Rookflight would have ultimately preferred remaining in camp, where they could shelter in the darkness of their den, but this patrol was not one they could honestly complain about. It brought them close to the river, where the faint mist could spray onto their whiskers and provide a sense of cooling. They could, if they wished to forfeit the hunt for fish, choose to take a dip in the current as well. These things kept them from withering too much under the heat as they led their patrol out along the banks. Once they reached a suitable spot, they turned to the two cats with them and said, ”You two are welcome to hunt whatever you like. I will be fishing.” They turned more directly toward their apprentice and said, ”Oleanderpaw, please remain in my sight whether you choose to fish or attempt land hunting. I would like to keep an eye on how you are doing.”

With that, Rookflight moved to settle down at the riverside. It was not long before flashes of silver appeared beneath the ripples. He tensed but remained patient as they skated by. Then, when the moment was right… he struck out. With ease, he hauled a sizeable trout from the water and nipped its neck before burying it a little further up the bank.
