In Ada’s Eyes

Chapter One: The Twins

Once upon a time, in a town called Muiderport, there lived a family of four. The family consisted of a mother, a father, and two newborn twins; Eila and Ada. The twins’ father was a wealthy man who worked as the chief of the town, and their mother worked in another town bordering Muiderport. The girls were raised by a young nanny, whom they called Missy Mae. When the girls entered their ‘terrible threes’, their father put them into day care.
One day, Missy Mae came to pick the girls up from the day care. Even at their young age, the girls knew from the grim look on their nanny’s face that something bad had happened. Ada, the oldest of the twins, overheard Missy Mae talking to their teacher.
“The girls won’t be coming back, I’m sad to say.” Missy Mae had told the lady. “There was a fire this morning. Their parents were inside and…they didn’t come back out.”
For a long month after the fire, the girls stayed in Missy Mae’s care as she talked to the foster care system. At first she had tried to talk them into letting the girls stay with her, since she had taken care of them since birth, but the foster care did not agree to this. Missy Mae was just too young for them to release two three-year-old girls into her care. It wasn’t before long until the girls’ fates were finalized; they would be put into the foster system as soon as the month was over with.
The end of the month came fast for the twins. The departure from Missy Mae was very emotional for all of them; from Missy Mae hugging the girls and crying, to Ada and Eila sobbing and clinging to their nanny, not understanding what was going on. Soon the girls were ushered into an awaiting care and then sat there in the back, side by side, their hands wrapped tightly around each other as the car drove them away from their home and to a place unknown.

Chapter 2: The Foster System

The girls were put into a foster home extremely fast once they were put into the foster system. The family they were paired with took pity on the two girls and kept them together, thinking that no bad will come from the two little girls at such a young age. Eila and Ada were shy in this new area, keeping only to themselves.
As the girls grew up, Ada started to gain a mischievous side. She started to act out of turn and things began to become missing from the family the two girls lived with. At first the family put it off as just simply misplaced, but soon it became obvious of that had happened; Ada was stealing from the family. When the family confronted Ada on her thievery, Ada lied, saying she did not know what happened to the missing items. Eila, who knew what her sister was doing, but not wanting to get her in trouble, stood up for her big sister, telling their foster parents that Ada had not stolen a thing. The foster parents could tell that the girls were lying. They put the twins back into the foster system, which then paired them up with yet another family.
The girls were kicked out of three more foster families until there was no more available that would take the girls together; they had to be separated. When the girls were told that they had to be separated, Ada lost it. She had lost everything, her home, her parents, and now she was going to lost her only sister and best friend too. Before the families came to pick up the girls, Ada vowed to Eila that one day, she would find her, no matter what it took. She begged her sister to never give up hope, and that one day they would be together again. The girls left each other for the first time that day, only one week before their tenth birthday.

Chapter 3: Muiderport

When Ada turned 13, she ran away from the foster home she was in. She ran to her hometown, Muiderport, where she tracked down the house she had once lived in with her family. The only thing that was left of her childhood house was the skeleton of the building, but to Ada, it was still home. The town members remembered her as a little child, though she had not visited the town for ten years. A neighbor, Mrs. Myler, allowed Ada to use her barn for shelter though she could not help her in any other way, thus was the law.
Ada learned quickly how Muiderport was laid out and soon knew the area like the back of her hand. She started to steal from the shops around town, starting small with a blanket from a cloth shop and some stale loaves from the towns’ bakery. The new members of the town soon knew her as the “Thief in the Night”, since they never saw her out in the sunlight and only caught a glimpse of her in the night time.
Ada stayed in Muiderport for two years, using her time to collect as much information on the foster system and her sister as she could. She would spend day and night in the town’s research center on the computer, or asking around the neighborhoods for any information they could give her.
One day, when Ada was walking back to Mrs. Myler’s barn from the library, she heard a sound behind her. She shook it off as a dog or some other type of animal wandering the streets, and kept walking, not so much as glancing behind her. It wasn’t until Ada took a wrong turn into an alley did she realize the trouble she was in. At the end of the alley stood the silhouette of a large man, his face obscured in shadows.
Though Ada was not entirely frightened, she did not dare continue to walk towards the man and decided instead to leave the alley and find her way to the barn. Though, when she turned around, she found her exit blocked. Another man was standing there in her way, a gruesome scar disfiguring his face. The last thing Ada remembered of that night was the man with the scar walking to her and pulling a bag over her face. After that, everything went dark.

