The night was always his favorite time. Fittingly, since he was a Shadowclan cat, but he cared for it beyond the extra cover darkness gave them. It was so peaceful, the birds quiet and the frogs and crickets taking over their singing. Even with the rest of the patrol close by, it felt like he was alone, the privacy soothing... as long as he didn't stray too far away from the group. There was safety in numbers after all and he didn't want to be stranded if something unsavory were to find him.

He inhaled the crisp air, filling his lungs and taking in the scents of prey around him. Mice, frogs... lizards. He had a bit of a bias for those. He found them quite cute... and also quite delicious. Thankfully, they'd be quite sluggish during the night with no sun to bask in, easy prey for a hungry Shadowclan cat. He followed the scent, amber eyes scanning the rocks and rotting logs for where his target might be hiding the night away.

Only... he couldn't quite find one... Hmm. He checked the usual places, under basking spots and sniffing around the underbrush. He could smell them, but he couldn't find any. They must have been really small and really stealthy. Shame, he was really looking forward to catching one, but newleaf brought plenty of prey. He could find something else.

With no lizards available, he went for the next best thing. Frogs. Equally as cute with their weird, bulbous eyes. Equally as tasty with their tender meat. His tufted ears flicked, pinpointing the soft croaks. As pleasant as they were to just rest and listen to, their song was a perfect indicator of where his target lurked.

He crept through the underbrush, the tall pines surrounding him casting him in long shadows. He came across a small stream, frogs singing near its edges. He crouched low, pupils wide to take in as much of the low light as possible. The amphibians seemed unaware of his presence at the moment, preoccupied with... whatever frogs do.

Thick muscles tensed unto the tom's coat, then he sprang. The frog's soft body was easily scooped up in his jaws before it could react, the rest of its companions fleeing into the water. A quick bite dispatched it, his prize hanging limply from his jaws.

Burying his catch, he set his sights on something more mammalian. Just one more thing before he reconvened with the rest of the patrol. A deep inhale brought the scents of prey over his palate, mice somewhere near.

Leaving his frog behind safely hidden within the earth, Boartusk stalked to find a new target. A small brown mouse nibbled on a seed, munching away and unaware of the large cat sneaking up behind it. Careful steps brought Boartusk closer to his prey, each step precise and quiet. Wait... no, that was much too big to be a mouse. He paused, taking a small step back to reassess. Definitely a rat, definitely not a mouse.

Well... it was still prey, if a bit more dangerous than usual. He pounced, catching the rat by surprise as his teeth bit into its back to try and end it quickly, but its thick hide prevented this from being a quick fight. It let out a furious hissing growl, its strange paws flailing as it twisted to try and strike back. Its hind legs managed to scrape at his muzzle, the tom's nose wrinkling.

Stars above, he did not want to do this tonight. Dropping his catch, he used a large paw to cuff it across the face, knocking it off balance and onto its side. It seemed he used enough force to stun it, something he was going to take advantage of.

The dark tabby went in for another bite, sinking his teeth into its neck. Somehow, possibly through the power of hatred alone, the rat refused to back down. It bit into his lip, its teeth breaking the delicate skin there and holding on.
