barking up the wrong tree

The hunting patrol had gone in different directions. Rosepaw had tracked her prey to the edge of the fields by the road and was stalking it through the long grass, closer, closer... until the roar of a car startled it away.

Frustration quickly turned to alarm as the car stopped and a human stepped out, walking around to open another door from which a worse scent wafted out ~ dog.

It's noisy barks and whines were a warning to Rosepaw as the human went about freeing it. With the car stopped beside the otherwise quiet road, the human was relaxed and distracted as it let the dog out.

Rosepaw's single golden eye was blown wide as it darted around in panic. There was no where to hide on the moor. The dog sniffed around in the grass, catching scent of Rosepaw just as she spied a tall pine tree on the other side of the road.

The dog lunged forward in chase with its tongue lolling gleefully. The rosy-furred she-cat shot across the hard surface in a long-legged blur, forgetting the scent markers that she crossed in her panic.

With a mighty push from the ground, Rosepaw leaped desperately up the tree trunk. The dog was on her heels, its stinking breath catching in her fur.

She thanked stars she had been brave enough to take her SkyClan friend Dawnfeather's offer to learn to leap in a tree. The dog bounced barking up at Rosepaw where she perched unsteadily on a low branch.

The apprentice's legs shook. But she was bold enough to give it a good swipe across its nose as it jumped up at her. Rosepaw hissed defensively.

The human's voice reached Rosepaw's buzzing ears as it hurried to the dog, calling for it worriedly. The dog whined in pain at the scratch Rosepaw had drawn blood with and allowed the human to pull it away.

After the car had rumbled off with the human and dog inside it, Rosepaw waited until she stopped shaking and leaped softly to the ground. She stunk of the dog, it's blood, and her own fear, but she was triumphant.

"Take that!" she exclaimed quietly, looking ruffled but very pleased with herself. She hadn't given any thought to the dark trees that cast looming shadows over her, on the wrong side of the thunderpath.

Tawnyshadow was patrolling the Windclan border when she saw the figure in the distant. A dog yapped at the figure, who was perched precariously on a branch of a pine tree. The cat swiped at the dog, which yelped and ran away, back to its Twoleg. Tawnyshadow watched the cat leap down from its perch and land on needle-strewn ground. Shadowclan territory. The warrior slipped out of the shadows, yellow eyes focused on the she-cat like a hawk's. This cat smelled faintly of Twolegs, but it was covered by the winds and rabbit scents only a Windclan cat would have. The cat looked much older than her, but had a much softer body. "I didn't know Windclan was accepting rouges now," She mewed, circling the pitiful Windclan 'Warrior'. Did that code-breaking clan know no bounds?

Rosepaw only noticed there was someone behind her when a cat spoke. A young warrior, grey-striped, ginger, and white, had slid silently out of the shadows. How long had she been there?!

Hopefully long enough to see the dog and understand what brought Rosepaw here. The ShadowClan warrior was glaring intensely.

"Oh~" Rosepaw startled. "~WindClan don't accept any cat who wasn't born to the moor." She tipped her head to the side, confused. "You didn't want to join, did you?" she asked sweetly.

This cat... was as mouse-brained as a kittypet, that's for sure. The mere suggestion that any Shadowclan cat would leave their clan to join that- that gang of rouges they called Windclan was outrageous. Tawnyshadow snarled, and her claws lashed out to scratch the she-cat's ear. The tip of the ear came clean off, leaving blood to splatter all over the she-cat's face. Tawnyshadow snarled, "Get off Shadowclan territory, now. Windclan has done enough without almost leading a dog into an enemy's territory as well!"

Wrong answer. The ShadowClan warrior snarled, lashing out with claws unsheathed before Rosepaw could blink.

The blow scratched Rosepaw's left ear. She felt it tear and the warmth of her own blood spatter her face.

Shock, pain, and shame pricked behind Rosepaw's eyes. Despite this, she kept her chin up.

She met the warrior's angry hawk-like eyes steadily. Her single golden eye glistened with hurt but a sensible thought told her the dog concerned the other Clan, too.

"The dog briefly escaped from it's human. Fleeing here safely alerted the hu- uh, two-leg. They are both gone. There is no danger to ShadowClan, now." Her voice shook, but she managed a small nod of respect.

The look of fear on the rosy cat's face was more than enough to make Tawnyshadow's lip curl. How disgusting; could this kittypet not handle even a little scratch. At least this will teach her a lesson. Despite the she-cat's fear, she still correctly analyzed her mistake and made the proper apologies for them. Tawnyshadow jerked her head towards the border. "Go. And don't come back," She ordered. The she-cat before her was tresspassing, yes, but as long as she'll leave without further trouble there was no need for Tawnyshadow to waste her energy.

Rosepaw did not need to be told a third time. Despite the warrior's lip curled in disgust, and Rosepaw's own blood spattered on her face... There was also a mutual acquiescence to respect and peace.

She turned with a soft swish of her wispy tail, trotting with polite efficiency across the border, looking both ways twice, before crossing the road. She did not look back.
