I once was a man with dignity and grace
The patrol itself was rather uneventful so far. Just a couple warriors, Thistlepaw, and another apprentice. Cloudpaw. She was made an apprentice a little bit after he was, and other than that, he knew nothing about her. Then again, it wasn't like he normally took too much initiative to meet new cats.
Spotting a rabbit, Thistlepaw broke off from the patrol to chase it down. He grabbed hold of the rodent's rump, before delivering a fatal blow. After taking a moment to bury it, he made his way back to the patrol.
The warriors up ahead were having some sort of conversation, not that he cared much to listen, but it did make the silence between the apprentices rather awkward.
Maybe he can at least try saying something.
"Pleasant weather today."
There. Silence filled.
Thistlepaw has caught a rabbit. -2 EP. 38/40 EP
Now I'm slippin' through the cracks of your cold embrace
"Nice catch!" Cloudpaw had watched as the other apprentice on the patrol had raced after a rabbit and killed it with a blow. So many of her clanmates seemed like great hunters... She would catch up with them. Soon.
Starting now, actually. Her gaze turned from Thistlepaw... Only to quickly return back at the sound of his voice. "The weather is just lovely." She agreed sweetly, "It's a perfect day to catch rabbits... Say... We should see who can catch the most!"
Green eyes turned once more, and the short-furred calico found a target without interruption this time. A rabbit among the long grasses seemed unaware of the patrol's presence, but Cloudpaw knew it would not stay that way for long. The apprentice raced toward it and leaped, tackling her prey to the ground and winding up with her fangs at the creature's throat. Triumphantly, she turned back to Thistlepaw.

Cloudpaw seemed to be a generally kind cat, which Thistlepaw couldn't complain about. She seemed to take conversation into stride, as well.
And then she proposed a competition. He couldn't stop his chuckle as he thought about Leopardpaw. His brother would absolutely love to see Thistlepaw put some actual effort into something. Not that he was ever the competitive type. He would probably just be hunting as normal, but if Cloudpaw wanted a competition, he'd let her believe there was one.
"Alright, then. Whoever has the most rabbits by the end of this patrol wins." It was not long after that Cloudpaw managed to catch a decently sized rabbit, and he liked to think that maybe having an opponent she thought she would need to beat aided in her resolve. "Very well done. It seems we are even for now."
Thistlepaw then turned, spotting his own quarry. Chasing the large creature down, Thistlepaw leapt on top of the rabbit, rolling on the ground with it for a bit before finally landing a fatal bite.
He supposed that was two for him, now. Not that he was counting.

"For now." Cloudpaw agreed, a smile curving her lips. She couldn't help the flash of competitiveness that made her eyes narrow as she watched Thistlepaw catch another rabbit. Cloudpaw gave herself a small shake. What was she doing, just watching him hunt? She had wanted a competition, and just watching as her (friendly) opponent caught another rabbit wasn't exactly competitive...
Green eyes found another rabbit quickly, and the apprentice was stalking toward it carefully. In a burst of speed, Cloudpaw caught up to the rabbit and quickly cut off a squeal of alarm, turning back toward Thistlepaw. Even, for now.

Thistlepaw returned the she-cat's smile, watching as she caught yet another rabbit. "Perhaps we should have a goal set for ourselves. Should we say the first cat to catch 5 rabbits is the winner? Otherwise, this competition could last forever. This patrol will have to end at some point, after all."
He figured 5 would be a fair number. Each of them already had 2 rabbits, it shouldn't take too long to catch some more. But it gives enough time for Cloudpaw to pull ahead, should she be able to.
Not that he was simply going to allow that. She wanted a competition, so he would be a challenge.
He totally wasn't being competitive, himself.
Once he spotted another rabbit, he quickly began to pursue the rodent. But as he ran, he could feel a sharp pain in his paw, and he let out a yowl.
A weasel attached itself to his paw, and Thistlepaw cried out in pain. Where had this thing even come from??

"Five each... Carrying all those rabbits back to camp would be a task." Cloudpaw's whiskers twitched, "But it works for a goal. And think how impressed the warriors would be!" And that, of course, was her goal. To impress, to further her skills and become a warrior.
Cloudpaw had turned away to find her third piece of prey when Thistlepaw's yowl turned her attention. Eyes narrowing in displeasure the apprentice turned, ready to scold him for interrupting. Maybe he was trying to distract her... But no. He'd found a long, furry creature that had attached itself to his paw. With teeth.
With a hiss, Cloudpaw darted toward the weasel, raking her claws down the beast's side.
