He could not have asked for a better first hunting trip with his apprentice the other day, and now that she had caught her first kill and proven to herself that she could do it, Eaglefly wanted to take her for practice sparring lessons next. He very much so wanted to teach her how to defend herself and he thought about what was ahead of him.
In the past, he had worked with Cloudy his former apprentice and had worked to teach her how to fight with a unique style with her one clouded eye. As he thought about which kind of fighting style might work best for Sunpaw he figured perhaps an explosive style that would rely on speed and energy - it seemed to match her perhaps.
So maybe he could teach her moves such as tail yank or belly rake they both required finesse and lots of practice, and he saw earlier how driven she was to catch the rabbit - he hoped that same desire to excel would carry over to here.
"Alright Sunpaw we got a lot to do today" he meowed much more confident in himself this time around. Now that the initial nerves of a new apprentice were settling in he could be a bit more of himself.
And part of who he was once he got to know a clanmate more was a little bit of a prankster sometimes. Sure, he was usually wise, caring and compassionate especially to his apprentices but he always had a bit of a knack for little harmless pranks he would pull on his clanmates. Perhaps today he would play one on sunpaw he wondered.
"Today we are learning spar training" he announced.
"ope... erm.. sunpaw? did you forget to groom your pelt after your rabbit meal?" he meowed looking intently at his apprentice.
"You got something right on your chest" he meowed convincingly and as his apprentice glanced downwards he gently flicked his tail up her chest and gave her nose a gentle boop with the tip of his tail.
He could hardly contain his laughter at the kit level humor he just pulled off.
"ok ok - come on" he mewed after eventually stop laughing from it.
---
He lead her to a soft grassy field, one where it was out of the way of camp and would be a good open place for them to train.
hmm okay so the very basics of fighting is to use your claws and teeth agains the enemy while keeping your belly and throat protected. For now, just try swiping at the air with a front paw while you balance on your other three paws" he demonstrated a basic front paw swipe and turned to look at her.
"Over time you will start to find your own style of fighting, you will figure out how to make certain moves work best for you."
"Once you have the basics down I want to show you some more advanced moves that I think you will like, but part of it is figuring out what does and does not work for you"

Sunpaw had been restless since her first training session. She wanted to learn everything now, now, now. But Eaglefly didn't seem to be on the same relentless schedule as her, and she'd had to wait until the next day to start her battle training. By then, she was raring to go, her paws itching to move. So when he finally came to get her for training, she had already finished breakfast, the pile of rabbit bones from her meal sitting beside her in a neat pile.
"Eaglefly! I thought you'd never come get me." Her pale green gaze gleamed with excitement as she scrambled to her paws and stood beside him. She was a bit small - more compact and muscular than lanky and lightweight, like most of WindClan - and she barely came up to his shoulder. Still, she nudged him affectionately and awaited their departure eagerly.
But something was... off. He frowned, then glanced down at her chest. Her pulse quickened. She had something in her fur?! That wouldn't do! She wasn't scared of getting her paws dirty, but she couldn't look ridiculous. Only a kit would walk around with rabbit fluff in their fur! Panic flashed in Sunpaw's gaze before she looked down - only to be flicked right in the nose as she did so.
Sunpaw looked back up at Eaglefly, momentarily unamused. He'd booped her! Her jaw fell, but as her mentor burst into laughter, she couldn't help but break into a dumbfounded grin. After a beat, she returned his laughter, shaking her head in disbelief. "You booped me! I can't believe it!" Who knew her mentor was a dork?
She followed along as he padded out of camp, casting occasional glances toward him to make sure he wouldn't try anything else. "I'll get you back, y'know. When you're least expecting it, probably!" She tapped him with her tail, then settled down as they reached the open field.
The basics. Well, every cat had to start somewhere, and it was better than nothing. "Got it. Kinda like, since I'm smaller, I'll have to be trickier than a cat who's stronger than me?" The apprentice asked keenly, cocking her head to one side. When she was younger, she might've hated her size, but she'd learned to live with it. There was strength in being quick and quiet. Sunpaw followed his lead as he demonstrated a basic swipe, jabbing her paw at the air and keeping her weight balanced evenly on her other three legs. She imagined a fierce enemy warrior before her as she brought her paw back, then lashed out again, clawing at the air with force. "Like that?"

His heart squeezed as she nuzzled at his shoulder, her smaller frame barely could reach it but she was very ready to go. He blinked frozen for a moment, was this it? Did he do things right again and have an apprentice that cared for him again.
Cloudy his former apprentice, was gone and that would always sting but when sunpaw gave him even a simple of a thing as her nudging him affectionate in her greeting his feelings swirled that he had acheived what he wanted, another apprentice bond that they cared foreach other in the way mentors and apprentices have.
He vowed silently to himself not to let her get hurt like Cloudy had.
Eaglefly grinned at her shocked expression and as he led her out her comment about getting him back made him flick his tail so happily.
"I am sure you will, and I look forward to that day" he mused happily.
He was the clan prankster and having one pulled on him interested him greatly.
He watched carefully her swiping and nodded thinking about her question.
"yeah, you got the idea of it, you are smaller but quicker. So when we practice in a few moments try and use your speed and focus on dodging my attacks - you have to be quick and wear your opponent down. Try and avoid going for putting too much energy in one hit."
He swiped quickly showing her the special windclan move (the one that lets you attack twice)
"see? small flowing attacks" he meowed as he demonstarted the moves on the empty air before him.
"You are like a dagger, you swipe quickly and fast, you dont have to play to be a big sword. You dart in fast and just wear your opponent out yes?"
(OOC I realize cats don't know what daggers and swords are ... but the line just sounded cool idk XD)
He stood opposing her facing her and nodded,
"alright come on lets see what you got then, practice attacking me. No claws but fight like it is real otherwise.
He began slowly circling her to see what she would do.
"Pretend I am a fox and I have found my way to the camp. You are the last line of defense to the nursery where the kits are hiding. Don't let me past you"
He flicked his tail to the big rock that was behind her. "That's the nursery - If I get there I win"

