Silverpaw

A squirrel had been stupid enough to brave the marsh. Whether it fled from ThunderClan's forest across the Thunderpath or had taken the easier route from SkyClan-- Silverpaw didn't care. He had seen it, caught in the mud, and had dropped into a dead lurch to pursue. With twisted luck, it wormed itself free moments before he could sink his claws into it and shot off squealing. There were few trees in this part of the marsh, and what stood was brittle and dying; there was nowhere for it to escape. Silverpaw raced it down with dogged desperation, lengthening his stride as far as he could to compensate for the infuriating distance the stupid overgrown rodent kept from him, just outside the distance he knew he could leap.

Almost without notice, firs and pines shot out of the ground around him. SIlverpaw was blind to them, focused solely on his quarry, and he would have sailed clean across the border the squirrel had led him to if it hadn't diverted course. Rather than running straight, it bolted for a nearby tree, scrabbling up it with scream after terrified scream.

And, in a moment of madness, Silverpaw gathered his weight and sprang after it. His claws sank into the bark, and for a moment, he found purchase. Triumph exploded through his chest, and he was about to yowl preemptive victory when the wood splintered. He'd failed to actually ground himself on anything stable, clinging only to the slivers of bark that guarded the tree's heart, and with a crack, he toppled back to the forest floor.

It wasn't a far drop, but he felt his head spin when he hit the ground, and his shoulder panged immediately. Wincing, Silverpaw forced himself to roll over, spitting pine needles out of his mouth and shaking them from a fur. His stomach growled as if to emphasize his loss, and, furious, he spun on the tree he'd fell from, throwing his head back to shout, "I didn't want you anyway! Stupid piece of carrion," into the boughs, caught up in his moment of fury and heedless of where he stood on the border.

Throw my better self overboard, shoot at him when he comes up for air.Art credit

Bearpaw

Gender: Male
Rank: Apprentice

Bearpaw was balanced rather precariously among the boughs and branches of a very tall tree, his heart thudding in his chest. He’d always been somewhat afraid of heights, but until now, he’d never realized just how deep this fear ran. To be completely honest, he’d only climbed trees once - when Storm was showing him new battle moves. That was different, though, the tree had been much closer to the ground then.

Bearpaw glanced down, shuddered, and dug his claws deeper into the bark. He’d certainly bitten off more than he could chew, that much was certain. Ugh, he was a pretty lousy apprentice, wasn’t he? What kind of Skyclan cat was afraid to hunt much less climb in the trees? That was literally their thing! They were climbers!

Regardless…he couldn’t bring himself to go any higher. Snarling under his breath, Bearpaw examined the branches, trying to puzzle out a way to get down. As he peered down between the branches, movement from the forest floor caught his attention - a squirrel! But…his eyes narrowed. What was it running from? Shortly after, a foreign tom raced by and the young tom's blood instantly ran hot.

Who was idiotic enough to even try to hunt on their territory? Didn’t they know that Skyclan was massive now and stronger than ever before? They could easily crush a lone trespasser. Bearpaw’s lips curved into a grim smile, and he edged his way onto a lower branch, tail tip twitching. Well, nobody else was around - he’d have to take things into his own paws and make sure this tom knew he’d made a mistake.

Silently, the brown and white apprentice observed as the trespasser’s quarry flung itself towards a tree, racing up the trunk with tiny, deft paws. Hah. What a laughable attempt. He snickered quietly at the tom’s fury, still silently making his way along the length of a long branch that stretched over the thief’s head. Claws flexing, Bearpaw thought back to Stormwatcher’s training - back when he’d learned how to ambush from the trees. It felt like moons ago.

Well, it was a good thing he’d been trying to familiarize himself with climbing trees. This was the perfect chance to put that new skill to good use. Tensing his back legs, Bearpaw kicked off, descending on the silvery tom with bared teeth and a growl rumbling in his chest. "Didn’t want it?" He snarled. "Then why are you here?" He pressed the side of the tom’s face into the soil, claws digging into his exposed cheek. Shadowclan clearly had no sense if they were willing to hunt on Skyclan land.
