Wolfpaw
Did I play games in my youth?..
Time passed like water dripping slowly from a crevice in a rock. And by that, Wolfpaw meant barely at all. At times he was awake, staring into nothingness and letting the world go by. A fly could land on his iris, and he would not have felt it. Other times, he slept. And when he was doing none of that, when none of it appealed to him at all, he thought deeply. Thought of if he had ignored Quillsplashes intervention, and went for the throat. But all the same, he would be dead, and there would be none left to protect his family. Nobody else could do it, not without knowing what was at stake. But, if he told them, if he told them fiends walked in his dreams and tried to twist the minds of those around him, surely they would be her next victim?
And it was then, deep in that still thought that made him appear rigid and frozen, when a shadow passed his vision. He blinked, ready to snap at whomever it was to stop standing so close to him; until he locked eyes with Leopardstar. Leopardstar. His time had come, then. He was almost so certain, so outrageously certain that his pelt began to prick and muscles tensed to flee. Had she decided to kill him after all? He would not be surprised. With the name of 'star', surely she was beholden to their inclination? Bound to them. Infested by them.

Something tugged at Leopardstar as she approached the apprentice who had become a captive in his own camp. Something between pity and guilt; a kind of sympathy for the situation she was ultimately responsible for. He seemed tense and still, as if frozen in time--or frozen in thought, perhaps--and she kept herself a few paces away for safety's sake. Distance enough that if he were to leap for her she could react in kind, but posture relaxed enough to disguise her intent.
(That was easy enough. It wasn't as if she was afraid; certainly not for herself.)
"Wolfpaw," she said, offering a softness that felt strange even to herself in this situation. But what good would making him feel threatened, more than he already must under constant guard, do for anyone? He was still here, still standing, because he was still only a child. She was offering him a chance and knew that she needed to make that as clear as possible. "How are you feeling?"

Wolfpaw
Did I play games in my youth?..
The --star spoke to him, and for a moment, he forgot to hide his disgust. He knew what was in that mind. That roiling mass that pulled him to oblivion. She was in Her clutches too, surely. That fiend, infecting the minds of so many. Fishpaw. Quillsplash. And he was certain, Leopardstar. He looked down, eyes following the gap in between them. His lip twitched. Fear, disgust, disdain? He did not know, but it pleased him nonetheless, if that word could be counted as what he felt. He moved his eyes up again.
"I am well," He answered drolely. "Stiff. There is little moving to be done. Sleep is not easy, either. It is all I do. Are you well, leader?"

At the apprentice's question, far from uncalled for, the leader let out a sigh. "As well as any cat could expect, given the circumstances," she said simply. "But this is about you. I'll continue to speak with the guards and with Nightowl, of course, but I want to hear your words. Do you believe you have healed? Do you think you could return to training without further incidents?"

Wolfpaw was quiet, thoughts visibly jumping across his expression at her put question. He tilted his head in tandem with him. To lie, or to be honest? Well, not that he would be lying if he told her that he was healed. There was nothing wrong with him in the first place. Not to his mind. His tail swished along his front paws.
"I am well," He replied. "I will cause no problems. Everyone is safe, are they not? I see that they are, now. I will keep to myself."

Leopardstar couldn't deny that she felt uneasy dealing with Wolfpaw, on all sides; but if he was willing to give his word that he could conduct himself, she wasn't going to deny him that chance. He was only a child.
Instead of voicing this to him--he was a child, still, with his own burden to bear--she simply nodded once. "I will take that under advisement when I give my reports," was what she said.
Everyone is safe, he said.
Leopardstar could only hope that the words were true, and that the firm instructions she'd given the rest of the Clan to tolerate no threats or assaults had settled in their minds; just in case they weren't. There would be other danger yet, but she felt a faint hope that at the very least it shouldn't be due to Wolfpaw.
