Scorchlight had decided she would take Troutpaw out to teach him hunting. The territory tour was due for later, since hunting was the number one priority in leaf-bare. It felt that time had flown since her warrior ceremony, but she wasn’t an apprentice anymore. She had stopped at a riverbank and crouched as a demonstration, then looked back to Troutpaw.

"First, there’s the hunting crouch," she said quietly to not scare off prey. "You want to make sure your paws barely make a sound while touching the ground." She scented a water vole scrambling away near the riverbank. Scorchlight hesitated before leaping in. She had failed to catch it, but wasn’t sad at all. It seemed the optimistic side of her still shone. She smiled, waiting for Troutpaw to attempt catching something

Troutpaw followed behind his mentor dutifully... though it really ought to be Perchstar teaching him anything. She was the leader of Riverclan which made her the best at everything by default. Who was this Scorchlight to think they could pass on anything but second rate knowledge? Still, the apprentice paid attention when he was being instructed and copied his mentor to the the exact whisker location. Watching his mentor miss the vole, Troutpaw barely held back an eye roll and a yawn. His suspicions had been correct after all.

"Whoops! Nice try though Scorchlight. I don't imagine prey escapes such stellar warriors like yourself very often." His tone was mostly complimenting, but the subtle snideness was still there. Troutpaw crouched after the vole himself, seeing where it tried to hide only a moment ago. Perhaps he could scare it out and grab it.

Alas, the vole bolted into a pile of leaves and that was the end of that. Troutpaw growled after it, but his eyes met his mentor's and he gave a shrug. "See? Happens to even the best apprentices Scorchlight!" His words were kind but his tone was, again, snide. Well its no wonder I missed when my mentor is so lackluster. This would never have happened with Perchstar. He thought bitterly to himself. "Onto the next attempt, your Superior Prowessness!" He said with an exaggerated flourish of his tail. He already couldn't wait for this day to be over.

Scorchlight simply rolled her eyes, unaffected by the snideness in his voice. She saw a minnow darting in the water and quickly jabbed at it with her unsheathed claws. He watched her apprentice fail to catch a vole but held in a chuckle. "You’ll get it next time Troutpaw," she meowed, smiling, focusing back onto the minnow. Even with such an arrogant apprentice, she was sure Poppyshine gave her Troutpaw for a good reason. Maybe her optimism could balance Troutpaw’s rudeness? She could sense sarcasm in his tone maybe he could become a capable warrior if she tried her hardest. Unfocused she let the minnow get away.

At the failed attempt to catch a minnow, Troutpaw frowned and lashed his tail. He took in a deep breath and exhaled loudly, but he said nothing. He'd teach himself to hunt and fish. He had little doubt that Scorchlight would just keep trying to hunt until they caught something and stars knew how long that would take. The apprentice found that failed attempts on both of their ends put him in a sour mood.

"If you don't mind, Scorchlight, I'd like to focus on learning to battle now. Perhaps today just isn't a good day for hunting and fishing? We can always try again later." He had no idea if that would work or not. Something moved by the water, catching Troutpaw's attention. A frog was slowly making it's way from under a leaf to the water's edge. The apprentice blinked, confused. What a strange creature. Didn't it know the water was colder?

He walked over to it and gave a half-hearted swipe with his claws, hardly motivated to really try at this point.... Yet his claws hooked into the frog's flesh and easily pierced it's skin. Troutpaw blinked in surprise, watching it die on his claws. Once it went still, he looked over at Scorchlight. Was this an edible thing? He waited to see if Scorchlight approved or not.

"Perhaps so," she meowed to Troutpaw. Today wasn’t her lucky day, was it? Or had she just failed to train her apprentice by getting so worked up on everything? Sparring was a better option, wasn’t it? As she was about to pad away towards the clan, she turned around after hearing the paws of a cat landing. She saw a toad in Troutpaw’s jaw. "Good job, Troutpaw!" she meowed, smiling. She hadn’t failed; he had caught something! Even if she didn’t, there was no need to waste energy on a lost cause, was there? But it was about time the two headed back to camp. She flicked her tail, signaling Troutpaw to follow her back to camp as the sun started to dip down into the horizon. "Tomorrow we will start your battle training by sparring," she said. For now, they needed to rest. She felt a surge of pride tingle through her body as the RiverClan camp came into view.
