Smokepaw's Assessment [[Closed]]

Littlebrook stood up from her spot where she was relaxing and padded over towards her apprentice, Smokepaw. He had trained long and hard these past several moons and she had decided he was ready for his assessment. "Come with me. We're going to be doing your assessment today." She meowed, her blue eyes bright with happiness for the young tom. She had always thought of each of her apprentices as one of her own kits, and she was always filled with happiness and pride when she realized how far they'd come and grown. After Smokepaw got to his paws, she turned around and padded out into their territory.

Smokepaw had been laying near the fresh kill pile, his belly rumbling faintly but knew it was not his place to eat until the elders and kits had eaten first - and it was a very important part of the code when sickness was as lethal as it was in this colder weather. He pawed at the snowy ground only to blink in surprise as Littlebrook came strolling up, smiling warmly at him as she revealed that today was the day of his assessment. He was on his paws in an instance, happily following her with a flicker of his tail. This was it! Once this was done, he could expect to become a warrior any day now! While he knew he would miss his friends in the apprentice den, he could only hope they would join him soon. He wanted to ask so many questions about where the assessment was going to take place, what he was going to hunt but he kept his questions to himself as he followed Littlebrook into the territory, knowing his questions would be answered soon enough.

Littlebrook smiled at the tom's excitement and stopped in a small clearing. "Alright. I want you to catch me three pieces of prey before sun-rise." She continued, glancing up at the moonlit sky before looking back at Smokepaw. "I'll be watching the whole time, but you wont see me. We'll meet back here when you're done." She meowed easily. "You'll do great." She told him softly before turning to disappear into the brush.

Smokepaw came to a stop shortly after his mentor, watching her with careful eyes as she gave him his mission - to catch three pieces of prey. "Yes Littlebrook." He nodded quickly before watching the she-cat disappear into the bushes, swallow as he turned to glance around the clearing. The idea that she would be watching was a bit terrifying - she would see every catch...And every miss. He shook his head, knowing that he couldn't let his terror of disappointing her get the better of him as he headed in the opposite direction then Littlebrook had done - his mouth open as he checked the air for the scent of prey.

It took a while but finally he caught the scent of a frog. His eyes quickly narrowed as he dropped into a couch, moving slowly across the ground as he attempted to locate the source of the smell. Drawing nearer and nearer, he spotted the green skin of the frog sticking out against the white background of the snow. It moved slowly, the snow seeming to keep it from moving all that well. He smiled softly, drawing himself closer with small, slow steps but in his excitement of finding prey he put a little to much weight on his front paw causing the snow to make an small crunch noise beneath him. It was all the frog needed to be made aware of the apprentice's presence. The frog shifted in the snow, quickly gaining its footing as it leaped away. Smokepaw as forced to watch in disappointment as it raced off, knowing that he had no chance to catch it unless he wanted to alert the whole forest as the snow would simply make to much noise. He sighed softly before he turned, tasting the air once more.

Littlebrook watched her apprentice from the cover of the darkness and the brush. She nodded unconsciously as he stalked a frog, but winced inwardly as he stepped too heavily on the snow. She shook her head slightly. Don't let your excitement or nerves get in the way, Smokepaw. You've got this. Just concentrate on the prey. She thought silently.

It took a while before a new scent of prey hit him - this time belonging to a lizard. His tail twitched as he swerved his head left and right, pinpointing where the lizard was before he started to stalk forward. This time he made special effort to keep his paw steps light and soundless, not wanting to repeat what had happened moments before. The sleek body of the lizard stood out among the snow, moving slowly as the cold weather sucked all of its energy away. It was an easy catch. Slowly he pulled himself forward, his yellow eyes glimmering as he got into leaping range. Taking Littlebrook's lessons to heart, he bunched up his muscles before kicking off - making little noise as he came barreling down on the lizard. It had no time to escape even if it had taken notice of him. Smokepaw purred happily as he picked up the limp lizard in his jaws, hiding it somewhere safe to return for once his assessment was complete. One down, two to go.

Littlebrook watched proudly as he stalked and caught his next prey, a lizard, pretty much perfectly. She quietly crept through the snowy forest as she followed Smokepaw to his next prey. He still had a while before sun-rise and she wasn't worried in the least bit.

Deeper into the territory he went, his ears perked for the slightest noise that would hint to prey as he tasted the air with every step. Finally, the scent of a toad reached him. Running through the same motions, he dropped into the couch and stalked slowly toward it. It didn't take long to see the toad but before he could even get a chance to attempt to catch it, simple bad luck caused the prey to spot him. It let out croak of fear as it hopped away leaving Smokepaw crouching there with whiskers twitching in annoyance. There was nothing he could of done and turned with a slight sigh, knowing he would have to go searching for another.

Littlebrook watched intently as he began stalking a toad. He almost got it, but it turned towards him, giving him away. It was bad luck and it didn't have anything to do with Smokepaw's skills as a hunter.

Despite missing two of the three prey he had stalked so far, Smokepaw tried his best to keep in high spirits. He couldn't forget that Littlebrook was watching and he wanted to look his best for this assessment. So, he kept his head high as he moved forward on silent paws, ready to catch the next prey that crossed his path. Finally, he caught the taste of frog in the chilly air. Locating it quickly, he found the amphibian sitting in the snow. He wasn't going to mess this one up like he did the first one. He moved forward slowly, his eyes focused on the frog as he kept downwind of it and made no sound. Once he was close enough, he leaped and with a quick blow, killed it. He stared at the limp frog with a grin, quickly burying it so that he could return for it later. One more catch and this assessment would be over.

Littlebrook continued to follow the young tom through his mission she had assigned him. He had just caught the scent of a nearby frog and he creeping towards just as she had taught him. A small smile crept on her face as he caught it with perfect precision. Just one more to go and we'll have a new warrior in the warrior's den.
