ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
Little could capture Rookflight’s attention through the regrowth of their kithood haze--except the state of their friends. The recent deputy ceremony had done some work to break the stupor before it could grasp them fully. They were conscious of both Cindersky, whose grief was as fierce as theirs and who now had new responsibilities to uphold, and of Willowwisp. Of her, they’d been mindful of from the beginning. The mother she lost was of blood; in a way, Rookflight felt selfish for grieving as intensely as her. But they knew she was grateful just to have them and Sunpool by her side. But another matter concerned them as well. They’d seen her turned away from the celebrations at Cindersky’s ceremony. Upset wasn’t written on her face, but Rookflight knew her well enough to see it. It bothered them.
They asked Cindersky to assign them to a patrol together so they could talk. It was late in the afternoon when Rookflight and Willowwisp set out into the territory. Admittedly, it felt good to get out of camp and stretch their legs some. They’d been spending too much time wallowing as of late. Activity helped to keep the grief at bay. They walked in silence for a good while until Rookflight slowed his steps to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with Willowwisp rather than slightly ahead. He even allowed their shoulders to brush as he settled into step. ”Willowwisp,” he mewed gently, ”how are you feeling about Cindersky? I saw you were not very pleased at the ceremony.” His tail rose to gently tap against Willowwisp’s flank. ”I know things are… difficult right now. What I mean to ask is if you are alright.” Rookflight shook their head and looked away. ”I know that is a sorry question to ask. Few cats are alright right now. I hope you understand my meaning.”

WILLOWWISP
A constant uphill run...
The initial feelings she felt towards Cindersky being named deputy had both cooled and grown in their intensity. She no longer felt the spike of vitriol she had in the moment, but the feelings did not dissipate entirely. They had cooled to a quiet ache in her chest that hurt every time she was left long enough to let her mind wander. She did her best to hide it, especially when she was in Cindersky’s company, but it seemed that Rookflight knew her too well to keep it all hidden for long. Shame briefly washed over her as they walked through the territory, but she kept her expression neutral.
“Cindersky is a—good choice. I am not sure if she was the best choice,” Willowwisp said. It felt like a mean thing to say. It was probably objectively true, there were many warrior more senior than her after all, but it was a sentiment coated in her own envy. She did not want to say her own selfish sentiments aloud. “As for myself I am…I am…managing, I suppose is the best choice of words. It still…hurts…when I think about her.” Her death was so sudden, it was unfair. How could she only have her mother for a year of her life? It was cruel. It was a cruel choice from the stars.

ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
Rookflight’s ears twitched. The sentiment that Cindersky was not the best choice for deputy… perhaps it was true, in a sense. There were many warriors her senior. The statement still left a curious feeling in them, even if it was nearly objective. It was stained with something that made their whiskers twitch, too. Rookflight let her finish speaking before nodding and returning his attention to Willowwisp. ”I know,” he said softly. ”It still hurts me as well. It is… it is unfair. StarClan has been harsh to us lately.” His tail did not quite lash, but it jerked to the side in a display of emotion that was becoming more frequent. Rookflight shook his head and went on, ”But… the pain will ebb with time. We will be there for each other in the meantime.”
When he retracted from her side (though he still remained close enough for their pelts to brush), Rookflight fixed Willowwisp a little more squarely under his gaze. For a few moments, he just looked at her, silently assessing his words before he spoke them. Then he said, ”Why do you think that of Cindersky?” His head tilted slightly to the side. ”You are free to speak your mind with me, Willowwisp. You do not have to spare my or her feelings because we are friends.” His tail brushed her flank again, the touch lingering a little longer this time. ”You do not have to hide yourself from me, either. It is okay to feel… I am not sure the word. But it is okay to feel.”

A constant uphill run...
Willowwisp’s heart jumped in her chest when Rookflight turned the conversation over to the subject of Cindersky. Her pelt felt hot. She could guess given that Rookflight brought it up that he heard what she had said before of the newly-named deputy, and shame seeped into her bloodstream. She had felt ashamed later on, with how upset she had been in the moment, but at the same time she could not quite shed the feelings. When she thought too hard about Cindersky being deputy…it didn’t click in her mind. It felt shameful that she thought that way.
“I…am simply not certain she is the best choice,” Willowwisp repeated quietly. Her tail flicked for a moment behind her and she let out a quiet breath. “I think she is a good warrior and a cat of great character, but she is…soft. Similar to Aunt Poppy. Aunt Poppy and Mother balanced one another out well, but now—I am not sure how capable Aunt Poppy is to be the strong decision maker that a leader needs to be, and I do not think Cindersky will be able to push her to be that decision maker.”
She set her jaw closed with a quiet click of teeth. She still didn’t say the true undercurrent of her feelings; she said nothing of the jealousy that lit her paws aflame. But it still felt like she said too much, and spoke shamefully. Rookflight, as kind as they were, would surely think poorly of her now.

ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
Rookflight listened quietly to Willowwisp while she spoke. They could tell she did not want to release the words, but they were grateful she did anyway. They let out a quiet hum and looked away to spare her the pressure of their oft-unblinking attention, choosing to stare instead at the horizon. Rookflight was quiet for several long moments while they considered their own feelings and how to choose their words. Eventually, they gathered themself and spoke.
”I do not think you are wrong,” they said quietly. ”She is timid and emotional. She is nothing like Perchstar, nor will she be. This is true.” Rookflight’s tail swept slowly side to side, and their gaze lowered to instead watch their paws. ”I was a little concerned when she was named, myself. Leadership is… a stressful position. You saw the toll it took on your mother. I did not want to see her carry the same weight, especially as a cat who is not… built for it.” Rookflight sighed softly. He lifted his head and turned toward Willowwisp again. ”But she is stronger and more sure than she appears. She has settled into the role well. I may not think she was the best choice...” Rookflight bit briefly at their tongue, like the words were blasphemous to say, ”but I believe she will grow to fit the wall. I think she has been hardened, after… everything.
”It is alright to have doubts. It does not reflect poorly on your character. It is natural. And it would do us no good to have a Clan comprised of cats that exclusively agree with their leadership. Dissent can be beneficial in measures.” Rookflight took a steeling breath then pressed daringly, firmly, against Willowwisp’s side. ”I hope you do not feel bad for sharing your thoughts. I am glad that you allowed me to hear them.”

WILLOWWISP
A constant uphill run...
Willowwisp’s muscles were wound tightly like a branch ready to snap in a harsh wind. She paused and looked to Rookflight in surprise when they agreed with her. There were some caveats to their agreement, including some compliments toward Cindersky in the process, but it was still a surprise to hear. Even more so, Rookflight acknowledged her dissatisfaction with a degree of understanding. It was such a surprise that her ears both twitched, trying to hear better as though she had somehow made up the words. Willowwisp had spent her life hiding behind a thick stone wall, keeping her feelings to herself for almost everything. She did not have the passive, understanding exterior of her late sister Mistwalker, nor did she have the kind compassion and outgoing nature of Wrensong. She had terrible, thorny feelings—jealousy and doubt and a desire to know that she and she alone was the best. Things she desperately tried to keep down, for she knew they were unbecoming of her. Her mother would have hated it. But why couldn’t she just be understanding like Rookflight, acknowledging Cindersky’s growth? Why did she have to be told that she was deserving of the position first?
The thoughts left Willowwisp paralyzed for a moment before she blinked and pulled herself back into focus. She gave a slow nod and replied, “She has grown more than she seemed to be when Auntie Poppy called on her. I am sure she will be a fine a deputy.”
But I wanted to prove myself first, she didn’t dare say. Who she would need to prove herself to anymore, she wasn’t sure. Her mother was gone, her sister was gone, and Wrensong’s body had been wrecked by her illness that she would surely never be able to surpass Willowwisp anyway.
Stars. When had these awful thoughts become commonplace?
“I think my mind has just been muddled since my mother’s death,” Willowwisp finally admitted, her voice painfully soft. “I have not felt like myself.”

ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
Rookflight returned a nod to Willowwisp’s, acknowledging her agreement. They could feel the tension wound tight throughout her as they pressed against her, and they wished terribly that there was more they could do to ease the tightness from her muscles. Even though she acquiesced, Rookflight didn’t know if he chose the right words to comfort her. Comfort, being gentle--he had never been good at those things. Rookflight wanted to press, find something better to say until he was certain he’d gotten it right, until they felt Willowwisp’s body relax. But at the same time, they did not want to push the issue and risk making a greater issue out of something that could have been small. So they held their tongue and let Willowwisp sort through herself for a few moments.
They did not need to lean in or swivel their ears to catch her quiet words, close as they were, but Rookflight’s ears turned further toward her regardless. A pensive sadness settled across their expression and Rookflight dropped their eyes. ”Understandably so,” they murmured. ”It is… never easy to lose someone. But you do not need me to tell you that.” Rookflight sighed out a breath before tipping their head, pressing the top of their skull against hers. Their voice was quiet, barely a whisper, when they went on speaking. ”I hope you are being gentle with yourself. If not, you should be.” Rookflight swallowed. They were possessed with the urge to declare that they could be gentle with her, if Willowwisp could not find it in her to be gentle with herself. They squeezed their teeth together briefly to expel the words before continuing. ”Grief is a terrible beast. It is easier to fight with patience than brute force. But...” Rookflight thought he’d banished them, but the earlier words resurfaced. He altered them slightly before allowing them to take breath. ”But you do not have to fight it by yourself. It is okay that you do not feel like yourself. We- I-- I will be here to remind you, when you are ready to remember. And I will be patient in the meantime. I will be beside you whoever you are now. Or later. If- if you want me to be.”

WILLOWWISP
A constant uphill run...
Willowwisp finally turned her gaze back on Rookflight. They truly were ever patient with her. There were many cats that those awful thoughts always swirled in her mind towards; thoughts that they did not deserve the place they had or that she would surpass them with ease if she only tried. Not with Rookflight, though. They were always so understanding and she thought that they deserved a lot of what they had. Of all the cats her mother trained, Rookflight was surely the best.
“I want you at my side,” she reassured him softly. “I am glad that you are here…You and Sunpool both. You have helped me more than I think I can express.” She expelled a soft breath through her nose and leaned towards them in turn to press against them the way they did to her. “My mother had good instincts with you. I think she could tell what a good cat you would grow up to be.”
