Spiderdance might have been more excited than his own apprentice was. He had given Cloudpaw a tour of the territory and gone over all the boring safety stuff, but now he could teach her all the fun things! He decided on hunting first, partially because it was his favorite task and partially because hunting skills could be translated into fighting skills. Both required you to be light on your paws and pay attention to your target.
The sun had just peaked over the horizon, bathing the sky in brilliant orange hues as Spiderdance led his apprentice out onto the moor. The wind gently rippled the grasses, the fresh morning air filling his lungs. "Rabbits are a little more active during dawn and dusk. However, they can't see in the dark as well as we can. This means not only are they more plentiful right now, but they're also easier to catch! As long as you're quiet."
The lanky tom crouched low into the tall grasses as a demonstration. "Keep low, but don't drag your belly. Make sure you watch your steps. A rabbit's ears are sensitive, so you need quiet, even steps not to alert them. Also, be aware of the wind in your whiskers. You want to stay downwind or the rabbit will scent you and spook."
He lifted his nose to smell the air, the scent of rabbit reaching his nostrils. "Follow me, I think there are some close. I'll catch one first as an example, then you can give it a try." He flicked his tail, a gesture to follow close behind as they crept toward their target. He kept a close eye on her form, offering small tips before falling silent as their prey came into view. A rabbit nibbled away at a patch of clover oblivious to the cats so far.
Spiderdance stalked a few steps closer before suddenly launching himself from the tall grasses, his paws outstretched to tackle his prey. His teeth quickly sunk into the back of the rabbit's neck, a quick shake snapping the fragile spine and ending it before it could cry out. He turned his attention back to Cloudpaw with a smile. "Just like that."
Spiderdance attempted to catch a rabbit! He was... successful! -2 EP

Cloudpaw had to make a concentrated effort not to bound ahead, not to bounce on her paws in excitement. Spiderdance had shown her the territory, and now he was instructing her on hunting. She listened intently as her mentor spoke, rabbits were more active during dawn and dusk, their vision was worse in the dark... All good things to know about the creatures most often found on Windclan's fresh kill piles. All things any skilled hunter should know. Which is what she would become, in time. One of Windclan's best hunters. That wouldn't happen without practice, nor without study. Spiderdance was keen to show her how it was done first. She followed his intrustruction, listening as he gave feedback on her form.
"Alright, that makes sense." Cloudpaw kept her voice quiet as she nodded, following Spiderdance, and tried to keep her tail from twitching in excitement. It wouldn't do to accidentally give away their position to the prey they stalked.
Her mentor moved in an explosion of speed, and Cloudpaw watched as he swiftly killed his target and turned back to her. She would do her best to emulate him... Do her best to surpass him, even. "Nice," She breathed out, then turned, green eyes scanning the fields in hopes of finding another. "There's another." The brown-furred creature was easy to spot, and Cloudpaw angled herself toward it, carefully moving forward. Stay downwind... Keep her belly off the ground... Watch the tail... The lithe calico drew closer.
As her mentor had done, once she felt she was close enough the apprentice exploded forward, overtaking the rabbit and bringing it down. The kill was not the cleanest perhaps... But that would change with practice. She had done it, and when Cloudpaw turned back to Spiderdance she was grinning. "I did it!" She purred, words slightly muffled by the rabbit as she trotted back toward Spiderdance.
Cloudpaw has attempted to catch a rabbit for -2 ep. Catch successful!

Spiderdance absolutely beamed as he watched his apprentice take down her first rabbit. On her first try no less! Was he that good? Or maybe she was just a natural. Maybe both!
"Perfect!" he chirped, trotting over and giving an affectionate bonk of his forehead against her shoulder. Ah, he probably should have asked before touching, but he was so thrilled it slipped his mind. "You did great! Just make sure you get a good bite on the back of the neck as soon as possible. One squeak and they'll spook the rest into their warrens, but the most important thing is that their kicks can knock the wind out of you. This is especially true with hares," he warned. It was rare for a Windclan cat to walk into camp injured from a rabbit, but it certainly wasn't unheard of.
"Let's catch a few more. There are plenty of hungry cats back at home." Windclan was overflowing with kits and apprentices, and young growing cats had a healthy appetite. He buried his rabbit alongside Cloudpaw's before they continued their search. They'd feed no one but foxes if they didn't hide their prey.
Lifting his nose to the air, following the scent of more prey. Rabbit was thick in the air, but he could also catch traces of bird nearby. Hmm, there could be another opportunity for some learning.
He followed the trail, his ears flicking as he heard the song of a starling. Spiderdance grinned, crouching low. "Birds don't hear as well as rabbits and hares, but you should be just as careful. If you spook them, you can't chase down a bird like you can a rabbit," he whispered, his bright blue eyes locked on the singing bird. He slowly stalked closer and closer until he leaped forward in an attempt to catch his prey. However, the bird noticed him just as he burst from the grass.
In a frantic flutter of wings and feathers, the starling darted into the sky, leaving Spiderdance with nothing. "Hmm... Exactly why we stick to rabbits." He didn't seem bothered at all by his failed hunt. It happened to everyone.
Spiderdance tried to catch a bird. He was... unsuccessful. -2 EP

"Got it." Cloudpaw chirped, though she was still clearly excited about her first catch being a success. "Hares are bigger, right?" She couldn't fathom prey being able to injure a cat, but if her mentor was warning her, it was advice she would keep in mind. And he was right about keeping her kills quiet, too.
Her mentor went on to explain that Windclan didn't catch birds... And then promptly proved it. Cloudpaw stared at him with surprise for a moment, then turned. "Rabbit it is," She agreed. Spotting one after a few moments of searching, the apprentice made her way toward it. Again, she caught up to the creature quickly, and this time was sure to bite at the throat to keep it from squealing. Satisfied, she turned back toward Spiderdance.
