It had been a long journey, and nowhere near easy. Cats who were once strangers now sharing a bond forged in fire. They had learned to put their lives in each other's paws, putting aside Clan rivalries, all for the shared goal of going back home. Each trial they faced, they had been forced to face together. Learning to have faith in the abilities of others, and seeing each cat in an entirely new light. They hunted together, they fought together. They explored lands no Clan cat had set paw in, relying on pure faith and perseverance to guide them on their path home. Their journey had not come without loss. But now, with the fates of Cardinalpaw and Bearpaw unknown, the group has found themselves on familiar territory. Standing in the clearing of Fourtrees, they look around, and know that they have made it home. But after so long spent relying on each other, one challenge remains. How do they say goodbye after all they have been through?

At first, Wiggleworm had been hesitant to follow directions from some strange loner. They'd consulted loners and kittypets alike time and time again and their advice had always been lackluster to say the least. Though, he was glad that, this time, the loner had pulled through. When asked about a land that was home to five great clans of wild cats, she knew the tales all too well and had been happy to point them in the direction home. Even if her help was given only to ensure that they didn't stay in her home, he was grateful.
Of course, once familiar lands were in sight and the promise of home was more than a distant dream, there was this pit in his chest that he couldn't remedy. He and his travelling companions had faced many trials together - two of which resulted in loss. Cardinalpaw and Bearpaw were gone. He did not know exactly where they had gone or even if they were alive. Searching for them was what had delayed their return home by at least a moon. He simply couldn't bring himself to leave without his niece - to face ThunderClan knowing that he'd failed to protect her. Not just her, but ShadowClan's young apprentice too. He would have to visit them and explain...someday.
Eyes somewhere distant, Wiggleworm tried to see a way he could have done things differently but, no matter how hard he wracked his brain for solutions, he always came to the same conclusion. It was his fault. It wouldn't have mattered what he'd done differently in the twolegplace. If he hadn't left the camp that night, Bearpaw would've never followed him to fourtrees. Guilt eating away at his stomach, Wiggleworm led the way into the hollow once more, any words he'd like to say trapped in his throat. He'd spent moons beside Elmstorm and Hornetpaw - the latter of which certainly deserved a warrior name now. Even if Hornetpaw was the son of that scoundrel Sunfire. He was nothing like his father. He was a good cat.
Finally, they came to a rest in the center of the clearing. It was just how he remembered it. Licking his lips, Wiggleworm looked to each of his companions, his heart feeling heavy. It seemed strange that the three of them would have to part ways now. They were almost...family, to him. "I...suppose this is goodbye." It seemed surreal, but this was really it. They were home. They all had lives and families to return to. Silverdusk's face floated in his mind for a moment, and he smiled sadly. "It is not forever. We will still see each other here every full moon, at gatherings?" Maybe it was just him that felt this way, sad to be parting, but he hoped not. He hoped their bondshad been forged by more than survival.

Elmstorm felt weak on his paws by the time the group had finally reached fourtrees. To think, they were finally here, after all this time. Elmstorm almost wanted to collapse, to just stay there forever.
Of course, they weren't home yet. But their troubles were finally over. They were home. It felt like ages since he had seen his rivers. Since he had a good bite of salmon. Stars, he would finally be able to see everyone again! Sprucebark, Scorchlight, Poppystar, Featherpaw, he'd finally had his family back!
He could almost cry at the relief he felt. A feeling he had not felt in a long time. But when he looked to his companions, he felt his heart break all over again. Looking at Wiggleworm and Hornetpaw, suddenly he didn't know what to say. These weren't just cats from another Clan, not anymore. He didn't even know if friends was the right word for what they had, the term seeming so insincere compared to the bond they now shared. He wouldn't be standing here right now if it had not been for those two. He would still be in the belly of that twoleg monster.
He owed them so much.
He couldn't help but think of Bearpaw and Cardinalpaw. They should have been standing there with them. Even Cardinalpaw, as irritating as she had been, should have had a place at their side.
When Wiggleworm spoke, Elmstorm gave a stiff nod, returning the smile. "Of course. And- and at borders, too! There will always be a friendly face just on the other side of that river, alright?"
Turning to the senior tom of the group, Elmstorm padded up, butting his head against his shoulder. The words he spoke next was just for him. "She'll make it home. Don't worry. Bearpaw is strong. I'll be keeping a look out in case she turns up, and when she does, I'll escort her home myself."
With that being said, Elmstorm backed off, giving a smile and a nod to Hornetpaw.
And with a wave of his tail, he made his way to RiverClan territory. He was going home.
