Subject: Lightpaw's Moonstone Journey Sat 27 Apr 2024 - 12:04
Poppyshine
Littlesplash’s death was sudden, but…peaceful. He just fell asleep and never woke up. That didn’t make it sad; on the contrary, it was yet another thing for the clan to mourn. But Poppyshine was grateful, at the very least, that he had died without fear. It was the smallest bit of comfort.
Unfortunately, things still had to continue. Littlesplash had planned to take Lightpaw to the Moonstone before he passed, and so Poppyshine took up that duty. She woke Lightpaw early in the morning and fetched the same herbs she had gotten for a handful of other cats when she had to escort them to the Moonstone. They ate the sour herbs together to suppress their appetite and off they went.
While they walked, Poppyshine’s mind kept wandering. She thought of Littlesplash and how he had died similarly to Sandyshell did; she wondered if they had the same illness. She wondered if that illness still lingered in RiverClan. She pondered on who StarClan would choose to be their next medicine cat now that they lacked one at all…Poppyshine just kept thinking as they walked, leaves crunching under their paws. She was always so talkative but now lacked the ability to speak with Lightpaw while they made their trek.
i see the light that's shinin’ on me; it's been waiting for a long time for me to see;
Lightpaw was quiet as he went about eating his traveling herbs, more quiet than usual. The entire Clan was feeling Littlesplash's absence, and it made his heart hurt to know he never really got a chance to know the medicine cat before he passed. Fate would do as fate would, however, and StarClan must have had some sort of reason for taking Littlesplash away so suddenly.
Lightpaw was also quiet as he and Poppyshine left camp, making the long trek to Highstones. He noticed Poppyshine was uncharacteristically quiet as well, he could only imagine how she was feeling as deputy of the Clan. His heart went out to her as well; Poppyshine was such a valued member of RiverClan, he hated to see her so sad. As the two cats walked, Lightpaw finally built up the courage to speak up, something he had been turning over and over in his mind since their walk began. "Um, Poppyshine...?" he mewed, inching closer to her. "I just wanted to say...i-if you need to talk about things, I'm...happy to listen. I know we're all sad about..." he paused, unable to utter the name of poor Littlesplash, "...um, recent things...But I wanted you to know, since you're so good about doing the same for all of us, that you can talk to me if you need to." Lightpaw blinked, offering her a shy smile before averting his gaze again.
Poppyshine looked at Lightpaw when he spoke up and her expression softened. She brushed her flank lightly against his while they climbed up some higher rocks towards the entrance cave amidst the Highstones. “Thank you, Lightpaw. That is sweet of you to offer, and I really appreciate it.” Poppyshine would never take him up on his offer, though. He was young—soon to be a warrior because he was meeting StarClan tonight, but still young. All of RiverClan had to focus on so much right now, including Lightpaw. Poppyshine didn’t want to put her own worries onto others when it was her duty to remain strong.
They finished the climb up the rocks until they reached a large, dark mouth of a cave. She said to Lightpaw, “I will lead the way. Keep close to me. It gets rather dark inside.”
She headed inside and used her tail to make sure that Lightpaw stuck close. They carefully descended the rocky steps deep into the cave until they came upon the moonstone that glowed in the low moonlight that streamed into the cave. Poppyshine settled down on her haunches and looked to Lightpaw. “Settle here in front of the stone. You will press your nose to it and fall into a slumber where a member of StarClan will be waiting to greet you and offer advice.” She smiled gently. “Don’t be nervous. They are here to help guide you in your journey towards warriorhood.”
