Kitespring ducked into the Beech Copse, searching the treetops for prey.
With there being a lack of safe fish to catch in the river, the russet-furred she-cat immediately turned her eyes to the Beech Copse. Squirrels and birds, despite being difficult for a RiverClan warrior like her to catch, would at least be more plentiful than the River was currently. Which means we can bring something back.
She turned back at Poppyshine, giving her a hopeful smile. Kitespring couldn't think of the right words that were worth saying at that point, but she hoped that they could bring home a few pieces of prey for the clan.
Searching for any signs of prey on the ground, Kitespring caught wind of a squirrel (maybe? It was some kind of rodent, at least) nearby. "Poppyshine, I smell prey," she said, before padding towards the direction of the scent.
Eventually, Kitespring spotted a small mouse on the ground, its tiny nose trying to track something as well. I got to be careful. The russet she-cat soon crouched down into her hunter's crouch, before silently stepping towards the mouse. She sidestepped every tiny branch that she saw nearby as she slowly made her way through the cover to get closer to it. "StarClan, please," she muttered under her breath.
When Kitespring noticed the mouse scurry towards her, she saw her chance. Pouncing at it, Kitespring caught it between her paws. She ca-
Nip it, nip it, nip it!
Quickly nipping it in the neck, Kitespring breathed a sigh of relief. RiverClan had a mouse now. That could at least feed one apprentice for... a meal. That's not nearly enough. Still, it was something, and it meant that this patrol could at least not be back without anything. Grabbing the dead mouse, she sped her way back to where she had left Poppyshine.

Poppyshine was glad to have her dear friend Kitespring with her as they searched for prey. The clan was aching for food with the river poisoned, and the prey in the beech copse have been sparce too—no doubt due to all the predators of the area hunting here now that the river was polluted.
She watched Kitespring descend onto a mouse and Poppyshine smiled. It was good to see that their warriors were still skilled in catching prey, even if they couldn’t use their usual method of fishing. She purred, “Good job Kitespring!” Poppyshine turned her head, wondering if she would be able to do the same. She did most of her hunting on land, so she had the experience, but did she have the luck that was needed in this harsh season?
It didn’t take too long for her to smell a squirrel, and a moment later, she spotted it near a low tree. Poppyshine treaded as carefully as she could, but then her stomach growled like a roaring beast. Poppyshine winced and could only watch as the squirrel’s attention snapped towards her and it darted into the bramble of the tree.
Poppyshine sighed and let her head drop for a moment before she lifted it again and smiled with embarrassment coating her features. “Perchstar always told me that hunting on an empty stomach was a bad idea, and I can see why now.”
Poppyshine tried to catch a squirrel but was unsuccessful. -5SP.
With Poppyshine's sheepish gaze after her missed catch, Kitespring smiled warmly. "It's okay," she said. "You'll get the next one." If only it was that easy, of course. Prey had been scarce since the waters were poisoned, which meant that there was no guarantee that they'd even walk away with anything more than what they had. StarClan, please lead us to the prey we need to survive this disaster.
Searching the clearing, she caught the scent of a vole nearby. Making her way towards it, Kitespring crouched down, before stalking it down. As the vole hid in the bushes, Kitespring pounced at it. The rodent made its way away from her, but the russet she-cat batted it with her left forepaw, stunning it for just enough for her to pin it to the ground with her right. That was close.
Quickly nipping it at the neck - she really hoped she wouldn't lose a piece of prey from not killing it properly - she murmured a silent thanks to StarClan, before bringing it back to Poppyshine. How was she doing so well right now?
Somehow, some way, it felt like her weaknesses became strengths in the famine. She found herself toeing the line of starvation in good times, having to remind herself to eat? It helped her feel good enough - or at least normal enough - to hunt well. And right now, we need everything I have to get this done.
Kitespring attempted to catch a vole, costing 5 stamina. Hunt was a success!

Poppyshine smiled and nodded at Kitespring’s encouragement. They had to make sure to bring back as much prey as they could, so she couldn’t give up after one bad try. As they split up to search again, Poppyshine kept her mouth open to breathe in for any scents until she landed on a mouse. Hunger dug at her stomach and she gave a short prayer to StarClan to not let her body get in the way of her hunt again.
She crouched down and approached carefully. Careful…careful…!
Poppyshine got much closer this time around, but in the end, she was a bit clumsy in her attempt to pounce and the rodent managed to squeak by with only a small snap of the tail. Poppyshine let out a disappointed sigh as the mouse escaped beneath some bushes that she couldn’t run after.
She turned and saw that Kitespring had another catch in her jaw. “Good job,” she meowed. She really did mean it, although she wished that she could be more useful in this hunt as the deputy. It wasn’t her fault, as all prey were especially skittish with the amount of predators about. Perhaps if it was a frog she had come across then she could have caught it, but she didn’t trust frogs for the same reason she didn’t trust fish; their home was the river and that made them dangerous.
Poppyshine tried to catch a mouse…Unsuccessful! -5 SP.
Kitespring's elation quickly mellowed out at Poppyshine's face. Obviously, she wasn't having as much success as Kitespring was on this hunting patrol. Placing her vole in the hole with the mouse she caught, she gave Poppyshine a reassuring smile. As the two split off to try and hunt again, Kitespring stalked what she thought was a scent of a squirrel nearby. StarClan, please.
Noticing a squirrel nearby, Kitespring crouched down, stalking the squirrel. It felt normal, like she was doing the same thing over and over again. This time, though, she was less lucky. The squirrel caught her scent and scurried up the tree. Kitespring sprinted at the tree as it scurried up, but without any climbing experience she found herself stuck at the bottom, snarling at the squirrel above. Guess I can't be lucky all the time.
Kitespring attempted (and failed) to catch a squirrel, costing 5 stamina.

Poppyshine could already feel exhaustion pulling at her muscles as they continued to hunt. She, like most of her clanmates, grew tired more easily with how little food there was to go around. She really wanted to try and bring something back, though, and so she tried not to lose all of her stamina quite yet. She spotted Kitespring fail to grab at a squirrel, but she had already caught two pieces of prey, so there was not too much disappointment to be had. Poppyshine looked carefully for a mouse and tried to pounce at it too. However, just like before, she just narrowly missed it and it scurried off with a loud squeak.
“It seems I have no luck today,” she meowed with a sigh. Poppyshine returned to Kitespring’s side and smiled wearily. “We probably won’t have much more luck here after I let so many mice get away. We should head back with the ones you caught before a predator catches scent…two is better than none, after all.”
Poppyshine attempted to catch a mouse but failed. -5SP.
