river. It's our life source, our strength over other clans. Fish can be found here every moon and thanks we have mastered the ability to swim, we can surprise enemy clans who can't. Our ancestors have granted us that privilege and now, Riverclan is standing up as the larger clan in the forest." The she-cat then waved her tail, pointing the warm rocks were they were standing. "Actually, this was a battlefield. Moons ago, before I was even born and before Jaystar was the leader, Thunderclan attacked Riverclan, wanting to take the Sunningrocks for themselves. But Ivystar, the former leader and Jaystar's mother, led our clan into battle and thanks to the advantage we have thanks to the river, we won that day and now the Sunningrocks is both a place for hunting and for relaxing."

The warrior smiled and then jumped off the rock, landing on the line between the shore and the water. "But enough of talking. If you want to be a warrior like the ones who fought that battle and won, you have to learn how to fish, hunt, swim and fight. Let's start with fishing. First of all, you have to enter the shallow parts that are next to where fishes swim. If you have good sight, you can find a nice spot for fishing over a rock. Like this one." Hailsong walked deeper into the river and climbed a large, plain rock that was above the surface of the water. The small warrior crouched, her green eyes fixed on the water where swift shadows sometimes passed by. She waited patiently, barely moving her body until the opportunity appeared. In a second, her claws hit the water and a fish flew over her head. The she-cat didn't lose a second and when the slippery animal fell next to her over the rock, she dug her fangs on it until it stopped shaking. Hailsong returned to the shore and buried the fresh-kill, so she could come back for it later. "Now, you try it." She purred, looking back at Eaglepaw.

Eaglepaw was satisfied with Hailsong's minor reaction to her answer, smiling to herself silently. Her dark brown ears perked to listen to her descriptions of the Clan, listening intently but hiding her disinterest. Her sleek fur brushed against the tall clumps of reeds as the two she-cats crossed to Sunningrocks, and Eaglepaw joined Hailsong's beckoning and sat with the calico warrior on the rock.

Her ears faced and twitched towards Hailsong, but Eaglepaw's gaze was unresting as it flicked between her mentor and her surroundings. Her interest only peaked when Hailsong mentioned how Sunningrocks was a battlefield, and her eyes finally fixed on the opposing she-cat to listen more attentively, nodding at her words.

The tabby's paws followed the calico off the rock and at the shore. She watched her precision while hunting the fish, and knew she would have to replicate it for herself. Eaglepaw's expression did not change as she was asked to attempt it, only hesitating slightly before moving into the river. She attempted to climb the same rock Hailsong had used, quickly realizing that she would have to use a different one due to the slipperiness her mentor had left from the water on her body and the fish, settling for a similar rock nearby. She crouched lowly, peering over the surface of the water. She waited for the right chance to strike, and when it did come, her paw lashed at the water, bringing up a fish that did not flop very high, barely managing to stay on the rock. She flashed a quick glance at Hailsong before bending down and sinking her teeth in the fish. She held the fish in her jaws and looked proudly at her mentor before coming to join her.

'Hunting Dice' : 7

The warrior purred gladly by the quick success of her apprentice. She got some innate talent for fishing and with more improvement, she would be a great Riverclan hunter. The small warrior dug a hole for the fresh-kill and beckoned Eaglepaw to put it there. "That was a good first catch. Maybe another day we will go on a hunting patrol and I'll teach more fishing techniques, like catching the fish with only your jaws and swiftness."

Once the apprentice was over burying her just caught prey, the warrior looked to the other side of the river once more, making sure there was none sneaky ThunderClanner trying to trespass the border. "Remember this, Eaglepaw. It's our duty and what the Code demands to fight any trespasser. Don't be afraid and fight with honour and pride." She mewed calmly and sure of her words. Hailsong was never a fighter yet she was a cat who wanted to fulfil her responsibilities. If the rules wanted her to fight intruders, she would have no hesitation. Riverclan was more important for her than the other clans. "But for that, you will have to learn some battle moves and I know the perfect training place. Come with me." The dilute she-cat then started walking away, this time, getting away from the clear water of the river.

