The days had been long since. Poppyshine had yet to take her name and lives and she felt trepidation crawling up her spine the more she thought of it. The idea of being in charge of the clan, by wellbeing, protection; it frightened her. She had gotten used to giving daily duties fairly quickly. It had become routine after the second day. She was busy, incredibly busy. Most patrols she assigned herself to in turn, if only to avoid the space in camp where the--
"This should be a good spot," Cindersky spoke hastily, tearing the image from her mind as soon as it came. She glanced back at the hunting patrol she was leading. How odd, she still thought, that she was at the front now. Not the back. She wasn't sure what Poppyshine saw in her, in truth. But she would sure do her best to live up to it. She inclined her head toward Swandive. She hadn't spoken much with her since... Well, since she was sick, when they had left the territory. "Pair up with me? Two sets of paws catch more than one."

The clan had a deputy, and it was no longer Poppyshine. It felt... Strange, to Swandive. For as long as she had been alive, Poppyshine had organized patrols and Perchstar had led. They had led as a well-kept unit, seeing the clan through hardships Swandive couldn't have imagined facing without the duo of strong leadership.
And now Perchstar was gone, and Poppyshine would- Not take her place, not replace her, but still, she would lead Riverclan now. With... Cindersky. Who had asked her to partner up for a patrol. Swandive blinked at the other she-cat. Their last encounter had... Not exactly gone smoothly. Much like with Sprucebark, Swandive found herself awkward and unsure. But it wasn't like she could just say no to the new deputy either, right?
"Sure." She nodded, following Cindersky through the territory. It was always nice to have the opportunity to stretch her legs outside of camp, and the mid-newleaf weather was pleasant enough. Far nicer than some of the recent storms had been. And less destructive, but that was a given.
"So, deputy... How's it feel?" Swandive tipped her head curiously in Cindersky's direction. They weren't exactly close with each other, but Poppyshine had chosen her for a reason and Poppyshine was seldom wrong. Swandive would simply need to ignore the awkward feelings left from their last encounter... Or perhaps she was lucky and Cindersky did not remember being lectured while sick.
Once on the territory, the warrior's gaze searched their surroundings diligently. It would be better to focus on the hunt... And keep an eye out for the rogues that had seemed to plague Riverclan. Stars only knew what trouble they would cause if they knew how the clan mourned for their lost leader now. This was a hunting patrol, but it never hurt to be too careful.

Cindersky was poking about a brush when Swandives question came. "Hmm?" She mrrped a second too late, raising her head to the other she-cat. The tension-- Not an angry kind, hesitant, maybe-- was thick. It took her a moment to answer.
"Strange," She said. "It feels so similar to being a warrior... But you know it is not. Everything.. shifts. Changes. Everything looks different." Her ear twitched and her head swivelled, raising her snout to the air. "It's difficult to get used to. But I will..." Her body lowered as her sentence peetered out. She angled herself toward the base of a bush, and one paw after another... Leaped.
She caught whatever it was. Her claws snagged on leathery skin, moist and... Downright nasty to feel. And then a tongue shot out at her, striking her in the nose with enough force to make her yelp and jerk back, a fat green thing disappearing into the bushes.
Cindersky is attempting to catch a frog... Failure.

