Tawnyshadow didn't know how to feel about Pineblossom's new litter. On one paw, Pineblossom deserved these little lifes, and Tawnyshadow couldn't be happier for her clanmate. But on the other paw... what if they died? Starved from the famine? Fell ill and passed away, like her precious Sloekit and Moonpaw had? Or taken by foxes, like Dawnbright? Or gone missing, like Sagelight and now Skunkpaw. It wasn't in her place to care for these kits, not when they already had their own loving parents, but she couldn't help but worry.
She had thought about whether to meet them. To play with them, and maybe get to know them. But what would she bring with her except tragedy for these kits? Had her own kits not suffered enough from her mistakes? She shouldn't bring the same misfortune to her clanmate's kits. Tawnyshadow remained at the corner of camp, watching the litter of kits chasing a moth.

Pineblossom watched her kits run around and play and chase bugs in the camp. It was nice to get out of the nursery from time to time now. She walked a lap around the camp to stretch out her legs. She was unused to lying still in the nursery. Remaining curled up in there with her kits was nice, but it left her body feeling stiff.
As she made her lap, she slowed down when she spotted Tawnyshadow. They had spoken with one another on occasion and she saw how Tawnyshadow watched her kits. Pineblossom was aware of the amount of loss Tawnyshadow had endured, and she wondered what was on her fellow clanmate’s mind.
Pineblossom approached and greeted her. “Hello, Tawnyshadow. How are you doing today?”

Tawnyshadow was snapped out of her thoughts by the familiar and yet unfamilair voice of Pineblossom. She had not expected the queen to approach her, and felt embarrassment surge through her at having been caught in such a fragile moment. She stoned her face, bringing back the wall she had so carefully construct since she was a kit to deal with the world outside of her heart. It was once impenetrable, a mask she could always hide behind. But now she felt venerable behind it, like it was going to be blown away at the slightest tug of wind. "I'm fine, thanks for asking," She replied, managing to keep a smile on her face.

It was fast and slight, but Pineblossom thought she saw a guard go up on Tawnyshadow’s expression. Her smile seemed honest enough, but Pineblossom had had her own share of guarded interactions in the past. She let it go for now and just settled at her clanmate’s side. She meowed, “I hope you have not been getting worked too hard. Hopefully I’ll be back to warrior duties soon.” Her eyes softened as she watched her kits run around. “They’ll be apprentices soon. Perhaps we can go on a patrol together with one or two of them when they’re old enough.”

Pineblossom did not leave her. Instead, the queen settled down and began talking as if they were close friends. It, well, it wasnt too bad, Tawnyshadow decided. "You'va taken care of many of us before, it's ShadowClan's duty to take care of you and your kits. With so little warriors and even less prey, it's to be expected that every warrior has to work hard. Don't feel pressured to leave the nursery soon," she replied automatically, recalling familiar words that had once been said with all her heart. They were but a proper response now. It didnt quite feel enough, so she added, "I've enjoyed helping you take care of your kits, even if it's just bringing prey." Yes, that additional line, it felt right, even though she knew she didnt have to say it.
The thought of joining, no, being invited to patrol with Pineblossom and her kits was surprising. Did Pineblossom not care that she might bring harm to her children? Tawnyshadow didnt say anything, just nodded.

“I truly appreciate you helping out with that,” Pineblossom replied warmly. “Have you been well, though? We haven’t spoken together in a while with how busy I’ve become.” She looked towards Tawnyshadow. There always seems to be a heaviness to her that Pineblossom can’t identify, but it has always felt rude to ask directly. “I want to know what’s been going on with you.”

Tawnyshadow was not used to such caring questions. She had not been asked how she was doing by Sagestone, Moondancer, or even Sunflare. She had not expected such questions to be directed at her of all cats, and so never noticed that something was missing until she was given it. Did this mean that Pineblossom cared about her? And that her friends and mate did not? No, surely not. She shook her head to clear her thoughts, putting such confusing questions aside for the moment.
"I'm fine," she replied, then found that it wasn't quite what she wanted to say. "I miss my kits," she corrected herself, pelt flushing with embarrassment at having admitted such vurnarable emotions. She was a warrior, she shouldn't let her emotions get in the way of her duties. Whether she missed her kits didn't matter, at least that was what she insisted on telling herself.

Pineblossom smiled sympathetically and she watched as her kits tumbled around in their play. She murmured, “I miss Honeylight a lot too…I’m not sure that feeling ever quite goes away.” Pineblossom looked back at Tawnyshadow. “I’m sorry, though. It’s always a painful feeling.” Pineblossom leaned against Tawnyshadow briefly, offering a comforting touch before she straightened again, in case Tawnyshadow did not like prolonged touch.

Honeylight. Tawnyshadow had almost forgot that the warrior had been Pineblossom's son, though not by blood. Had she been so deep in self-pity that she had missed the grief of the cats around her? Guilt churned in her, and she found herself at a loss for words to comfort her friend. How useless was she, that she couldn't even return a kind gesture that had been given to her out of good will?
... Ah. When had she ever thought of comforting someone as being useful? The sudden realization made the warrior freeze. When had she begin to feel bad for others' grief? Her previous words thrown at her clanmates, once words she had believed with all her heart, now seemed like hurtful claws and poison. Had she really been that cruel?
Tawnyshadow was brought back by the touch of Pineblossom's body. It lasted only for a few heartbeats, but she found herself wanting more. "...I'm sorry," The silver tortoiseshell finally managed to say. Was she too late, just like she had been with Skunkpaw?

Pineblossom shook her head. “It’s alright. But thank you,” she told her fellow warrior. “You know, I get rather cooped up in the nursery. If you ever want to visit, even if it’s just to talk and let me know what’s going on in the clan, I would appreciate it.” She didn’t know if Tawnyshadow got lonely, but she often saw her by her lonesome around the clan. Pineblossom didn’t have many cats she could consider a friend, and she would not be against earning a new one.

That... that was an offer to talk to Pineblossom more often, wasn't it? Why would the queen want something to do with her anway? Tawnyshadow had so much on her mind, so many things she had to question about herself. She wanted to run away right this moment to answer them all. "Thank you, I'll be sure to drop by," she forced herself to keep her head up and meet Pineblossom's gaze. She managed a weak smile, praying the queen wouldn't talk for much longer. She just wasn't used to hold a conversation for so long.

Pineblossom smiled and looked back towards her kits. She didn’t keep up the conversation anymore, and there was silent permission for Tawnyshadow to leave if she needed to go do anything else more important. For now, though, Pineblossom was happy to just sit with Tawnyshadow in silent company while she watched after the kits.
