Turtle the Adventurer - Part 1

Turtle sat on top of the fence that marked the 'border' between the forest and his house-folk's backyard. He was about the size of a new apprentice, around 6½ moons old. He had always been curious about what was outside of his yard, but he would stay with his house-folk of course. Maybe he'd just explore a little, then come home. He was old enough to climb the fence now, so maybe he was old enough to explore, like Zeno!

Leaping off the fence, a few tail-lengths from the forest's border, Turtle hesitated. Something about the shadows of the tree made him nervous, like something was waiting for him. But this just boosted his curiosity. Taking in a deep breath, he smiled an raced forward, letting the foliage swallow him up. Blinking, he gasped in shock, awe shimmering in his eyes. So much...stuff! He could hear the scurrying of little creatures, the blow of leaves across the grass. The trees even smelled new to him, much different from the ones in his house-folk's garden. Suddenly a sharp scent his his nose, like marsh mixed with cat. Was some one coming? Tasting the air, he looked around in curiosity, wondering if this newcomer would be friendly or dangerous. He had grown out of his old kit-like thoughts that made everyone a friend to him. Now he had learned things could be dangerous. Like that time a big bird suddenly picked up a baby turtle from his house-folk's mini pond and carried it away, crushing it slightly in its claws as it did so.
