Lilacpaw's Assessment [Closed]

Smokestripe sat near the entrance of the camp, his tail wrapped around his paws as he waited for Lilacpaw. There was a bit of guilt in his stomach ever since that failed hunting patrol with Flamestrike's injury, wishing he could have been more help but also feeling terrible for poor Willowpaw and Lilacpaw that were forced to witness such a terrible wound while being so young. So he had been doing his best to make it up for them by spending time with them...And for Lilacpaw, completing her training. It was pleasant to be in charge of an assessment again, there was something relaxing about seeing the young cats of ShadowClan hunt and show their worth and he had faith in her even if he hadn't seen her hunting first paw. But now he waited, wasting the time by staring at the stars that dotted the beautiful night sky.

Lilacpaw padded out to the entrance of camp, making her way to Smokestripe. She nodded to the warrior, waiting for her instructions. She had waited for several moons for this chance, and she wouldn't waste it.

Smokestripe blinked as his attention shifted down to Lilacpaw as she came out, getting to his paws as he dipped his head in return to her. He glanced over his shoulder toward the entrance debating on if he should lead her out into the territory before giving the rules or...No. It was early, there was nobody else around and it would be smart to let Lilacpaw find the prey on her lonesome instead of him leading her to a spot. So he turned his focus back onto her as he cleared his throat. "Your assessment is simple, catch three pieces of prey of your choice before sunrise," he explained. "Throughout your assessment, I'll be watching to judge your assessment although you may not always see me." He paused for a moment, to let the rules - however simple - to sink in before he gave a nod of his head as he stepped to the side to allow her to leave the camp. "You may begin."

Lilacpaw, upon receiving her instructions, slowly made her way deeper into the territory. Before too long, she caught an all-too-familiar scent - one that had, in past, eluded her. A rabbit. Maybe, if she got lucky, she could catch one this time. She crouched, slowly making her way closer, and pounced... However, she had misjudged her jump by a long shot, and the rabbit raced away. She sighed, making her way somewhere she hadn't yet scared off all the prey.

Lilacpaw, in her annoyance, nearly missed a toad going about its life. Thankfully, she just caught a glimpse of it, and saw a chance to redeem herself. Crouching, and trying to judge her jump more accurately than she had previously, she pounced for it. She just barely managed to catch it and deliver a swift bite to kill it, sighing contentedly as she buried it not far from where she had caught it. Her mission was only just beginning, after all.

Not too far from the newly-caught toad, Lilacpaw managed to catch the scent of lizard. She made her way towards the scent, and prepared to pounce on it - a lizard would be a fine addition to her currently pathetic collection of a single toad, after all. Luck, it appeared, was on her side, as she had judged well this time and yet another swift bite and quick lizard burial followed.

Needing only one more piece of prey to complete her assessment, Lilacpaw began searching. She could almost feel the time running out before the sun would rise, but spotted another rabbit. She felt herself tense. Would she dare go for it again, after her earlier failure? ...She couldn't keep herself from trying to catch a piece of prey that would help her Clan, so she crouched and prepared to pounce, attempting to rectify her earlier mistakes, and to her amazement, she succeeded. A swift bite and she made her way back to where she had buried the lizard and toad with the rabbit in tow, quite proud of herself.

Smokestripe watched as Lilacpaw brushed past him, remaining where he was for a few heartbeats before he turned and followed her out of the camp. His eyes flickered as he moved into the shadows, carefully following her scent-trail whie remaining in the shadows of the swamp. It didn't take long for him to catch up to her, seeing her crouched as she stalked up toward a rabbit. His ears twitched in suprise to see the rabbit - figuring it must have wandered from the moor to end up here. When the apprentice made her leap and missed, he harmly blamed her for missing as the rabbit disappeared into the night - it just wasn't one of the prey that ShadowClan was trained to hunt. On careful paws, he followed after her as she turned to find more prey. He had faith in her, certain she would catch her other three pieces with ease. He was proved correct as he watched her easily catch a toad, followed by a lizard.

But when she stumbled across another rabbit - maybe even the same rabbit - he found his heart sink as he watched with a careful gaze. He pondered if she would risk going for it and blinked in pleasant surprised when she decided to do so...And came out on top. He turned as he realized where she was heading, quickly cutting through the territory to where she had buried the toad and lizard. He reached there first, already in the middle of digging them up when the apprentice walked into view. "Congrats Lilacpaw. You've completed your assessment and I am very proud of how well you did," he purred as he turned to look at her with glimmering eyes. He paused as he leaned down, picking up the lizard and toad with ease before he jerked his head in a simple motion for her to follow as he turned and lead her back to ShadowClan with her catches.
