Echopaw stuck his head out of the medicine cats den, mumbling something under his breath about not wanting to stay in the stuffy den all day when he saw a flash of brown fur pass him. Instinctively he opened his maw to call her name but found himself hesitating.
Why?
They had been friends almost the same amount of time that he had known his own mother. But still ever since his return from captivity he found a distance between himself and his old denmate. It was a silly feeling, he knew it to be so. Huffing he forced himself to chase after her.
"Acornstem, my friend." he called a smile on his maw, "Do you have some time to spare for me?" he purred, his voice as playful as the day they met. As he looked at her he saw the kitten who he showed his rock collection to, while she was much taller and stronger she had the same understanding gaze she always had. He saw the apprentice that tried to free him from captivity and the apprentice that took care of his mentor and mother while he was gone. He was eternally grateful for her and he was even more proud to call her his friend now that she was deputy.

Acornstem had been doing her daily rounds - she tried to do her best to speak with her Clanmates when given the chance. Her eyes were scanning the camp - she hadn't even realized what den she had walked past by or the familiar face poking out of it until the sound of pawsteps started behind her and she turned to see Echopaw approaching with a smile. She blinked a few times in surprise - a sudden wave of guilt washing over her. In all of her focusing on her Clanmates, she...Well, she had kinda neglected to speak with Echopaw and Fawnshine?
And even before she had become deputy... It wasn't something she was proud of or even happy with, the distant that had formed between the two. When Echopaw had gone missing, when she was forced to fear the same fate befell her friend as did her mentor...She...She had hoped, prayed for his return and when he did, she found... She was a coward - had she been afraid he had been changed in his time away? Could she not face him, feeling she had failed to protect him when they had been together when the Twolegs had invaded yet she had managed to escape?
So often did she want to speak to him but she had always hesitated for one reason or another - excuse after excuse minus when their paths would cross for duties. But now...Her heart swelled as Echopaw called her a friend as she raised her tail in happy greeting, feeling the sides of her eyes prickle with surprise tears of joy and relief as she blinked them away with a hearty purr. "Of course, Echopaw! I'll always have time for you, no matter what," she meowed, swishing her tail back and forth. "I'm...Sorry I haven't been around to speak with you - I could claim my deputy duties kept me busy but...Ah, that is no excuse. I hope things have been well for you?"
