Another night had come and gone, with little to speak of. Hedgekit did not like this new territory. She did not feel the same urge to explore that her brothers did; she did not feel safe playing and running in this camp like she had back at home. She still did not understand why they were here. So instead she spent most of her days buried in her mother's side, burrowing in like a stubborn little burr and refusing to surface unless coaxed by Silverhawk or Hawkpaw or Pineblossom herself. She'll get better if I just stay close. If I stay here then nothing bad will happen. The thoughts were perfectly logical. She refused to look away for even a moment, because if she did, then maybe something would happen. The idea, though a distant one to a mind so young, was unthinkably horrific. So Hedgekit remained.
As night turned to day and ShadowClan cats began to bed down for the night, the tiny lump of brown-and-white stirred. She had managed to find some rest, so she was no longer sleepy, but she felt the heaving breaths of her mother's side and her worry awoke once more. Even a kit could tell that the wheeze in Pineblossom's chest meant only ill. Labored breathing was uneven, meaning that the queen was awake. Hedgekit's deep green eyes opened, and she pulled away just barely from her place buried in dark fur. "Mamma," came the quiet voice, "are you okay? Need me to get you anything?"

Pineblossom
Even when she was awake, Pineblossom was in something of a fog. The sickness left her tired, and if she didn’t have something specific to focus on, like training Quillpaw—which, he was Quillsplash now, so that was no longer on her plate—she just stared off into the distance, feeling tired.
Her focus was drawn back to the tiny voice of her daughter, though. She looked at Hedgekit and smiled at her. Her only daughter. She loved her so much, and she hated how she worried her, but it was also sweet how she stuck close to Pineblossom. She was grateful for her and all of her children. She murmured, “No, that’s alright. I’m okay. Just tired.” She leaned over and licked down some of Hedgekit’s mussed fur from her nap. “How about you? Are you doing okay?”
Hedgekit leaned into her mother's rough tongue, welcoming the comforting sensation. Still she remained huddled up close. The words were meant to ease worry and still the dark cloud that hung over camp, but she wasn't dumb. She knew her mamma felt sick still. "I'm okay," she mumbled. She didn't want to move. She didn't want to leave. Deep green eyes looked up at Pineblossom, far wiser than they had any right to be at her age. "I'd feel better if you were better. Can I help make you better? If I became a medicine cat or someth'n, then would I be able to cure you?" Hedgekit's face grew solemn. "...Will you be better soon?"

Pineblossom smiled at her small daughter. Hedgekit had so much heart in her. Those big eyes shining with concern and voice welled with emotion. She hated worrying her daughter, but it was sweet how much she cared about Pineblossom.
“You don’t have to try and become a medicine cat. That’s the stars’ choice anyway…” She reached a paw to smooth down some of Hedgekit’s fur and hold her close. “I know how excited you are to be a warrior. I’ll get better. Burdockroot and Heatherberry are working very hard to find a cure. It will just take time.”
