Poppyshine had been recovering in the medicine den from a sore throat when Drizzlepool was brought in, terribly sick. It had not lasted long before she passed away, and Poppyshine felt awful for it. Drizzlepool was a brand-new warrior, and she had been taken from them because of something as simple as illness. She had not known the warrior terribly well, but she was still one of her clanmates, and she mourned her loss.
When she recovered, though, it was apparent that life still had to proceed. She carried the heaviness of her lost clanmate in her heart as she approached the Willow Branch. Swanpaw had not been Drizzlepool’s apprentice for long, but she would require a new mentor so she could be trained to face the forest. Drizzlepool was gone; there was no use dwelling on it further.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting,” Poppyshine announced.
Her mentor had fallen ill seemingly the moment she'd been apprenticed. Days spent in the medicine den meant Swanpaw had little to do but try and tag along with other warriors or apprentices while trying to push down a growing sense of frustration that her own mentor was unable to teach her at all. Not that she had particularly liked Drizzlepool, and Swanpaw was certain the feeling was mutual, but the apprentice still wanted to learn. Now Drizzlepool was dead, and she'd been left without a mentor at all. It grated on the pale she-cat. Most of her siblings were already far into their training, and she hadn't wanted to be left behind. Now, though...
Poppyshine's call for a clan meeting broke through Swanpaw's thoughts, and she dutifully headed toward the willow branch, gazing up at the deputy. There were plenty of kits in the nursery to be apprenticed, she knew... But it wouldn't hurt to hope for a new mentor for herself, right?
Young Swanpaw appeared at the foot of the Willow Branch without pause. Poppyshine was used to kits often being uncertain if they could attend the meeting before their ceremony, but Swanpaw was old enough to not have such reservations. Poppyshine locked eyes with her and offered a nod to her, indicating that she would be needed for this ceremony.
“RiverClan, we honor our lost cats. The loss of Drizzlepool has weighed heavily on us all, not just for the loss of a new warrior, but also a friend. However, that does not mean that time does not continue to march forward…Swanpaw, please step forward.” She watched the young apprentice and Poppyshine wished that she did not have to go through this ceremony for a second time. However, Poppyshine was certain that her new mento would see her through to warriorhood. “Swanpaw, you must still continue your training to join the warrior ranks. To ensure a successful training, I will be your new mentor. I shall aid you in making up for what time has been lost in your training.”
Poppyshine leapt down from the branch and approached Swanpaw so she could touch her nose to the apprentice's.
Swanpaw's cautious hope turned to excitement as the purpose of this meeting became clear. Her name was called, and the fluffy apprentice was quick to step forward, blue eyes fixed on the deputy as she spoke. It wasn't her warrior ceremony, but she'd have a mentor. She'd be able to get back on track with her training. She wouldn't be stuck in camp while a dying cat was cooped up in the medicine den. Poppyshine was someone who was capable, or she wouldn't be deputy. To be trained by her would be a far cry from what her experience had been so far, she hoped.
"I'll do my best, Poppyshine. When do we start?" She was excited to begin properly training again, and wanted to make up for lost time. Maybe she could get up to speed with her siblings, with the deputy as her mentor.
Swanpaw looked excited and eager. It made Poppyshine beam at her while the other cats bustled around in the little crowd. She replied, “We’ll begin tomorrow. I’ll awaken you early, and we’ll pick up where you left off.” Which, if Poppyshine was being honest with herself, was likely almost-nothing. Drizzlepool had fallen ill so quickly, and while she was sure that other warriors were teaching Swanpaw things here and there, this would basically be the start of her apprenticeship. Poppyshine was determined to not fail her.
