FOXPAW
And if the world don't break, I'll be shaking it...
A soft wind blew through the trees. Branches rattled in that breeze, clacking quietly against each other. Chittering from squirrels resting in the loftier branches drifted down to Foxpaw’s ears. Deftly, he leaped toward a nearby tree, securing his claws in the bark. Even though he was young, he was a fast learner, and climbing came naturally once he got the hang of it. Foxpaw pulled himself up into the oak until he reached a low branch to perch on. Glancing up, he searched through the full green boughs for any sign of movement. He could see nothing except the leaves stirring from the wind. It felt, for a moment, like his pursuit had been in vain.
Just as his ears were beginning to tilt back, he saw a fluffy tail flash briefly into view. Keen eyes got wide and his pupils constricted. Little rat… you almost got away. Moving again, Foxpaw began to scale higher up the tree. Nothing, not even the way the branches grew more wobbly and unsure, could slow his ascent. Once he was high enough up, Foxpaw found another branch to catch himself on so he could regain his balance for a moment. Paws gripping the bark, he steadied himself and tilted his head around. Quickly, he spotted the squirrel--just a branch below him. Riveted by getting higher, Foxpaw had accidentally overshot.
Slinking backwards, Foxpaw carefully made his way down back down a level. Twigs snapped off under his paws, but the squirrel thankfully didn’t bolt. Uncaring of the distance between him and his prey, Foxpaw gathered his muscles and shoved himself off the tree. Very little could be done to correct his path once he realized he’d once again overshot. With a bark of alarm that sent the squirrel racing away, his claws flailed, grasping desperately at bark and leaves as he slid and fell down through the branches. Xanthic leaves followed him, fluttering down in the wake of his tumbling. Yelping, Foxpaw landed roughly against a lower, thicker branch, and he instantly dug his foreclaws in to keep from sliding any further off while his hindpaws wheeled in the air. Zeal had nearly killed him!

Stormwatcher was less than thrilled to put it mildly that he got stuck on another hunting patrol... didnt the high ranks remember he had 2 of his own apprentices!? He was even more grumpy than usual as he plotted along behind the patrol.
Foxpaw was out in the lead and Stormwatcher while he did have a protective nature of all appretnices was fine letting his younger patrol mate go on ahead... what was gonna happen anyways? They were deep in skyclan land.
He was muttering to himself quietly sulking and seething a bit in self pity that he had to do all these patrols.
By the time he had actually caught up to the yongster, he was halfway up some tree on a climb after a squirrel.
Stormwatcher stood near the trees base in case the squirrel outflanked his hunting partner and went back down the tree so that he could catch it there. He squinted upwards sheidling his eyes with a front paw from the sun above.
What in stars was this apprentice doing anyhow? He had plain overshot things. Stormwatcher watched him turning to try and go back down. Yea that made sense.
Then he jumped??
Stormwatcher stared - well that did NOT make sense. He had that sensation hit him where you are watching an accident but can't do anything to stop it, everything appeared to slow down as he watched the apprentice tumble down.
catch a branch... come on come on! his mind yelled.
As Foxpaw thudded into a lower branch Stormwatcher stood there frozen a second or two longer before letting out a long exhale from his chest. His heart still beating a mile a minute. That was a much closer call than he would have liked to admit... Wolfstar would have his tail if he let an appretnice get hurt out here, and he would be pretty upset with himself too, as gruff and grumpy as he was, he did have a soft spot for apprentices.
He wasnt really sure what to do... let Foxpaw get up and shake it off on his own?? Ask if he was okay?? Would that hurt the youngsters pride?
"erm... ouch ... well that sucks" he managed to meow. He laid his ears back a bit biting at his tongue, sympathy had never been his strong suit.
"you will walk it off no worries" he meowed hoping that would indeed be the case.
His logic was at least somewhat sound, he wasnt going to panic and make Foxpaw feel worse about it... he had figured play it off like it was as minor a thing as pulling a claw on something. That way the appretnice wouldnt feel bad about anything... But he had no idea what he was supposed to do after watching a clanmate almost go splat against the forest floor. Any worse and the crows would be having Foxpaw for dinner tonight.
He rubbed his head with a front paw, he had a major headache, just watching the close call was enough to make him stressed out, he couldnt imagine what poor foxpaw felt right about now.
This was not how he expected today to go

And if the world don't break, I'll be shaking it...
Foxpaw’s heart was still thudding in his chest, his claws still dug painfully deep into the branch he’d caught himself against, when Stormwatcher’s voice drifted up. For a moment, his heart sank; his patrol was supposed to be further behind him than that. No one was supposed to see his little blunder in the trees. Foxpaw swallowed tight, feeling preemptive shame burn up his throat, but--there was no scolding for his foolish. No pity masked as concern, which he did not need. Just a gruff you’ll walk it off. A grin slowly spread onto the pointed tom’s expression, and he expelled a steadying breath. He was fine. He hadn’t miserably died in his fall, and while being seen through it still made his pelt burn, it was hardly addressed. This was okay.
Slowly, his claws eased out of the wood and Foxpaw leaned slightly to the side to peer down at Stormwatcher. Looking down made his stomach lurch, but he swallowed the feeling back. ”Heh. Yeah--I’m all good.” Finally, he managed to straighten out on the branch.
While climbing down was tempting--he’d certainly had enough of the trees for today--Foxpaw didn’t want to return to the ground empty-pawed. He wasn’t going to let a little fall like that scare him! Or make himself look like a coward in front of Stormwatcher. So, not without a hefty amount of trepidation, Foxpaw made his way back into the higher branches. Thankfully, his clattering hadn’t scared everything in the woods away--there was another squirrel up along the way. Foxpaw carefully made his way up after it, creeping onto its branch with more careful paws and letting the foliage cover him until he was close enough to shoot to the end of the branch. He must have rocked the limb, though, because the squirrel had darted off with a chitter before he could even attempt to close his paws around it. At least this time he hadn't fallen, coming to a halt and gripping the branch tight once he realized the prey was lost. Still, Foxpaw cursed under his breath.
Foxpaw attempted to catch a squirrel... attempt unsuccessful. -2 EP.
Mistypaw was quick to pad up behind Stormwatcher, looking up at Foxpaw. “Ooh, Asterpaw’s gonna love hearing about this!” she called teasingly. Not that she hadn’t fallen earlier today, but nobody needed to know that. “I bet you’ll end up the last of us to be a warrior!” Her tone was simply playful mockery, the barbed words normal teasing to her. She turned back to her own hunting.
Not rolling because Nerd is exhausted and Misty doesn’t need the req.

Snowpaw was as quiet as the thing he was named after. His bristled at the sight of the falling Foxpaw, his eyes wide, but no sound could come out. To his relief, the other apprentice seemed fine. "Walk it off" Stormwatcher suggested. Was that all you could do after falling from a tree? Snowpaw's ears flicked. He supposed without a medicine cat, that really was the only viable option.
He closed in on a quail he watched dart into a bush, hoping it didn't notice him.
Snowpaw attempted to catch a bird! He was [SUCCESSFUL!] -2EP
His claws shot through the bush like a flash of lightning and decapitated the bird. The quail was dead before it hit the ground. Still quietly, Snowpaw picked up his catch and looked for a spot to hide it for later.