After getting deeper into Riverclan's lands. Streams were more scarce and taller trees could be found until they finally arrived at a large clearing surrounded by Beech trees. "This is the Beech Copse, a common place for battle and climbing training. We're not going to use our claws today but be sure to not be afraid to hit me." The she-cat put herself into a battle crouch, her hind legs a little more stretched than her front ones. She held her tail down as she kept her green eyes fixed on the apprentice. "Now, try to do this pose and once you find your balance, hit me with your paw as fast as you can."

A warm purr escaped Eaglepaw's throat upon her mentor's praise. As she buried the fish in the selected hole, she seemed to feel even more accomplished if it weren't already possible, and pride glowed throughout her body.

The apprentice looked up curiously at the experienced warrior that started to speak about fighting with honor and only nodded fiercely in response, eyes slightly furrowed. Eaglepaw's determined expression stayed, maybe even grew when she was told that they were going to do battle training. She took one last look at the river before turning and following behind Hailsong.

Until now, Eaglepaw had never been aware of the fact of how much territory could change within one spot. She didn't mind it, no- she was just surprised. Other than that, the RiverClan apprentice was grateful they were not going to use their claws- to be honest, she was afraid of it. Still, the apprentice got into a crouch. The attempt was quite poor, for the apprentice seemed to ignore Hailsong's telling to find her balance, only looking for a crouch that seemed graceful, and was barely managing to keep her balance. In all, it was very flawed. Still, the apprentice lashed out with her paw. It wasn't a violent gesture, but instead a slow one with just as many flaws as the crouch.

The she-cat received the blow with least of damage she could since she soon changed her battle crouch into a defensive one. Hailsong's lashed her tail and stood up straight this time. "Okay, you have the strength but your technique is still imperfect. I could have easily avoided that and even more, I would have been able to know you with a counterattack, like this..." The small warrior moved to one side and then leapt to the she-cat, pushing her with her front paws to the ground. Then she placed herself into a defensive crouch, showing her apprentice how she should behalf in front of a possible attack. "Battle is more than just a few hits and speed. You have been smarter than your enemy, surprise him and use your head. If your rival is bigger than you, then use that for your favour. Cats with wider bodies have more access to weak points if you know how to look at them." Hailsong, speaking in a serious yet not strict manner.

"Now, let's try something different. Try to get out of this move by any chances possible." Without another warning word, Hailsong stretched her whole once more and jumped over the she-cat. At first, they rolled over the clean ground with no rocks, reeds or puddles to be bothered about and finally, she managed to reach her scruff and grab it, catching the she-cat into a grip which she could hardly escape.

Hailsong used Scruff Shake, dealing 7 damage and costing 25 stamina. Eaglepaw is stunned for one turn.

Eaglepaw forced herself to hold back a hiss of frustration as all her flaws proceeded to be pointed out by the opposing she-cat. Hiding her annoyance, she only blinked and nodded and her expression receded to a neutral one, showing she had understood and listened to Hailsong's lecturing.

Her pure-black pupils widened in alert as her mentor proceeded to knock her down and tumble, eventually finding herself held by the scruff. Not fighting back, she stopped any struggling she was committing and went limp under Hailsong's jaws. As soon as she felt Hailsong's grip loosen, she flailed and attempted to escape, only to be met with Hailsong's jaws once more.

The she-cat let go of her scruff as soon as she realized she couldn't escape from her grip. She wasn't mad or disappointed of her. After all, this was just her first training lesson and not all cats had the innate ability to fight, like Torrentstorm, for example.  "Okay, that was interesting, however, you will have to work in your muscles and start making yourself stronger. We will have more fighting lessons in the future but is good that you now know what a battle is like." Hailsong mewed before licking her paws. The ground was muddier than usual and she hated getting her paws too dirty.

She lashed her tail and looked up at the sky. Soon, it would start getting dark but they still got time to do one last visit. "Okay, Eaglepaw, is time for the last place you should know here in Riverclan. But be alert. It's not a peaceful place most of the time." The dilute she-cat looked into the horizon with narrowed eyes, remembering the battles she had faced in that place and all the conflict it had caused.
