"maple, at your service!!"

A fluffy brown kit, about the size of a small boulder peered into the apprentice's den with wide yellow eyes. All the apprentices were out hunting, training, or on patrols so the kit was free to step inside.

Tangled ferns had woven themselves into walls over time, creating a cozy space for several cats to make their nests. Maplekit confidently made her way to the back of the den with one goal in mind. By the end of the day, she was going to make each nest as comfortable as possible. She could just imagine how happy that would make all the apprentices feel! After all their hard works and training, they deserve the very best beds to sleep in.

Maplekit started with the nest nearest to her, pushing and pulling, prodding at the moss beds. These nests sure could use a lot of shaping! The kit then realized she would be needing much more supplies for her goal to succeed.

"But where am I going to get all that stuffs?" Maplekit was crestfallen to think that her goal had failed before it had even truly begun.

Comfreyheart

Comfreyheart quietly stretched herself out in a corner of camp where the morning wind passed through. She had her eyes closed, trying to gain peace, but that was hard when there always felt like there was something to do. So instead she watched the camp. That way she was at least possibly contributing. Like in case there was a break-in, or… breakout.

The warrior raised her neck to see the apprentice den better. Was that a kitten sneaking in? Now there was nothing inherently dangerous about a kit exploring, it was quite common in fact. But with all the apprentices out training or on patrols… a kitten could cause a fair bit of mischief. A specific memory came to mind of when she herself was a young kit. Her brother, Darkspirit, had raided the medicine den and ran his stained paws all over camp. A terrible waste of herbs. Her brother had regarded her as a buzzkill for not finding it funny. Back then she’d been hurt by it, but if that’s what she was, so be it.

She picked herself up and over to the den. “But where am I going to get all that stuffs?” she heard someone squeak. The little brown she-kit didn’t seem to be causing trouble, but something did seem wrong. The kitten sounded devastated, as if she’d failed something. It broke her heart to see. “What’s the matter?” she asked. “Do you need help?”

In her disappointment, Maplekit had not noticed someone coming into the den. She jumped with surprise, reddish-brown fur puffing up, making her seem larger than she already was.

"I wanted to surprise all the apprentices with new comfier, bestest of the best beds, but I don't have any moss! Or feathers! Or pebbles for decorations... Or moss...and feathers..." she trailed off, ears lowering in despair.

The kit's grand vision of her friends, Pennypaw and Sagepaw coming into their den after a day of training and patrolling was slowly beginning to seem too difficult to accomplish herself. She was only a kit, after all.

What a sweet kit, she thought. “Chin up dear, don't be discouraged.” The warrior took in the apprentices’ nests and nodded thoughtfully. “Let’s find some moss and feathers then, yeah?” she offered, “My sister Fawnshine has some moss in her stores. And we could find feathers by the fresh-kill pile.” Comfreyheart turned to look outside the den, her fluffy black tail flicking back and forth excitedly. Finally, something useful to do, even if it was as small as helping a kit out. “I caught a nice jay earlier- good feathers. Shall we?”

Maplekit felt a whole lot more relieved when Comfreyheart seemed to have a plan. Fawnshine? Sister? The fluffy kit hadn't known the two were related. The warrior had great ideas though. In fact, the older molly looked just as excited to carry out the plan as herself. "Let's go! Pennypaw and Sagepaw might be back any second now, so we hafta hurry!" she mewed, dashing outside to go ahead and search the pile for the aforementioned bird.

"Found it! Woah.. its feathers are so pretty!" The kit glanced back at the warrior with the blue-feathered bird at her paws.

“Nice!” she purred with a laugh. “May I see?” Comfreyheart lay down next to Maplekit and gently took the jay out of her paws. One by one she plucked feathers from its slightly mangled wing. She found it funny that when she had snatched it out of the sky she hadn’t expected she’d need to preserve its beauty. “Alright,” she said to Maplekit with a pile of feathers, “Take these and decorate the nests as much as you’d like. And I’ll go borrow some moss from the medicine den.” She hoped it wasn’t too many feathers- maybe just two trips if the kitten was ambitious enough with carrying them. “Or I’ll help you if you’d like,” she offered.

Maplekit watched the warrior pluck the feathers one by one with wondrous eyes. It was interesting to see how colorful and bright birds were, while cats... not so much. Soon enough, Comfreyheart had accumlated a lovely pile of blue. "It's a pile of sky!" the kit mewed, dipping her paw into it. "It's okay! You go get that moss. It's very important for our work!"

With one paw sweeping the feathers onto the other, Maplekit quickly realized it would be difficult to bring them all over to the nests unless she figured out a way to carry them all at once. The problem was, these precious feathers were fragile and easily escaped her grip. Suddenly, an idea popped into the kit's head, one that she would consider to be genius.

By the time Comfreyheart returned with the moss, the kit was no longer just a fluffy brown kit. Spots of blue decorated her pelt, sticking out in tufts around her neck and sides. Maplekit placed one last feather in place before noticing the warrior's return. "Why aren't there any blue cats? I think we would look absolutely fabulous in blue!" she grinned.

The warrior nodded with a playfully serious expression. “I won’t let you down!” she meowed as if Maplekit was her commander. Leaving the kitten and her pile of sky, Comfreyheart quietly ducked into the medicine den. She promised to bring back more fresh moss later, and with that quickly made work of her mission. With soft moss cradled in her raven jaw, the molly padded back to Maplekit.

Brown fluff now spotted blue, Comfreyheart held back a laugh. What a creative solution. While leaning down to drop the moss she processed the question. “Hmm… Well, I think you’re quite right. Thunderclan would look beautiful strutting around with their flashy, jay-feathered coats.” The ebony-furred molly slowly and gracefully spun, offering Maplekit’s imagination a chance to picture blue on her pelt. “But… I also think it’d make it harder to catch prey. Stealth is a hunter’s best tool, you know.”

Comfreyheart looked over to the newly decorated nests. The kitten had done a good job placing feathers. She could see the effort and care put in. The warrior quietly sat down and nudged the moss pile closer to Maplekit, not too sure how particular the kit might be. She’d hate to ruin the little one’s hard work.
