True to her word, Wolfstar had roused Spiderpaw from the apprentice's den early the next day. "We'll avoid the worst of the sun this way," the leader had called cheerfully over her shoulder as she led Spiderpaw from camp. And after that little mishap she'd had while on a patrol recently, Wolfstar had decided to be a little more careful about overworking herself in greenleaf's misery. And if she'd been lectured into being careful, so too would her clanmates.
"I suppose we can start by you telling me what you know how to do... Or show off, if you're inclined, the creek's the best place in the territory for hunting." She mewed as the sparkling waters of the creek that cut through the territory came into view. "If you're proficient with ground prey, I'll teach you to climb before I start you after hunting birds up there." She nodded at the green canopy above. "Unless you'd rather spar first?"

Nerves made her steps a tad shaky as she followed her mentor further into the forest.
Ohboyohboyohboy.
She didn't want Wolfstar to regret her decision right off the bat, but she was never the best when it came to fighting. She'd been trying to help pick up prey near the camp here and there with little success so far, but surely she was less likely to fumble that. Her ears flicked up, trying to hone in on the sounds of anything potentially skittering about nearby. "Ah, yeah I can hunt first! Is there something specific you want me to go for or...?"

"Go for what suits you." The leader mewed, glancing at Spiderpaw, "Birds and squirrels are most common here and what most of us are most comfortable hunting, but there's mice too, and even lizard and rabbit have been known to wind up on our fresh kill pile on occasion. Prey is prey." Some of that extra prey wasn't to Wolfstar's tastes, but she would not raise a picky clan. Falconmoon had caught a few rabbits in his time, Lighttail had been born in Shadowclan and still enjoyed prey that was more common there. So long as her clan was fed and the prey was caught on Skyclan territory, Wolfstar would be happy.

"Alright, birds and squirrels... I can do that." In truth, she wasn't sure if she could. The terrain here was very different and she hadn't fully gotten used to it. Birds were easy where she was from, but here there were more places for them to escape to. As for squirrels, they couldn't be much different from any other rodent... right?
Only one way to find out.
She stepped forward as quietly as she could. The leaves and twigs beneath her paws made it a bit more difficult. The ground was uneven, but not so much so that she couldn't navigate it at all. It was just different. Maybe it'd be better if she stayed still for now? Let them come to her. She slunk a little lower, her eyes unfocused as she focused on what she could hear. Benefits of being in the forest, everything was quieter. The fast, monsterous twoleg beasts were far from her ears now, and the hum of her surroundings consisted more of the chorus of life around her and the dancing leaves above instead of the dull, constant drone that radiated from seemingly everything at home. She exhaled slowly, letting her eyes fall shut. If she could just isolate those sounds... pick them apart and...
A small rustle caught her attention, not far from them and she blinked her eyes open as one ear swiveled towards it.
There.
She lifted her body slowly, inching towards the sound as quietly as she could manage. A small, bushy-tailed rodent darted into view and she paused. Beady eyes met hers for a long moment, before it seemingly dismissed her and turned away to continue its forage. She had a chance. One more step and...
Spiderpaw pounced, long claws sinking into the squirrel's tail fluff and drawing it in quickly before it could get away. A quick snap of her teeth and it was done. Not a perfect catch, she knew that, but it was a catch. She lifted herself up with her catch, turning to look back at Wolfstar. "I got it!"

Wolfstar stepped back and fell silent as her apprentice focused her attention on finding prey. Squirrel, and the leader gave a silent nod of approval, though Spiderpaw was focused on her prey and couldn't see it, of course. She watched as the younger she-cat lowered herself into a crouch and then made a leap, snagging the creature by the tail and pulling it toward her.
"Good, be mindful of your tail and where you place your paws, though. Even a small pebble or stray leaf can be treacherous for success out here."
The flutter of wings drew Wolfstar's attention, and without think she turned toward it. A wren among the branches above... Her Skyclan heritage made leaping into a tree and traversing the branches easy enough, bringing down the wren with a final leap and a well placed paw. Wolfstar dropped back to the forest floor, nodding at Spiderpaw. "We'll bury these to keep them from attracting attention, then continue hunting. We'll collect them on the way back." She mewed, stashing the bird safely inthe small space created by the roots of a tree.

"Er, right. Tail and paws..." She nodded and quickly buried her catch beside her mentor's. Man this was a little nerve wracking, but Wolfstar hadn't smacked her yet so she had to be doing alright at least. This could probably be going better though, right? Wolfstar wanted to know what all Mutiny could do. Spiderpaw wasn't sure how to show that off with so many trees around them. She was a little envious of how easily the wild cats could navigate them.
"You said you wanted me to show off. I'm not great with climbing, but I can run pretty fast and I'm okay in a fight I think?" She lifted her paw, narrowly avoiding tripping over a rock that she almost hadn't spotted in time. "Err... when the ground is flatter, that is. The terrain at home isn't anywhere near as uh, uneven? I can jump pretty high too, but climbing a tree like these might be a tall ask. Not entirely sure I'm built for that one. Pretty sure my claws might get stuck in the bark, so I haven't really tried before." Spiderpaw lifted one leg, flexing her claws to demonstrate their surprising length. She wasn't really sure why they were so much longer than others', but it made climbing a little uncomfortable at home. Not that she was opposed to trying to learn how to better climb here.

"Sprinting is a bit of a challenge given our territory. It's not exactly open and flat like Windclan's. Climbing is different, but you'll learn in time. You aren't the first outsider to join us." She mewed, watching as the apprentice lifted a paw. Her claws were large, but she didn't think it would matter. At least, not if her own claws didn't get stuck. "Your claws won't get stuck, trust me." She filed the rest of what Spiderpaw had told her away for later. Her mind had focused on climbing, it seemed. "Come over here." Wolfstar led her to the base of a tree that had a few lower-hanging branches. "We can jump into lower hanging branches and across branches, but knowing how to actually climb is important. Can't do one without knowing the other first."
The leader rose onto her hind legs, sinking her claws into the tree bark, and pulled herself upward. "There's a reason we have strong back legs. That's what helps us leap forward, or climb upward. It feels different than walking, and some newer apprentices can get spooked once they realize they're not on solid ground. My advice is to just... Move forward. Know where your paws are, know how to recognize rotted bark that will crumble - this tree is fine, by the way." She talked as she climbed up to one of the low hanging branches, moving from the tree trunk to sit.
"Give it a shot. We'll take it slow, see if you can get to this first branch."

Spiderpaw watched Wolfstar climb effortlessly up into a tree for the second time today. She had to admit it was pretty cool to see her glide up the bark, but she still wasn't entirely convinced her claws wouldn't get stuck. Even so, it couldn't hurt to try... right? What's the worst that could happen? She looked up at the tree, realizing exactly how tall some of them were. The thought of a misplaced paw sending her plummeting to the ground flickered through her mind. She grimaced at the mental image.
Probably that.
"How do you guys not get all wigged out by the thought of how high up you are? I don't know if I have enough feathers to be hopping around in trees quite like that."

"Wigged... Out...?" Wolfstar blinked in confusion at the strange phrase, but at least Spiderpaw's words were enough to grasp her meaning. "We just... Try not to fall. Or look down." She joked, "But in all seriousness, that's why we start simple and work our way up, figuratively and literally. Regularly being up here helps build strength and a sense of balance which helps a lot. Being aware of where your paws are headed in relation to your surroundings, too. I know a few cats who could move through the trees like a Windclanner can run the moors..." Cousin Dawnfeather and her old mentor, both gone for longer than Wolfstar wanted to realize. "The only way to get used to being up in the trees is to practice, like anything else."