Chapter 4: The Cabin

When Ada came to, she found herself in a room that looked similar to the inside of a small cabin; the walls were wooden as was the floor. She was lying on a small cot, her hands shackled to the wall. Adjacent to her cot was another one similar to the one she was on. Though it was dark in the room, Ada could just make out a small shape huddled on the cot.
Ada could not get a better look at the figure, the light was too dim. She laid there on the cot for what seemed like hours until commotion came from outside the door in the middle of the room. A few moments later, the man with the scar came in. He paid no mind to Ada, but went over to the other cot, pulling the girls head back. From the way the door was cracked, light was cast upon the figures’ face, and what Ada saw caused her heart to leap. Laying in the cot adjacent to her, was the only member left in Ada’s family; her sister.
Ada could not see what the man with the scar was doing to her sister, but from the sound of her cries, she could tell it was not good. Ada’s soul cried out to her sister, hoping she would be okay. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the man let go of Eila and left the room, slamming the door shut. Ada used this moment of silence to sit up, her big eyes focused on Eila.
“Eila?” Ada called out, surprised at how shaky her voice sounded in the cabin room, “Eila, it’s me.”
The girl on the cot stirred, shifting her weight to focus on where the voice at come from. When the girl finally replied, there was sharpness in her voice that caused Ada to flinch. “Who are you?”
Ada was quiet, wondering if she had seen wrong; if the girl on the cot wasn’t actually her sister but someone else. She shook her head slightly to clear her thoughts; she would know her sister from everywhere, even her voice. Swallowing back her nerves, Ada chose her words carefully. “Eila, it’s your sister. It’s Ada.”

Chapter 5: The Reunion

A dreadful silence filled the room, but it did not last long. After a few moments, Ada could hear a faint sound of someone sobbing, then the strangled cry of relief from her sister on the cot from her. “Oh Ada! I knew you would find me!” her sister cried out.
Ada was filled with giddy happiness, but it soon died off as she glanced around her surroundings. She was happy that she finally found her sister after five long years, but she knew that they could not truly rejoice until they escape this place.
“Eila, you need to tell me about this place.” Ada told her younger sister, the tone in her voice strong, “We need to get out of here.”
Eila relayed as much information she could to Ada, telling her what she could remember; that they were in the woods somewhere, that the men were only here once in the morning and once at night, and that when they weren’t, the door was always locked. Through all this, Ada worked swiftly on the chains keeping her to the cot. After a few years on the streets, she could finally use the tricks she picked up for something good.
As soon as Eila finished explaining their situation to Ada, the handcuffs around Ada’s wrists fell onto the ground with a loud CLICK. “I know what to do, Eila.” Ada told her sister, getting off of the cot and moving to her, “I’m going to get us out of here. I just need to know one thing; do you trust me?”
“Of course.” Came the reply.

Chapter 6: The Escape

Ada soon got Eila out of the chains that held her to the bed, but told Eila not to take them completely off just yet. They were to wait until night fall for their escape.
“But the men will come back!” Eila said her eyes wide with fright.
“I know,” Ada told her, keeping her voice soothing, “But we need to cover of nightfall to keep us from being caught. There’s a possibility that they might come back during the day, and if we try to leave now, they might catch us.”
Once this sank in, Eila nodded and loosely put the chains back around her wrist, making sure she could still squeeze out of them when nightfall came. Ada smiled at her sister, realizing how brave she must be to had been here all alone for so long. Ada the followed her own advice and went back to her cot, putting the handcuffs back on her wrists.
That night, the man with the scar came back in, but instead of going to Eila’s cot, he wandered over to Ada’s. Grabbing onto her hair, the man pulled Ada’s head up, forcing her to look at him. When she finally did, he slammed her head back into the cot, making her cry out in pain. When the man finally left the room, Ada was in tears, but she did not let that get to her; she was going to get out of here with her sister.
Once the house was quiet, the girls quickly slipped out of the chains and walked over to the door. As Eila had said, the door was locked, but Ada quickly was able to mess with the locking mechanism and managed to unlock it. Holding hands, Eila and Ada ran out of the room and through the door, stopping only to cast a glance behind them at the house as they dashed into the forest.
The sun was rising when they girls finally stumbled upon a small road. Beside the road was a sign, saying Buiberlin, which Ada recognized as a place a few towns away from Muiderport. She squeezed her sisters hand tightly, her grin flashing as she finally turned to her sister.
“We made it, Eila. We’re free.”