Small flowing attacks. Sunpaw tried her best to commit everything to memory. Her littermates had never been the play-fighting type, so she didn't have too much experience... Moonpaw wasn't usually up for anything high energy. She was surprised, too, at how quickly Eaglefly moved. Within milliseconds, he'd lashed out twice. She took note of that move. WindClan was quick; it was best to lean into that.
She listened to his proposition intently. She could defend the nursery. She could defend the nursery so hard. Her pulse quickened as Eaglefly began to circle her. She wasn't afraid of him hurting her - far from it, really. She trusted him with every fiber of her being. But that desire to prove herself was there again. Sunpaw was determined to be the best. She refused to let herself down.
Sunpaw moved on instinct. As he neared, she felt herself slide naturally into a defensive crouch. "Back off, foxbreath!" Came her playful hiss, and though she was determined to fight as she would in a real life-or-death situation, her whiskers twitched in amusement. Training could still be fun, couldn't it?
The big rock was only a few foxlengths away, but Sunpaw knew she would have plenty of time to wear out her imaginary enemy before then. Well - she hoped, rather. The small she-cat took a deep breath and steeled herself to attack. Then she bounded forward. Swiftly, she jabbed at Eaglefly's shoulder, then used her other paw to 'claw' his nose. Her claws stayed sheathed the whole time, even though they did itch for action. No. She'd never hurt one of her Clanmates like that. Not one of her own kin, at least.
Sunpaw used Claw, dealing 6 damage and costing 5 EP!
Sunpaw 20 / 20 HP 55 / 60 EP (-5 EP)
Eaglefly 54 / 60 HP (-6 HP) 170 / 170 EP

Eaglefly was impresed by her standing her ground and even taking the iniative and charging at him, this could be good in a real fight to push the fox back. Not only was she holding the fox off she was wanting to drive it away.
He smiled to himself inwardly but for the sake of realism in the simulated training senecio he hissed back at her.
He was well aware she knew this was all just pretend and the more real he could make it, the more resolve she might have in a real fight. He was prepping her for real threats in the real world and took that job very seriously, he would not lose her, not like cloudy and he would train and drill her till he was certain she could take on not only a fox but a badger too!
He hissed and nipped back at her. He knew fox hunting, they used their teeth much more than claws, so he would mimic that as such here, he wanted to see her be prepared for all the things.
While she strove to be the best, he had a similar but slightly altered striving he wanted, he wanted her to be able to defend herself and take care of herself, he cared deeply for her and would make training rigorous as such.
He spun and nipped at her scruff trying to test what she would do if a fox got behind at her neck.
He was very careful but nipped hard enough that it would be felt in a training sparring fashion.
Eaglefly uses Bite for 6 dmg
(im lowering the damage to keep it realistic that he is not biting at full force since he is being carful not to hurt her, the description for bite in the battle system says it punctures flesh which is not what he would do here)
Sunpaw 14 / 20 HP (-6) 55 / 60 EP
Eaglefly 54 / 60 HP 165 / 170 EP (-5)

When Sunpaw wanted, she could be quite clever. That was why she noticed the way Eaglefly almost only used his teeth to 'attack' her. She had no idea, of course, that it was because that was the way foxes moved - she was just trying to gauge the best way to defend herself from him. As he hissed, she hissed back, then fluffed out her coat and tried to make herself look as big as possible. Intimidation was half the battle, was it not? Well, not that she'd really been in any battles, but she had seen her Clanmates spar.
As the pair continued their simulation, Sunpaw's heart began to race with the thrill. If she wanted to, she could imagine Eaglefly as a real fox pretty easily. His movements made her think of a real predator. As he turned and nipped at her scruff, she twisted around on instinct and batted at him, then darted between his legs to get free. There was a dull pain where he'd bit at her, but it didn't really hurt. It only served to encourage her. That fox would get to those kits over her dead body. Sunpaw wouldn't allow it.
If I can keep away from his teeth, this should be a walk through the flower fields. She smirked as an idea came to her. The black and gold molly moved as a blur as she darted underneath his legs again - this time, in an attempt to trip him. If the fox was going to be unpredictable, so was she. It seemed to follow Eaglefly's advice, anyway! Be quick and wear your opponent down. If she moved fast enough, Eaglefly wouldn't know what hit him!
When he stumbled and fell, Sunpaw set her plan into motion. It was perfect! "Looks like you've got something right... here..." Sunpaw frowned, looking down at his chest fluff. When he turned to look, she booped his nose gently, then danced away with a grin. "Ha! I gotcha back! I gotcha back so good!"
Sunpaw used Boop! It's supereffective! Sunpaw used Trip, dealing 5 damage and costing 15 EP! Eaglefly is stunned for 1 turn!
Sunpaw 14 / 20 HP 40 / 60 EP (-15 EP)
Eaglefly (stunned) 49 / 60 HP (-5 HP) 165 / 170 EP
