Poppystar knew that Pigeonpounce was ready for the full responsibilities of a medicine cat. She had done so much for the clan already despite her limited instruction. She knew her herbs, she had enough wherewithal to know when injuries were too grievous to be ignored, and she had made the trip to the Moonstone a few times by now to guide apprentices toward the warrior path.
Pigeonpounce still had a lot of doubts, but Poppystar knew that she was ready.
Poppystar went to see Pigeonpounce early in the morning. Pigeonpounce was already in the medicine den, and Poppystar just peeked in at first, watching her work and organize herbs. She smiled. Her former apprentice was always a hard worker, and that remained true as she became a medicine cat as well.
“Pigeonpounce,” Poppystar greeted to make herself known at the entrance. “I wanted to speak to you…You’ve worked very hard. You’ve shown clear dedication, and it’s clear that you have learned all that you can on your own.” She moved forward to stand before her. “I know that you are still nervous, and you keep expecting to find reason as to why you should not have this role…But you are a great medicine cat for this clan, and I know the stars would agree. I want to make that official. Let me take you to the Moonstone so you may be granted with the full knowledge of a medicine cat by our ancestors.”

Poppystar’s voice at the mouth of the den made Pigeonpounce jump. She nearly trampled a cluster of leaves underpaw with her reactionary flinch. But she was quick to settle, fur flattening and paw settling somewhere safer as she turned toward her leader. ”Poppystar,” she returned with a nod. Her tail waved across the ground, welcoming, as Poppystar moved closer into her space. She was starting to smile, too, but then her mouth twisted into a line of discontent. Pigeonpounce’s ears twitched and half-lowered. The sensible part of her had known this was coming eventually, perhaps sooner than she would have liked, but… knowing didn’t make the words sound any clearer in her ears. Pigeonpounce blinked a few times. Her mouth fell open, then shut just as quickly. What was the point in voicing her concerns? Poppystar knew them already, and spoke in assurance of them.
Pigeonpounce sighed. Her eyes traveled down to her paws. ”I… I dunno if I’ll ever feel ready,” she murmured. Her paws shifted restlessly against the den’s floor. ”But… but if we wait till ‘M ready, we’ll be waitin’ forever.” She took a deep, steeling breath. She had learned a lot, especially for lacking a formal mentor. She was… better than she gave herself credit for. And she hadn’t heard from Starlingflare in seasons, and Scarletflare had assured her that things would be fine no matter what, and--
And Poppystar believed in her.
Pigeonpounce sighed again before raising her head. She let her smile form this time and shifted back towards her herb stores. ”So… I- I think that’s a good idea. We should go.”

Poppystar smiled back at Pigeonpounce. She hated that Pigeonpounce still did not have as much belief in her own abilities as Poppystar believed she deserved to, but she was at least prepared to move forward. That was enough to ask of her.
She let Pigeonpounce prepare the travel herbs and they each took them with a meal. When they were ready, they set out together, with Poppystar pressed to Pigeonpounce’s flank. Their travel was rather quiet, and just enjoyed the territories they passed through on the way to the Highstones. It felt so far away; Poppystar hadn’t been there since she got her own lives. Now, Pigeonpounce would be earning fresh wisdom from the stars. She knew that the future of RiverClan was looking brighter.
Time Skip.
It was growing dark by the time they arrived at the Highstones. Poppystar was exhausted and her paws ached and she was not looking forward to the journey home, but for now, there would be good things in store for Pigeonpounce. She paused outside the mouth of the cave and turned towards Pigeonpounce. “You know the way in, but stick close to me anyway. I have some things to ask of you before the Moonstone.”
They carefully crept through the darkness towards the glowing rock in the base of the cave. Poppystar’s heart squeezed with longing to join Pigeonpounce, hoping to see her lost friends again, but she knew that this was Pigeonpounce’s moment.
The cave was cold with leafbare on the horizon, and her paw pads stung with the cold as they arrived at the base of the cave. Poppystar turned to Pigeonpounce and gave her another bright smile before jumping into the ceremonial words needed for Pigeonpounce to meet StarClan. “I, Poppystar, leader of RiverClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look upon this medicine cat apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help, she will serve her Clan for many moons.” She smiled warmly at Pigeonpounce. Truly, Poppystar truly believed the words she was saying. Pigeonpounce would be a great medicine cat. And, with aid from StarClan, she would be around for a long, long time. “Pigeonpounce. Do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?”

It was… surprisingly nice, walking with Poppystar. Not that Pigeonpounce had expected the journey to be sour--certainly not. Poppystar was always pleasant to be around, her company always nice. But Pigeonpounce had expected to be more… agitated than she was, after they set out. Nerves bit at her pads while they walked, but she found with her former mentor pressing against her side with nearly every step they took, there was little room for her anxieties to actually crowd in. The crags of Mothermouth finally came into view as the sun began to set around them, and they reached the entrance of the cavern only once darkness had swallowed the world.
Pigeonpounce took a final deep breath--one that made her feel like she’d been holding her air in since they’d left camp, with the way it shuddered through her--and looked up at Poppystar. ”Okay,” she said softly, nodding as she spoke. She did as she was told and remained close, letting both her leader and the grooves of ancient pawsteps guide her path forward as they descended through the tunnels. Eventually they came into the cavern that housed the Moonstone, and Pigeonpounce took a deep breath as she regarded its glow. This was happening… she was going to be a medicine cat soon, in more than just the isolation of her role.
Her whiskers twitched once before she turned to regard Poppystar. Round blue eyes blinked slowly as the ceremonial words washed over and through her. A thick swallow, though she couldn’t quite manage an accompanying breath. Pigeonpounce lowered her head in a reverential nod. ”Y-yeah,” she said softly. She remained bowed for several moments before raising her head again. Her gaze was firm when she met Poppystar’s; not without fear, but unwavering despite it. ”I-I do. I promise.”

Poppystar regarded Pigeonpounce with shining eyes. She could tell that Pigeonpounce was still afraid and still nervous, but there was a difference in how she conducted herself now. There was a resolution, like she had made up her mind at one point between them talking about her uncertainties and now. It was good to see. It made Poppystar even more certain that Pigeonpounce was ready to take on the full title of medicine cat and aid their clan.
When Pigeonpounce agreed, Poppystar smiled and replied, “Then I give your true name as a medicine cat. Perchstar named you Pigeonpounce when you became a warrior, and it’s a suitable name indeed—but as you venture into the world of a medicine cat, I want to give you a new name to carry with you. From this moment on, you will be known at Pigeonsun.”
The sky, the star, and the sun – they were the three cats that led RiverClan, and they would keep their clan safe and happy. Poppystar missed Perchstar all of the time, but she was still happy with who was by her side today. She was happy to have Pigeonsun.
“StarClan honors your eagerness and your determination, we we welcome you as a full medicine cat of RiverClan.” Poppystar’s eyes softened like gentle dew on leaves. She moved forward and rested her muzzle on top of Pigeonsun’s head. She purred quietly, displaying her love for her former-apprentice. Poppystar hoped that there would be good things in store for Pigeonsun in the future, and not just anxiety and despair as there had been for previous medicine cats.
She stepped back and looked to the Moonstone. “It’s time for you to convene with StarClan. Lay down and touch the stone with your nose. I’ll be here during the night, and in the morning we can head back home.” Poppystar settled down onto the ground a couple of paces away. She rested her chin on her paws and smiled. “I’ll see you in the morning, Pigeonsun.”
