The better part of the last two days had been full of rain. Falconkit had little interest in soaking his coat, so he’d spent much of his time inside. And now that the weather finally relented, he was itching to get out of the nursery. It was far too crowded with his siblings and other expectant queens all squeezed into the burrow. He couldn’t twitch his whiskers without jostling someone. When he was sure the latest showers wouldn’t start up again, he wriggled quickly out of the nursery. He could stand the misting against his pelt so long as it didn’t turn into a torrent that threatened to wash him away. Falconkit released a breath, grateful to have the room to do so, then turned to look around camp. Quickly, his eyes caught on Redkit sitting nearby, back turned. A smile broke across Falconkit’s face and he dropped into an unsteady crouch. He crept forward until he was close enough to spring, tackling his sister and triumphantly exclaiming, ”Ha! Gotcha.”
Redkit wasn't always the cleanest kit. The rains had left the camp muddied, and damp, even as they had begun to taper off. She had decided to clean herself of any mud that still clung to her pelt, the repetitive motions boring her. It could've at least been more exciting if the rain had continued, but all that would do is make more mud for her to fall into. It was a viscious cycle. As she began to finish up, her world was turned upside down.
Quite, and extremely, literally.
Caught in the tackle of her wily brother, and now back in the mud she had worked so hard to clean off, all Redkit did was blink for a moment. Just a moment. Then she kicked with her back feet with all the might her lanky form could muster. "I," she huffed, "just cleaned up. Since I'm not clean anymore though, guess I don't have an excuse to go easy on you." A ghost of a smirk appeared before Redkit got to her paws, trying to bring Falconkit down into the mud with her. It was the least she could do. The very least.
The sharp kick from his sister’s paws sent Falconkit stumbling back with a labored oof. Even though his ribs now ached and Redkit’s huffing sounded thoroughly cross, he couldn’t keep a grin off his face. ”Pfft. Like you--” He started to counter, but Redkit was quickly rising to her paws and wrapping around him. Falconkit’s legs gave easily to her leverage and he fell to the ground with a yelp. Mud splashed around both of them and soaked through his pelt. It was surprisingly chilly, and sinking against it sent a shiver through him. ”Alright, that’s it!” He laughed out. Falconkit wrapped his forelegs around Redkit’s neck and rolled her over, tumbling them both through the mud until he was able to come out on top. He held her down, just barely off the edge of a puddle and inching her dangerously closer. ”What’s that about ‘going easy on me?’”
"I'm not clean now, it means I don't care about puddles." Falconkit had her inching closer to a puddle? Well, it didn't matter. Redkit leaned into Falconkit's push, attempting to throw her brother off balance as she rolled them into the puddle. She sputtered slightly as muddy water splashed into her face, hoping it did the same as she squirmed out from his grip. Shaking her pelt, the russet kit snorted. "You look ridiculous right now," Redkit laughed, putting down her guard. If her brother wanted to charge, she'd just go back into the mud. If he also let down his guard, well, he'd just go back into the mud. The lovely cycle. So the molly decided to laugh instead, at least the mud was fun, if not annoying to clean off. Besides, fighting with her brother for any real reason wasn't that fun, it was more like grooming out the mud. Annoying.
