"We'll head to the creek today, there's always prey about, even in leafbare." Stoneheart mewed as she led Mallowpaw from camp. Since returning to their own territory Stoneheart had been in constant motion, either helping fix up the camp or going on patrols. Mallowpaw's training was coming along well despite the chaos of the long journey home and then the chaos of regrouping.
The air was cold despite Stoneheart's thick fur, and the clouds above promised more snow later in the day. The moonlit creek wound through the trees, bringing with it the soft murmur of water and the scents of prey. Hopefully it would be a good day to hunt... And hopefully the pair of Skyclanners would be the only ones out for prey.
MALLOWPAW ! Mallowpaw hadn't missed a single session with his mentor. He'd gotten quite comfortable with her over the last little while, even now he was trotting close beside her with his tail straight in the air. A smile was plastered across his soft features and excitement was alight in his gaze. Training with Stoneheart was one of his favorite things in the whole world and he wouldn't miss a session for anything.
"The creek!" He mewed excitedly. "Beechfang told us there were tons of good spots to hunt around here. I'm ready for anything!" Mallowpaw trotted ahead of her towards the lip of the creek, watching as cold water rushed over pieces that had frozen over. He looked up to the land across from it, gazing at all the trees surrounding them. "I bet Honeypaw and Brackenpaw caught their big ol' owl in a spot like this. Do you think there's owls here, Stoneheart?"

"Beechfang is right... She probably knows the territory like the back of her paw, she's ancient." Stoneheart mewed. She had never particularly cared for the old she-cat on a personal level, but she was a good warrior and had seemed willing to pass on the knowledge she knew. But she was not the focus of today's patrol, and Stoneheart was pleased by the question Mallowpaw asked.
"There's lots of owls out here. They're mostly active around evening or night, not the day." She mewed, it had been some time since she had fought one. Most of her time at the lake territories had been spent in a sicknest, and she hadn't realized Brackenpaw and Honeypaw had brought an owl back to camp. "I didn't see much of the territory by the lake, but they could've. Really, any wooded area is a safe bet that there will be owls or hawk or other birds." She added.
The fluffy she-cat turned her head, pale green eyes taking in the rocky forest around them. Birdsong could be heard in the trees, the noise pleasant. The last time she had been here before the clans had opted to journey away, the area had been bereft of it or the sound of other prey. It was good to be back, and good that the forest seemed to be healing.
"Alright, let's see what we can find, stay in shouting distance, though." Stoneheart instructed. Turning, she slipped through the trees... And before she had gone more than a couple foxlengths, the distinct rush of air above her head and the rustle of wings had her rearing back, teeth bared and claws extended.
"I guess battle training also works!" She called to Mallowpaw, "Be careful of the talons and beak."
A wild Hawk has appeared! Stoneheart used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -10 damage.
MALLOWPAW ! Mallowpaw had taken the offer to venture off by himself eagerly, starting to trot away with his jaws parted. He'd been straining his ears for prey, but all he heard was Stoneheart's call. Battle training? A hawk. "Great StarClan! We've jinxed it!" He yelped, scampering back to the large she-cat's side in an instant.
He was growing into a fine warrior but even beside Stoneheart he still looked small. Still, he was a fierce cat, and like a little terror, he launched himself at the hawk. "I'll teach you to try to scrap with my mentor, featherbrain!" He taunted the bird, snapping his jaws around the beast's leg despite Stoneheart's warning. He wanted to bring this thing down to the ground and bring it back to camp. He snarled around it's tough flesh and gave a sharp tug before he let go, preparing to jump back.
Mallowpaw uses Snap for -6 damage, costing -7 SP!
Mallowpaw 20 / 20 HP 53 / 60 SP [-7]

Stoneheart could only sigh internally as Mallowpaw went for one of the bird's legs. It wasn't terrible strategy, and would bring the feathered beast to the ground, but it also put him in range of those hideously sharp talons. "Careful." Stoneheart warned her apprentice, slashing at the bird with a powerful forepaw while it struggled, talons flailing. Talons caught tufts of Stoneheart's fur, pulling sharply and drawing blood, and she grimaced. Better her than her apprentice, though.
Hawk used Talon Strike on Stoneheart for -10 sp, dealing -7 damage. Stoneheart used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -10 damage.
MALLOWPAW ! The young apprentice flinched when he caught a glimpse of Stoneheart's injuries. He couldn't imagine how much that had to sting; he'd never been wounded before. He lashed out again, this time heeding his mentor's words to steer clear from the hawk's talons, and struck with as much strength as he could muster, aiming for one of the bird's wings.
Mallowpaw used Front Paw Strike dealing -6 Damage and costing -7 SP!
Mallowpaw 20 / 20 HP 46 / 60 SP [-7] Stoneheart 53 / 60 HP 126 / 140 SP

Mallowpaw had learned to fight well, and Stoneheart was confident that in time he would grow into a powerful Skyclan warrior. A final strike as the hawk struggled weakly beneath their blows was enough to end it, and the fluffy warrior kept a paw on the bird until it had stopped moving completely.
"Well done, Mallowpaw." She turned her attention from the hawk to her apprentice, wincing slightly as the cuts on her shoulder. "Are you alright? Talons get you?" He didn't seem to be injured, and that was a good thing. The cuts to her own shoulder stung a bit... But nothing that Smokepetal wouldn't be able to clean up easily if she had to.
Stoneheart used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -10 damage. Hawk is dead.
MALLOWPAW ! Mallowpaw watched as Stoneheart held down the big bird until it stopped moving. What a powerful cat! He jumped towards it again, batting fiercely at its head. "Featherbrain!" He spat. Quickly he rescinded his paws and straightened up at his mentor's praise and question. He brightened helplessly. "Oh, I'm just fine, Stoneheart! Not a lick of a claw on me."Thank StarClan for that. An image of those nasty talons tearing through her pelt went through his head. "But you? We should take this back to camp so you can get Smokepetal to look at that!" He shuffled closer to the fluffy she-cat, sniffing at her wound. "That looks kinda ouchie, y'know? I hope it wasn't my fault..."

"Good, I'm glad it didn't catch you." She was relieved to have that confirmation of what her eyes had seen but her brain was still unsure of. Ouchie... Indeed, the birds talons were ouchie. The bleeding was already slowing though, so surely the cuts weren't that bad? "It does sting... I'm sure Smokepetal or the others will be able to handle it just fine though. And some of those feathers might be salvageable for nesting material." They would make a nice gift for the nursery perhaps, or their own nests. With a nod, she bent and lifted the hawk, "Let's start heading back."
