There's a First Time for Everything [Closed]

Violetfall stuck her nose into the Apprentice den. "Palepaw?" she asked quietly. "It's time to get up. We're starting training today." She padded in silence to the camp entrance to wait for her new apprentice.

An early bird, Palepaw was already up, meticulously grooming his short, tabby fur. Smiling gently, he followed his mentor, tail curling up in excitement. Containing his excitement as he padded up to meet Violetfall, he let his tail drop, smiling.

"I'm ready to head out." he dipped his head respectfully, casting a longing glance towards the exit of the camp. He couldn't wait to begin.

"Alright. We're going to hunt a bit near the SkyClan border, I think," she instructed. She led him out of camp and trotted briskly through the territory, glancing back every once in a while to make sure he was still following. Once they reached a small clearing, she stopped. "This looks good. Go ahead and start," she nodded to the tabby apprentice.

Out in the open, he tipped his head back, the cool morning breeze blowing through his whiskers. Palepaw padded besides his mentor, observing her as they walked. All of the knowledge she'd share with him awaited after this day. Half-daydreaming, the tomcat jolted when Violetfall urged him to begin. Dropping down on his haunches swiftly, the young apprentice tasted the air for the warm scent of prey. Soon he caught the whiff of a squirrel, nearby, so, moving quietly, his paws ever so slightly brushing the ground from lack of training. The tip of his tail twitching in mid-air soundlessly, Palepaw sighted his prey, a scrawny squirrel, searching hungrily at the roots of a tree and, tensing his hindquarters, sprung forwards, claws outstretched. For a couple of moments he felt as if he hadn't caught the red fur-bundle, but quickly he felt his claws sink into the small body and, landing on the small body with his entire weight. Dipping his head, the apprentice picked up his kill, lifting it up for Violetfall to see.

"I did it!" the silver tabby mewed cheerfully, eyes shining.

"On your first try! I'm so proud of you!" Violetfall grinned at her apprentice. "Next time, just be a tiny bit quieter," she instructed. "Go ahead and try again." Violetfall moved a short distance away to catch her own prey. She spotted a small mouse scuffling in the snow. She stalked it carefully, keeping her tail above the ground and her pawsteps quiet. When she was close enough, she pushed off the ground and landed hard, missing the mouse by a whisker. "It happens to the best of us," she whispered to Palepaw cheerfully. "Your turn!"

Nodding, the silver tabby dug up a small patch of dirt and buried his kill carefully, then followed his mentor, padding carefully as he watched her hunt. Even if she missed, Palepaw noted her stance and her quiet pace. Strongly aware of his own breath, he ducked down again, moving in silent strides, his pale body standing out against the bushes nevertheless. Spotting a thrush pecking at a pile of leaves, the apprentice tensed his haunches and pounced on the bird, biting one of its wings violently and letting the lifeless body hang from his jaws.

"Hey, this is easy! the tomcat smiled at his mentor.

Violetfall smiled widely. "You'll make a great hunter for the Clan. I think it comes naturally to you," she mewed. "Try catching one more piece of prey and then we'll head back to camp." The grey warrior sniffed the air, quickly picking up the scent of a rabbit. She followed it until she could see her scrawny prey, ears perked and listening for any sound. Keeping her pawsteps light but deliberate, she stalked it silently until she was close enough to pounce. She landed on the rabbit, struggling with it for a moment before she killed it with a swift bite to the neck.

Finally, watching his mentor kill her own prey, the apprentice returned to his own hunt. Sniffing the air and catching the whiff of a small lizard, slipping between the lush leaves, hidden in plain sight. Palepaw pounced on it, fixing his claws and pinning it down with ease. Lifting his last kill, the apprentice, tail weaving in the air with pride, returned to Violetfall, showing her his last catch. "All done. I think we can return now." he mewed, moving to dig up his other catches.
