Wolfpaw was tired. Rigorous training, hunting and patrolling. Up and about with as much of his family as he could, though namely just Hedgepaw now. He needed to get close to Quillsplash, and accompanying her to keep her safe was the best way to do it. His paws plodded into the mouth of camp, slick with mud and mulch from the marsh but it blended in so well with his pelt it was hard to notice. He would clean it later.
He followed the shadowed edge of camp like he always did, debating as to whether to eat something or nap. Neither seemed desirable, but he seemed to want for nothing these days but a certain unfortunate event. His paw landed on something furry, paw or tail? He did not care to check. He huffed, and let out a low hiss of speech; "Move."

Nightpaw wasn't in the mood that day. He didn't know if it was all of the uncertainty lately, or the way he seemed to shrink down when any of his Clanmates met his gaze. They seemed disgusted by him. As if, ever since Heatherberry's vision during his ceremony,it was hard to face the idea of him as their Clan's future. It made his paws itch and his pelt burn. It wasn't a welcome feeling, and sitting around camp waiting for his medicine cat apprentice ceremony was hardly his idea of fun. He was getting impatient and irritable.
So when a paw disturbed him as he was trying to enjoy his frog, his eyes narrowed into slits. Move. Did he seem so meek that even unfamiliar voices thought they could boss him around? Nightpaw's head whipped around toward the voice's source. An apprentice - older, but someone he didn't recognize. He smelled a bit like Hedgepaw and Fernpaw, but that wouldn't spare him from Nightpaw's rare irritation. "You move. I was here first." There was an edge to his voice as he met the tom's sharp gaze, and a low growl rose in his throat.

Wolfpaw paused. He blinked slowly, peering down at the younger apprentice. His face remained still, eyes barely moving as he studied what was in front of him. Then his lip twitched, and he craned his neck down. Level with the tom, the twitch in his lip growing into a vile sneer, and he narrowed dark amber eyes.
"Are you trying to frighten me?" He grumbled, edging closer until there was a mere hairs length between the two. His jaw was clenched, a soft tremble in it with the force of how tight he had it set. "It is not working. I would have left you alone if you moved."
His large paw moved out, claws gripping the edge of the frog Nightpaw was trying to eat, and with a deft movement, flicked it out and away from him. "Do we want to try that again?"

For a moment, Nightpaw's heart was in his throat. His hackles stood on end and his ears pinned back flat against his head. His pupils were swallowed by the blazing green of his eyes as they narrowed into slits. "Do we want to try that again?" Would this cat really dare to hurt a medicine cat apprentice? Sure, he wasn't one officially, stuck in that limbo before his ceremony - but he was sure the tom would face Heatherberry's wrath all the same if he laid a claw on him. For once, he wasn't scared of his own shadow; rather, he was fed up with the fear that held his heart by the same constant refrain.
Then, looking into those angry amber eyes, Nightpaw realized who he was talking to. Wolfpaw. It had to be. They'd shared a mentor, before Heatherberry's vision. He still remembered Silverhawk's remark on his first day of training - the first day he'd ever drawn blood. "You and Wolfpaw are the same, aren't you?" He hadn't known who Wolfpaw was, then. Now...
He almost protested when the tom tossed his frog aside, but it would've been at the risk of sounding weak. Instead, he bit his tongue. If Wolfpaw thought he could intimidate him... well, he was right, but Nightpaw wouldn't let that show. He thought of the way Silverhawk used to speak to him. His gaze darkened. Rising to the challenge, the small tom stood to his full, unimpressive height and closed one of the few inches that stood between him and the other apprentice. "I don't know," he replied, voice harsh and cold as leafbare. "Do we?" Deep down, he knew his voice was carrying a threat he could not uphold.

Wolfpaws head tilted down with a singular flick of an ear. His broad body remained rigid, unmoving bar the slight rise and fall of his chest as the only show of proof that he was alive. His paws itched. Like little ants nipping at the tips of his toes. The toms words drifted past his ears, and he felt a cold stone settling in his chest. Not fear, or nerves. Oh no, anything but.
A smile, all teeth and no charm spread across his face. He leaned down, closing the gap til there was but a whiskers breadth between them. There was a rumbling, like a choked purr coming from his throat as he spoke. "So you do have a bark," He said, a fleeting note of bemusement to his tone that was there and gone again. "But you do not have the bite, do you?" The itch in his paws was like buzzing bees, and the only way he knew to soothe it; to dig his claws into the ground. Feel them pierce something.

As Wolfpaw drew his lips back in a sinister smile, Nightpaw felt his blood turn to ice. He couldn't fight a Clanmate. He wouldn't. Not over something so stupid. What was he doing? He'd taken a vow in front of StarClan to do no harm. He couldn't just break it at the first sign of conflict. Besides, he knew it was a battle he couldn't win.
But the taunt at the tip of the tom's tongue made Nightpaw's chest tighten. He was egging him on, daring him to move, and for a moment Nightpaw almost walked away in spite of it. It wasn't worth the trouble, and Leopardstar would have his fur for doing something so stupid. Still, he could tell Wolfpaw thought he wouldn't actually do anything. Perhaps it was true, as his heartbeat quickened to a rabbit's pace. The small tom bit down on his cheek. He'd just wanted to take a stupid break and eat his stupid frog. And now he was beingtormented, and his pelt burned with the embarrassment of being pushed around.
Finally, he made his decision. He lashed his tail, furious, but kept his voice icy and calm. As much as he could, anyway. "Perhaps you'll find out someday." Nightpaw growled, and he turned tail and stalked away before Wolfpaw could utter another taunting word. He'd finish his frog in peace in the medicine den.
