Lightpaw's Assessment

Reedheart led Lightpaw behind him, pushing through tall overhanging grass. Today was an important day; an assessment of Lightpaw's skills, to see if she was fit for her warrior name. "You'll hunt three pieces of prey." he explained as a long blade of grass whipped across his face, making him twitch his tail in annoyance. "Once you're done, just start heading back to camp. I'll catch up with you on the way there."

He turned his head back to the apprentice and halted amid a small clearing. "I'll be watching to see how you hunt, but just pretend that I'm not there. You got that?"

Lightpaw bounced up and down in excitement. "Yes Reedheart!" Lightpaw said joyfully as she bounced off. She headed towards the river and tried her luck there. She stood on the edge and made sure that her shadow wasn't over the water and waited. She saw glimpse of silver and a ripple in the water. She quickly scooped at the water and hoped that she would catch the fish.

Reedheart watched silently as Lightpaw bounded off, waiting for the grass to still before quietly following. He stalked a fox-length behind her, moving as carefully as he could so he wouldn't alert her to his presence. The warrior stopped amid a clump of reeds in sight of the shore, just in time to see her paw flash into the water. His murky green eyes flashed in silent judgement, waiting for a flash of silver.

Lightpaw growled angrily as she missed. She moved up stream a bit, knowing that she probably scared off all the fish at the spot that she was at before. She waited. Until she saw another glimpse of silver. "Please please please..." She whispered. She wanted to be a warrior, badly. She waited for the right moment and scooped at the fish as fast as she could. Lightpaw just missed it. She growled again. "I'll try to catch something else!" Lightpaw said to herself. She padded of in search for a mouse.

Lightpaw's ears pricked as she heard a mouse squeak. She immediately crouched down and opened her mouth. She followed the scent to a near-by tree. She spotted the small, but fat, mouse near the roots searching for nuts. Lightpaw stayed as light as she could on her feet. Wait for it, wait for it she said in her mind. Now! She pounced as hard as she could. "Seriously?" She said. She looked around. '"if Reedheart is here,I must look like a fool!" She whispered. Lightpaw padded off, searching for something else.

Lightpaw saw some movement by a bush a few tail lengths away. She crouched down and followed her nose to a rabbit. Lightpaw was as silent as she could possibly be. Then she sprang. Lightpaw sighed. "Will I ever catch any prey?" Lightpaw asked herself. "I feel so embarrassed. If I go back to Reedheart with nothing, I won't ever forgive myself." Lightpaw sighed again and walked away, twords the river. "I can't give up. I'll look mouse-brained if I go back with no prey. I'll fish all night if I have to. I will catch three pieces of prey, and I will be a warrior!"

Lightpaw went back to fishing. She saw a shape of a fish in the water. She quickly tried to scoop the fish out of the water.

Lightpaw growled, as she walked down-stream more. Lightpaw kept fishing. She waited untill she saw a ripple in the water and an outline of yet another fish. Lightpaw repeated the same movements as she did before with the other fish.

Lightpaw saw the fish fly out of the water and land on the bank. Lightpaw ran over and killed the fish with a bite. She buried the fish and want back to fishing. She saw a small fish swimming by, just the right size for a meal. Lightpaw concentrated as she scooped at the fish.
