Bluepaw's Border Patrol

"Bluepaw, wake up! It's time to train!" Thrushstar meowed into the apprentice's den. This was going to be quite a long morning, so they better get started.

Bluepaw woke up hearing Thrushstar's voice telling her to get up. Eager to start her first day of training, she willingly stood up and padded outside. "I'm ready to begin. What are we going to do today?" she asked.

As the apprentice got up, the leader padded out of the den. "We're going on a border patrol. You need to know what our territory looks like before we can hunt or train for battle," he responded. It was a very important process. There were so many little things that needed to be learned before she could become a warrior.

Bluepaw was slightly disappointed that she was only going to get to see the territory for the day, as she was hoping to go hunting or learn some battle moves, but she quickly got over it. She realized that seeing the territory was a big part in her training, no matter how little it may seem. After all, once she was more of an experienced apprentice, she would want to go out hunting on her own without her mentor, and that would be an example of something she wouldn't be able to do without knowing her surroundings. Besides, this would give her an opportunity to see what was outside of the camp. After six moons of being stuck in the camp, Bluepaw was eager for some exploring. She quickly grew more excited as she thought about this. "Let's get going then. I want to see everything!" she exclaimed enthusiastically.

"That's what I like to hear," he responded to himself. It was good to see Bluepaw so excited to go out and train. "First things first, we are going to visit Thunderclan's border so try to keep up!" When the words left his mouth, the leader dashed towards the Thunderclan border through big puddles, tall grass, and thick mud. It was all over the place but still he managed to know exactly where he was going. It was second nature anymore but to an apprentice, this was all brand new. Every once in a while on their way, he glanced back to see if Bluepaw was keeping up.

Despite Thrushstar's quick pace, Bluepaw was managing to keep up pretty well. She tried to go around the mud puddles, which slowed her down some, but other than that she was walking at a fast pace. As they padded through the trees, she scented the air and made note of what scents surrounded her. It hadn't occurred to her before that the forest was so abundant in various smells. She knew that there were many from hearing warriors speak of it, but she hadn't thought of it as much until she she figured it out herself. It's so big out here she thought happily to herself. Until now, she had known that there was a lot to see, and she had always tried to picture it in her imagination, but in her opinion, it was a much larger picture in person. This was larger than she had ever visualized! Bluepaw continued to brush through the trees and follow Thrushstar to wherever they were headed. Eventually, she had even caught up with her mentor. Once this happened, she evened up her pace a bit.

When they finally arrived at their first border, Thrushstar stopped. Just on the other side of the brush, a terrible smell permeated the air and the sounds of several monsters zooming by was almost deafening. Looking at Bluepaw, he gave her a cautious look. "Be careful near this border," he told her before walking through the bushes and up to the hard black ground that stretched a short way across but was endless left to right. "Welcome to the Thunderpath," he said, looking back at his apprentice. "This is our most dangerous border."

Bluepaw scented the air around the Thunderpath and gagged. "It smells like something died here," she said, coughing over the horrendous scent. "And why is it so noisy?" she complained as large objects unknown to her zoomed by in a flash of lightning.

"Those things that you see going by, those are monsters. They do not stop and they are very dangerous. The good thing is that they do not leave this path for some reason, but that also means that if we try to cross it, they will hurt us. They don't stop for anything. You must remember that," he said, hoping that Bluepaw was getting the message. He didn't want to lose another cat on this path again and this was really the only way he could convey the message.

Bluepaw nodded. "I promise, Thrushstar," she mewed. She wouldn't dare cross it.

Nodding in acknowledgement, Thrushstar quickly marked the border and looked around to which side they would go to next. Finally deciding to go to Skyclan's border, he walked that way, back through the brush next to the Thunderpath and into the comfort of his territory again. "Next we are going to go to Highpine. Stay close," he said as he made his way towards the tall pine trees that reached to the sky.

Bluepaw didn't speak as she trotted after Thrushstar. So far, her first day as an apprentice was interesting, despite the fowl smell from the Thunderpath. Even though the monsters on the Thunderpath were dangerous, it was interesting to the young cat that they never drove off the edge of it. She hated the loud noises that they made as well, but at least she knew better to stay away now. The name itself already had begun to make sense to her. The noises coming from it made it sound like roaring thunder, and the monsters never left the path. I think I get it now, Bluepaw thought to herself. She pushed the thought of the Thunderpath behind, while leaving the memory of it, as she continued to follow Thrushstar to the Highpine, whatever that was.

It took some time, but they finally arrived. As the territory suddenly switched from damp marshland to dry ground and pine trees that reached the sky, Thrushstar tensed up a little bit. This had always been a place he never liked ever since his sister's incident, but he was slowly getting better even though that was quite a long time ago. "Here we are," he said. "This is the border between Shadowclan and Skyclan. This isn't really a border we have to worry about often, but we still need to make sure that it's marked."

Bluepaw panted a little bit after catching up with Thrushstar. After catching her breath, she scented the air so that she would remember SkyClan's scent for the future. She nodded to Thrushstar after she did so.

When Bluepaw took in the sights, Thrushstar looked around quickly to see if there was anything nearby that he might have missed. When there wasn't anything, he continued on. "We have one more border and then we'll be done." Walking that way, he started for Carrionplace.
