"But I know there's a reason I'm alive."
Rookflight T3 Warrior | RiverClan | they/he
Though it was always important for warriors to spar with each other to keep up their skills against more than just apprentices or predators, the request was being made more frequently of them. Semi-structured practices were events coming to be frequently organized by the senior warriors. The bitter taste stuck to the back of his tongue grew sharper the more of these practices Rookflight attended. They were often exhausting, especially for a body so deeply tired as a baseline, and it served only to remind him what the point of these events were. But Rookflight tried to find something good in them; often, the partner he was with. Today, it was Larkspring, and he was deeply grateful for that assignment. The shaken agitation that the combined wolf attack and announcement of war left in him hadn't really faded. Having two apprentices kept him terribly busy, too, as did trying to avoid Cindersky like his life depended on it. Even under the pretense of a spar, it was good just to be with him.
Rookflight pressed against his brother's ribs in imitation of a squeeze as both their paws began to slow. The ground was not fully frozen here, threaded with pockets of half-ice, but otherwise flat and unmarred by any sort of debris: perfect land for rolling around on. Rookflight tipped their chin up slightly, letting Larkspring move a few paces forward to settle before nodding. "I will not go easy on you," they informed him smoothly, spurred by the sudden revelation they'd never wrestled Lark with any merit before. Not a second passed before Rookflight's muscles were bunching, due to make good on their word, and they were throwing themself at Larkspring with paws outstretched.
Rookflight used Jumping Strike, dealing 11 (8+3) damage and costing 7 SP.

Larkspring
Larkspring needed all of the practice in sparring he could get. He worked hard training his apprentices, bu they could not provide him a challenge to sharpen his skills as fellow warriors could. He did not want to bother Murkyriver too much either, for she had things to do than to teach him like he was still an apprentice. A spar with his sibling was the perfect way to continue practicing.
His eyes gleamed briefly and he nodded. “I will not hold back against you either,” Larkspring warned. He hoped he had improved in these past moons, and could show that to Rookflight in this spar.
When Rookflight leapt at him, Larkspring took it, only to immediately roll over and bite down onto Rookflight’s scruff and shake quickly, trying to stun them before they can attack a second time.
Larkspring used Scruff Shake, dealing 8 damage and costing 20 SP. Rookflight is stunned for 1 turn.
Rookflight was pleased to connect with their brother easily, though the pride was quickly diminished by being rolled into the dirt. A huff left them, followed by a quiet hiss when Larkspring's teeth found their scruff. The jerk to their neck made their eyes spin, their jaw clench and tremble. Good move, they thought, but Rookflight said nothing through their rigidly grit teeth.
Larkspring was relieved to see that his shake had an effect on Rookflight. They said nothing to one another, but he could see the Good move, in his sibling’s eyes which made him preen.
Should I play safe or recklessly? he wondered for a second. It wasn’t much of a thought; he wanted to learn to be good at battle. Murkyriver beat him despite her disadvantage because she didn’t hold back. He had to try hard against Rookflight too.
He jumped at his sibling, attempting to use the moment of stun to tumble him over. Unfortunately it only provided Rookflight an opportunity to strike him back when they recovered.
Larkspring was a big dumb and got hurt by Belly Rake <3
Rookflight was still gathering himself when Larkspring came moving in again. As promised, their brother would not hold back for their fight. Rookflight shook off the last of their stun, and at the last moment, dropped their belly low to the ground rather than feinting to the side. Their course of action was inspired his own attempt; so, as Larkspring moved over and by them, they struck out with a forepaw. They aimed for his soft, exposed underbelly, knowing it would wind him to strike there. To their relief, their paw connected and Rookflight was able to bring Larkspring down. They knew he was not stunned, though--he would be on the offensive again soon, and their muscles braced as they readied themself for the assault.
Larkspring was unable to perfect the move but Rookflight had no trouble catching Larkspring off guard and batting his paws against his belly. His eyes shut tightly and his fur poofed along his tail in frustration. Never mind it. Just keep going. How will you get better otherwise? his voice barked in his head.
He didn’t move for a moment still, trying to recover and feel up for moving at all while his mind whirled. In the corner of his eye he saw Rookflight move closer, perhaps to check if he really was alright, and so Larkspring took that opportunity to lash out with a couple quick slaps himself before rolling to his feet.
Larkspring used Play Dead, dealing 10 damage and costing 5 SP.
Larkspring bristled with agitation, and Rookflight's ears folded down in sympathy. This was a spar, and so it really wasn't a place for such feelings if they intended to prepare themselves for future combatants... But when their brother didn't rise immediately from the ground, it was concern that pushed Rookflight's paws forward. The moment they were close enough to assess that he was fine, Rookflight's whiskers twitched with a flicker of prediction. Sure enough, Larkspring came surging up just a second later. They weren't fast enough to dodge his flurry of swift blows. Rookflight reared up in an attempt to escape his swipes, but they found opportunity in the motion and used their opening to batter at the top of Larkspring's head.
Rookflight used Upright Lock, dealing 10 damage and costing 10 SP.
Larkspring was not winning this battle. He knew that from the moment he missed the belly attack against Rookflight and knew it doubly so when Rookflight was successful. Murkyriver did not give up in their spar even when she had seemed to be on her last legs, though…so perhaps Larkspring could still manage. At the very least, he would go until he could no longer.
He swiped at Rookflight and then swiped again, smacking his paws against Rookflight quickly to try and overwhelm them.
Larkspring used Front Paw Strike + Desperate Blows, dealing 13 (8 + 5) damage and costing 14 (7+7) SP.
Despite his imminent loss, Larkspring persisted with the fight. Rookflight was proud of him for that. They folded their ears back and shrank down to avoid too much damage, but they took the repeated blows gratefully. With the last few batterings, Rookflight let their bent legs give fully, collapsing onto their side in the sand. They lay still for several moments, eyes closed and breath held; ust long enough to let Larkspring believe he had won. Then, they suddenly surged up, swinging at him in the same manner Larkspring had used a few moments before.
Rookflight used Play Dead, dealing 10 damage and costing 5 SP. Larkspring is pending KO!
Larkspring did not think that he would win, so when he saw Rookflight land in the sand, his ears lowered but the memory of doing the same thing to Rookflight moments ago stayed in his mind. That was what allowed his muscles to be tight enough to spring away from Rookflight when he attacked at Larkspring. Larkspring tried to react with a swipe of his own. He was barely standing at this point, but he would go until the very end. He owed his sibling that much in this test of skill.
Larkspring used Dodge and Fight...Counterattack successful!
