With the heat in the day nearing it's peak temperatures, the nights were beginning to feel warmer as well. The sky was full of wispy, rainless clouds thinner than a moth wing. They seemed to fade into nothingness against the brightness of the half moon in the sky. The stars easily pierced through their thin veils, awaiting the medicine cats to gather at Highstones.

Sleepycloud left much earlier than usual if her leg had healed. It wasn't, unfortunately. And while she didn't think it would be perfectly healed...well, ever, it certainly had progressed nicely the past moon. It was primarily thanks to StarClan's guidance at each meeting.
With the realization of an early arrival, the ThunderClanner lay down, resting her leg, which ached with use. One day, she would be running again.

nightpaw
Each heartbeat brought Nightpaw closer to the Moonstone. He was beginning to learn the route like the back of his paw. The amount of times he'd made the journey to Highstones and back in such a short time was frankly ridiculous. Each day seemed to bring a different reason for him to visit - and here, he'd been worried about never getting to see the glittering cavern again when he'd been for his Moonstone journey.
He'd be lying if he said he wasn't nervous about the meeting. The prospect of standing before all of the other medicine cats - cats who'd held the position for much, much longer than he had, he imagined, cats who would likely laugh and jeer at how little he knew - was terrifying. There was the looming thought, too, that he was to blame for Heatherberry's disappearance, and that they'd all come forward and accuse him of it, somehow. If only the she-cat had still been here like she was supposed to be. She could introduce him to her longtime friends, and something in her tone would dare them to speak poorly of him, and everything would be fine. They would've accepted him as one of their own.
But now he was something nobody wanted. He'd been learning just fine; between Rookfire and the random visits from StarClan cats, he'd been managing the daily cuts and scrapes of ShadowClan rather well. Inside his own territory, his footing was slowly becoming more sure, more confident. This, though? This was a new obstacle. He'd never so much as made eye contact with a cat from another Clan, much less spoken to one. What if they ate him alive?
Nightpaw ducked into the cavern and glanced around nervously. In his anxiousness, he'd arrived early. Well, that was something - they at least wouldn't have a reason to be annoyed with him. Yet. There was one other cat here, and she smelled of oak tree and squirrel. ThunderClan? Hm. He didn't meet her gaze, instead sitting off to the side and pretending to be very interested in an oddly-shaped pebble.
Hemlockfox made his way to the Moonstone for what would likely be another dull meeting, his blue eyes distant as he walked the familiar, well-worn path from WindClan's camp to Highstones. StarClan would have news to share, most likely, but he hardly had the room in his skull for more revelations or world-shattering truths. It was still hard to wake up every morning in WindClan, knowing that everything he'd once fought so hard to protect back home was falling apart in his absence. And yet, he couldn't leave. StarClan and WindClan would never allow it. Perhaps it was StarClan's will - for everyone to die or leave him far too soon.
Or, rather, for him to leave them too soon. There were those he got along with in WindClan. Well enough, anyway, but it wasn't the same. He didn't think it ever could be. And even if he did return to SkyClan...what would be waiting for him there? With his parents dead, his loved ones all dead or missing, and Bubblebeam leaving for ShadowClan, it would be like a consolation prize. One he wasn't sure he even wanted anymore. Wolfstar was there still, as was Ploverwing and Sorrelmist and truthfully, that alone should be enough, but it wasn't.
Why and how he'd grown fond of the moor was another situation entirely, but he supposed it was better than being stuck somewhere he'd have never grown to love. RiverClan, for one, would be a horrendous place to live. With that small comfort held in his mind, Hemlockfox squeezed his way into the cavern, the scents of other cats strong in the enclosed space. He wasn't the first to arrive, but that was fine. He wasn't last either. "Evening." He grunted with a curt nod. Sleepycloud was here - so she must be hanging on in ThunderClan - but as Hemlockfox's gaze turned to the stranger huddled at the edge of the cavern, he scoffed.
"And who are you? Another new apprentice, I assume?" Though, from the scent of him, he was ShadowClan, not ThunderClan. Why wasn't Heatherberry guiding this new apprentice of hers tonight? He'd not seen her at the last gathering and had, honestly, been far too preoccupiued with his discussion with Bubblebeam to listen to whatever Leopardstar had said, but hopefully the other medicine cat was merely sick. "Is Heatherberry coming, at least?" He growled impatiently. "I can only tolerate so many mousebrains at once." The words came out harsher than he'd planned, but oh well. The apprentice would get over it eventually.

