"We begin, then." Graywind nodded at her apprentice. She would start off slow this time, Violetpaw was still learning, after all. The swipe of Graywind's paw was without warning, but given that they had just talked about this, she should at least expect something.

The swipe at Violetpaw was unexpected, and the apprentices head was spinning from all the new information she was trying to absorb. Instinctively, she attempted to duck out of the way, which resulted in Graywind brushing her whiskers instead of making contact with her face. She tried to use her mentor's lack of contact to distract her, hopefully giving Violetpaw the time to knock her off balance. However, experience showed in the warrior's stance when she was unmoved by the apprentice's failed counterattack.

"Dodging if you can is good, though it's difficult to both dodge and do damage at the same time." Violetpaw had been quick on her paws though, and that was a valuable skill to have even if her paw hadn't actually connected. She reached out again with a sheathed paw to lightly tap the apprentice on the shoulder. "And remember, you can't dodge everything, either."

Violetpaw nodded and tried something new, trying to shake off the embarrassment of her failed attack. She instead went for an old classic, using her small size to move quickly around Graywind and grabbing the warrior's fluffy tail between her teeth. She pulled, not too hard but enough to throw her mentor off slightly. It was a common kit move and definitely not the most noble of tricks, but she desperately wanted something reliable after her last failure.

Violetpaw was quicker than Graywind expected, and the sensation of teeth in her tail and being pulled backward was never a pleasant thing even in a friendly sparring session. She was here to train Violetpaw though, and the trick, while dirty, wasn't a bad idea in a fight. "Good. Now follow up on it."

Violetpaw felt bad now. She could tell Graywind was going to grin and bear it for the sake of her training, so knew she shouldn't waste the opportunity regardless of how she felt. Somewhat half-heartedly, the apprentice swung a sheathed paw at her mentor's shoulder, muttering and apology under her breath before she retreated, ready for the next attack now the grey warrior had regained her balance.

"Don't apologize." Graywind had caught her mumbled apology, and wanted none of it. Having regained her balance, the warrior leaped for the nearest tree, using it as a launching pad of sorts as she leapt for her apprentice with carefully sheathed paws. Violetpaw had pulled a trick, now it was her turn. And this was one all Skyclanners should know.

Violetpaw had to bite her tongue to stop her from apologising to Graywind again. She watched with amazement as the fluffy warrior leapt from the tree, bowling the apprentice over with the force of it. It winded her, and she couldn't fight back against the weight on top of her, no matter how hard she tried to slip through her mentor's paws.

This time her apprentice wasn't quick enough to dodge or get out from under her paws, and Graywind gently tapped her shoulder with a paw. She could tell that Violetpaw was beginning to tire from the day's work, and if this was where it ended, that was fine with the warrior. "Take note of that - once you learn to start climbing trees, it'll come in useful." She mewed, "You've done well, for your first day."

As much as Violetpaw wanted to push herself to the limit in order to impress Graywind, when the grey warrior dealt the final blow of the spar and congratulated her, the apprentice knew there was no way she could carry on. Panting, Violetpaw sat back on her haunches, muscles aching from the work of the day. "Thanks Graywind. And you've done pretty amazing for your first day as a mentor, I think." Her first day of training was underway, and soon she knew she'd have more strength and stamina, and would be able to do this for many more hours.

"I'm glad you think so." Graywind grinned at her apprentice, though she was also deeply relieved to hear that. "Come on, let's get our prey and head back to camp." The spar alone would have been enough exercise without the hunting on top of it, Graywind knew from experience. They could head back to camp and Violetpaw could rest. She'd done well today.
