Ryepaw
Comin' thro the rye...

There was much, so much that happened after that Gathering that he didn't remember. The initial cut, he would never forget that. He saw it in the back of his minds eye in the lapses in and out of wakeness and slumber, the heavy paw coming down and tearing everything in its wake. The blooming pain, how he did not feel it at first. How he felt only weakness, that cold spread of fear and the notion that his leg would not obey him. Then the notion that he could not see from one eye, that his hearing was strange and he could not stop drooling. The pain came when he realised it was not drool, but blood that was seeping into his mouth from a gash that had torn the top-left lip open.

He remembered moments, being heaped onto the medicine den floor and the shadow of red behind him. He had bled a lot, it seemed. Perhaps that was why he was so tired. Every paw that was placed on him was hot, burning agony. He did not have the energy, or ability, even, to scream or shout. His throat hurt all the same, but not as much as the rest. There were moments he thought he had died, a blurry transition from nothingness into everything. All the pain returned as one, and he could see movement. He could hear muffled, murky voices, and then darkness again.

When he woke up this time, however, he remained awake. Not that his body would obey him. He twitched and pulled at his paws to move, to get under him, but every tiny strain or hint of effort had him choke in pain and collapse again. He was covered in something. His own blood, yes, and he believed they were cobwebs. They smelled strong of something. Something acidic, tangy, strong. Something that stinged if it got into the wounds. Whatever wounds they were. He still could not see. Perhaps his eye was covered with cobwebs too, and maybe his ear was the same. Maybe that was why he could only hear from one side.
...poor body.

Hemlockfox"Act like I don't need your love and you call my bluff"
-T4 Hybrid MC-
🩸

Hemlockfox winced as he curled in on himself, ears pressed against his skull, and ran his tongue gingerly along the jagged edges of an angry wound across the broad side of his flank. He'd been meticulously tending to the other injured cats in WindClan - Ryepaw specifically - and kept forgetting about his own wounds as a result. He kept the deep claw marks clean, of course, but he didn't want to use his dwindling store of herbs on himself when his clanmates needed it more. He cut a look to Ryepaw, who's face was a patchwork mess of poultices, cobwebs, and bright red wounds, and frowned.

The young tom had been in a restless sleep for days now...it was concerning. As important as rest was, he needed food, water, herbs. Hemlockfox could massage the necessary herbs down Ryepaw's throat on occasion, but he worried that he'd choke if he tried to feed him some prey in a similar way. Now and then, cats would visit too and ask how Ryepaw was. Hemlockfox would frown and say that nothing had changed since the day before, but that he was alive, his tail twitching unhappily behind him.

Today, however, the shifting from Ryepaw's corner of the medicine den were a little louder - a little more insistent - than usual. Hemlockfox rasped his tongue over the warm, puffy, wounds one last time before he turned to look curiously in Ryepaw's direction. At first, he wasn't sure if the tom was awake but, upon closer inspection, he noticed a change in his breathing and then, miraculously, movement. Stars, he'd rip open his wounds if he kept at it! Growling, Hemlockfox hurried to Ryepaw's side and carefully pressed a paw to his uninjured flank to hold him gently in his nest.

"Don't move." He murmured, blue eyes roving over the various dressings almost nervously. It had been hard to stop the bleeding when Ryepaw was brought into his den, he didn't want the apprentice tearing his wounds open again. "You've been hurt pretty badly." He added, his voice softer than usual, but still firm. "Your injuries are under control for now, but I need you to stay still for a little while, okay?" Hemlockfox peered into Ryepaw's sole eye for understanding. "Don't try to talk. Blink once for yes and twice for no, alright? Do you want some water? You've been asleep for a while - you need it." It was clearly not really a suggestion despite being phrased as one. Still, Hemlockfox waited diligently by Ryepaw's side for a response.

Ryepaw
Some shepherd inhales smoke from a burning bush...

Ryepaw went to speak initially. Habit. All he did was talk. He felt air squeeze past swollen lips and a tight throat, a moist and crunchy wheeze. And when he moved his tongue to speak it caused some sort of knock-on effect, a squeezing of his throat and a splutter that caused white-hot pain and panic. His breathing wheezed and stuttered, and he went to thrash-- Only for a paw to settle on his flank and he stilled. Rationale flooded in then.

His eye, bleary and shaky still, moved to focus on Hemlockfox. His words were muffled, hard to understand, so he looked to his mouth then. He couldn't lip read. But he'd try.

One slow, deliberate blink. Wink? He couldn't feel his other eyelid move. Probably dressing too tightly packed. Maybe.
...or eats moldy rye bread and sees God.

Hemlockfox"Act like I don't need your love and you call my bluff"
-T4 Hybrid MC-
🩸

Hemlockfox nodded to himself at Ryepaw's blink, if it could be called that, and retreated to the back of his den to scrap together a ball of moss for the apprentice. He packed it together tightly and dipped it into a clear puddle of water that often accumulated in a shallow dip in the stone. Once the moss was soaked through, he returned to Ryepaw's side with the moss clutched gingerly between his jaws. "Don't move." He meowed sternly around the moss before, with a huff, he transferred it to his paws. Mouth empty now, the medicine cat gaze landed on Ryepaw's singular eye.

"Open your mouth. I'm going to squeeze the water out for you." He added, softer this time. Once the apprentice complied and swallowed as much water as he could bear, Hemlockfox set the moss aside and allowed his gaze to travel along the length of Ryepaw's face, taking in the various wrappings that encompassed him. Tact had never been his strong suit so, once Ryepaw seemed able to listen, he began. "You were hurt at the gathering." He spoke bluntly at first, a hint of compassion beneath the simple words.

"One of the wolves caught you with a pretty nasty blow. You're probably starting to really feel it now that you're awake." He blinked slowly at the younger tom, hoping he wasn't too delirious to understand what was happening. "I need to change your dressings now. If you want poppy seeds so you can sleep through it, I won't hold it against you." A part of him had wanted poppy seeds of his own every time he had to tend to his own injuries delt by the wolves and his weren't nearly as bad as Ryepaw's.
