Subject: A Needed Talk [Sunfire] Thu 14 Mar 2024 - 10:23
After her discussion with Honeydew, and learning more of the battle from Thymelight, Wolfstar had... Maybe put off the conversation that she knew needed to happen. It wasn't one she wanted to have at all truthfully, much less with her son. But after his outburst when the battle patrol had returned, she had felt the distance growing between them. His seething fury was thick enough to choke on.
She wouldn't let it choke the life out of her son, no matter how he felt at the moment. He was her son, mistakes or not. She needed to get through that thick, stubborn skull of his, not approach him with venom and vitriol. That simply wouldn't solve anything.
Sunfire at least wasn't a hard cat to find, as grumpy and aloof as he'd been lately, he was still predictable in his schedule. Finding him brooding near the edge of camp, Wolfstar padded forward. "Sunfire, walk with me."
Turning, the newly-named leader led the way from camp, glancing back to make sure the golden tom was following her.
The kits, and Mintglade, were all asleep, but Sunfire had since untangled himself from their criss-crossed, purring bodies, too suffocated by the closeness of the nursery to find any rest there. The kits were large and old enough that any day now, they could be apprenticed... coupled with the fact that neither he nor Mintglade were not small cats, and theor children had inherited that, the den had long since grown crowded with their presence.
Instead, the tom found a spot in the sunshine and stretched out there, head on his paws and ears pricked forward in case anyone came calling. For the first half of his nap he remained uninterrupted, but eventually, a shadow blocked out the sun on his face and the yellow tom cracked open an eye, prepared to tell whoever it was to hiss off and find someone else to do whatever patrol they were doubtlessly going to ask about. He could hardly remember the last time one of his clanmates actually struck up a conversation that didn't involve needing something from him. But the shadow turned out to be Wolfstar, and the retort died before a word could leave his mouth.
She asked him to walk, and the tom gave a single nod of his head before rising and padding after her. Into the forest they went, the tom silently following his mother as they moved out of earshot of the camp. Once they were truly alone, he said, quietly, "I assume it's my company you seek."
"Well, yeah. You are my son, no matter how busy things have been lately." Wolfstar mewed, glancing toward the golden tom. Busy was an understatement, and hardly even scratched the surface of the tension that hung in the air ever since the battle, and she was pretty sure he knew that just as well as she did. "Stars... I haven't even had the chance to really see the kits yet, let alone spend time with anyone beyond ordering others around lately." A bitter snort escaped her.
"How are they, by the way?" She asked, turning to face Sunfire fully, "And you?" Though she was almost afraid to ask... She was reasonably certain that she knew the answer - unhappy with her decisions, angry at the world, still wanting blood spilled.
Stars above, but Wolfstar did not know how to start the conversation that she knew needed to happen... But maybe this would get her there without it feeling like an attack. Maybe.