She could feel the rising awkward hesitance in the air, she thought her claws might be able to cut through it if she tried. But Cindersky gave an honest answer, and Swandive nodded. It must have felt strange to be in her paws, just as it felt strange to witness the hand-off of leadership and the passing of deputyship from one to another.
"I think you will." Swandive wanted to be hopeful. She fell silent as Cindersky focused her attention on something in the foliage - a frog? It was hard to tell from where Swandive stood. She turned her own focus toward finding something to catch, the patrol wasn't just for their awkward chatter, after all.
Movement caught her eye, and the warrior dropped into a crouch. Fish may have been Riverclan's main source of prey, but it never hurt to catch land prey as well. The long trek over the mountains during leafbare had taught her the importance of land prey as well as birds.
No sooner had she taken a few steps, then the distinct rush of air above her head and the screech of an angry bird filled the air. Swandive snarled, frustration building as she was denied the prey she had gone after, and twisted as sharp talons buried themselves in her shoulder. She snapped at the eagle in retaliation, drawing blood and spitting out a mouthful of feathers.
Swandive attempted to catch a bird. Catch unsuccessful and summoned a wild Eagle!
Eagle used Swoop for -15 ep, dealing -9 damage to Swandive. Swandive used Bite for -5 ep, dealing -8 damage. 32 / 40 hp (40 - 8) 110 / 125 ep (125 - 15)

Cinderskys head whirled around at the angry caw, followed by a spit and a flurry of feathers and movement. The scent of blood from both parties filled the air, and for a moment, she was rooted. It was instead like Swandive had a brown pelt, and instead of fury there was fear in her gaze. And no sooner had it come had she swallowed it, biting down on her tongue and flinging herself after the brown-and-white feathered bird before it curved into the air again.
With a spit, her paw swung, claws slicing into the darkened body of the eagle, ripping feathers and flesh with it.

Thankfully, Swandive was not alone in this fight. Cindersky quickly joined her, claws swiping at the angry bird, earning a screech from the creature for their troubles. The bird thrashed, and Swandive let out a hiss of pain as talons raked down her side faster than she could duck away from them. Muscles bunching, she leaped, using her weight to drag the bird to the ground and slashing at it with unsheathed claws.
Eagle used Talon Strike for -10 ep, dealing -7 damage to Swandive. Swandive used Leap and Hold for -15 ep, dealing -7 damage. Eagle is pinned 2 turns.
Eagle 17 / 40 HP (24 - 7) 100 / 125 EP (110 - 10)
Swandive 34 / 50 HP (41 - 7) 110 / 130 EP (125 - 15)

Cindersky did not like the scent of blood coming from Swandive, and yet she was relentless. Quicker than she could blink, the other molly had thrown herself into the air and brought the bird down with her. It flailed and thrashed to be free, but cats were stronger.
"Let me take the hit if it gets back up," She meowed sharply, swinging in beside her to sink her teeth into the joint of the wing. Mostly bone, but she made sure to get muscle.
Cindersky used Bite, using 5 EP and dealing 8 DMG!

A snort left Swandive at the deputy's words. "What, and let someone else get hurt? Are you crazy?" Swandive scoffed, digging her claws furiously into the bird's flesh. "Though I don't think this one will be much of a problem soon." She added with a satisfied smile. Already, the bird's thrashing had grown weak from the two warriors. "Let's finish it quick."
Swandive continued Leap and Hold for -15 ep, dealing -7 damage. Eagle is pinned 1 turn.

Cindersky wasted little time the moment the bird gave an opening. Another thrash and its wing was flat to the floor, its lethargic head turned to peck or grab. She slunk in, teeth tight to its neck and held until the flailing finally stopped. She licked her lips and stepped back, lowering her head to the eagle.
"I do not think I have ever fought one of them before," She said, mostly to herself rather than her company. She shook out her pelt and then turned to Swandive, giving her a quick onceover for wounds. "Perhaps we should return to camp. Those talon marks look nasty. Can you walk alright?"
Cindersky used Bite, using 5 EP and dealing 8 DMG! Eagle is K.O'ed.

The big, obnoxious bird finally kicked it, and Swandive gave it one final rake with her claws. It probably wasn't necessary, but it was deserved for how it had interrupted their patrol. "I envy that... They aren't as bad as weasels, though. Those critters are the worst." She mewed.
"I think so, yeah... But it'll give me an excuse to see how Pidge is settling in." Swandive grinned. It was strange to think of her sister as the clan's new medicine cat... Or medicine cat apprentice, but she was proud of her. Even if she also worried.