PIGEONPOUNCE
Life gives you lemons...
Pigeonpounce arrived to the height of Highstones just in time to catch Hemlockfox snapping. All her perennial concerns fizzled out of her thoughts to be replaced by mild confusion instead. Well--WindClan’s medicine cat wasn’t the most sociable tom, she’d learned, but what had he found to bark at already? Pigeonpounce’s eyes slid to follow his gaze, and found… a small tom she did not recognize. He smelled like ShadowClan, though, and he stood alone. She wondered if Heatherberry really was coming, or if, like her and Sleepycloud, this mystery apprentice had been left alone. Pigeonpounce’s ears fell back in sympathy.
”Hey!” Pigeonpounce chirped from behind the WindClanner. She trotted over to stand in-between him and ShadowClan’s new apprentice, and she held herself quite big--though that was still rather small, standing next to Hemlockfox. ”Y’don’t gotta be rude. Maybe us mousebrains don’t wanna tolerate yer attitude.” Pigeonpounce sniffed and then pointedly turned around to face the ShadowClan tom. ”Heya,” she said with a friendly swish of her tail. ”M’name’s Pigeonpounce. I’m, uh-- ‘M RiverClan’s med’cine cat ‘pprentice.” It still felt strange to say. And saying it brought the tingle of nerves back into her paws, too. She flicked her ears and smiled it away. ”We should be friends! Oh, but, uh-” She looked around, wondering if Thymelight was going to arrive soon. ”We should, uh… prob’ly worry ‘bout gettin’ inside soon. ‘Fore it gets too late.” She didn’t want to leave SkyClan’s medicine cat behind… but they had to go.
Pigeonpounce flicked her tail and made her way into the darkness of Mothermouth. The paw-shaped grooves left by countless cats before her helped guide her until light spilled forth from a cavern up ahead. Once she could see again, she turned to look at the other medicine cats--especially the one from ShadowClan--before bowing her head in a nod. ”Well, g’night, I guess.” She said as she moved closer to the Moonstone and settled down beside it. ”Hope y’all have good dreams. Nothin’ big.” Pigeonpounce’s jaws parted in a yawn, then she pressed her nose to the stone and let herself be tugged to sleep.
The words hardly left Hemlockfox's mouth before that softhearted RiverClanner, Pigeonpounce, piped in in the ShadowClan apprentice's defense. His tail lashed once as she slotted herself between them, her ears pinned back defensively. With a massive roll of his eyes, the seal point tom turned away, his expression sour. It took every shred of self-control not to snap at the she-cat, but he managed. "Attitude." He scoffed. "I didn't say anything that wasn't true." And, honestly, he hadn't intended any harm. There was just absolutely no point in mincing his words for the comfort of a lowly apprentice. One who, likely, had no clue what was even happening.
He sulked for a moment longer as the other medicine cats mingled and chatted amongst themselves and, truthfully, had half a mind to leave them and get on with it already. However, Pigeonpounce beat him to it and, with a friendly flick of her tail for the ShadowClan cat to follow her, vanished into Mothermouth. Feeling a bit chafed that she'd ducked ahead of him, the tom shouldered his way into the tunnel after her, his eyes narrowed. Thymelight wasn't here and, honestly, he doubted she'd make it in time now. They'd waited long enough as is.
Pigeonpounce and the young apprentice seemed chummy enough and Hemlockfox, for one, wasn't eager to butt in on their budding friendship. Such relationships would only come back the bite them someday, he was sure. Be it because of war or famine, it would happen. So, with a heavy grunt, he settled on the far side of the Moonstone and tucked his paws beneath his chest. Right. Nothing big. That'd really be the day. Still, the idea of a calm evening was soothing enough and Hemlockfox pressed his nose to the icy stone and allowed sleep to take him.

nightpaw
Nightpaw startled as an unfamiliar, gruff voice addressed him. His head shot up, ears subconsciously pinning back as his eyes widened. Another new apprentice? What had the tom meant by that? He'd assumed anyone at this meeting had been a medicine cat for moons, even seasons, just like Heatherberry had; but perhaps there were others like him.
He hesitated. There was a venom in the tom's voice he wasn't used to. The growl that rumbled in the tom's chest gave him pause. What had he done to deserve that? And how did he tell the tom that Heatherberry was not, in fact, coming? How did he explain it without this cat putting all the blame on him?
Nightpaw's anxiety turned to harsh disappointment as he hesitated a beat too long. Another cat jumped in to defend him before he could speak. He'd waited too long. Too long to tell of Heatherberry's disappearance. It was both a blessing and a curse; when they found out, would they think him a liar? But he was going to say something, really. He flexed his claws against the stone beneath his paws. Was he destined to be some meek, sniveling little kit all his life? Did he really need strangers to defend him?
He lashed his tail, but the irritation in his gaze faded away as the molly addressed him. She seemed sweet enough. And she smelled of the river. Suddenly, he felt bad for being annoyed with her. He should begrateful she'd come to his aid at all. His features twisted into a nervous smile to match her grin. She was so upbeat and friendly, and here he'd been, expecting everyone to act like the strange, rough tom that had first called out to him. "Nice to meet you, Pigeonpounce." He wondered if she was another warrior-turned-medicine apprentice, just like him. Why else would she already have her full name? It was a funny one, too, but oddly very fitting. "I'm Nightpaw. I'm ShadowClan's medicine cat apprentice. Brand new, actually." His paws trembled a bit. It felt weird to say aloud. Had he said it aloud before? Anxiety gripped him still like claws in his chest. Friends? Was he allowed to make friends outside of ShadowClan? But he found that he did want to know her. "Yeah... yeah, I'd like that." If I even deserve someone like you as a friend.
Nightpaw paused a moment, then hurried ahead into the cavern. As Pigeonpounce bid them all sweet dreams, he settled down beside the stone as the others had done. Nothing big. She... was right, too. He dreamed of nothing all night. It was the first night in many, really, that hewas able to sleep in peace, unplagued by any StarClan visitors or nightmares.
