"Hey. Wake up." Lightly, but with enough force to shift the apprentice, Jayfrost nudged Lightningpaw in his nest, waiting until he saw him stir to speak again. "Wake up. We're gonna do something." Looming over the apprentice, he waited until he was fully away before he left, muttering something over his shoulder about getting something from the fresh-kill pile before leaving.

The sun was just barely peeking over the horizon, casting long, pale shadows across every corner of Windclan territory. There was a chill to the morning's air, a welcome one. Jayfrost found comfort in the crisp temperatures. Anything more cold and he'd still be in his nest, though, trying to keep in as much warmth as he could.

Shuffling from behind him let him know that Lightningpaw had risen, and he merely faced him with an even expression. He felt like he should be more upbeat and lively, just as his own mentor had been, but he couldn't muster the energy. Turning away, he padded towards the camp entrance, waiting with half-lidded eyes for the apprentice to finish whatever it was he needed to do. It wasn't his business, really - or, it wouldn't be unless the apprentice made him wait long.

Thankfully, Jayfrost didn't have to wait long for Lightningpaw to join him. With a flick of his tail, he wordlessly led the apprentice out onto the moors, not bothering to look behind him and make sure he was keeping up. It wasn't as if the warrior was even able to go that fast anyways, not with his lame leg.

When Lightningpaw caught up, he looked over to him. "We're going to hunt. I guess you don't really know how yet." They approached a ridge overlooking a vast area. Hares could be seen hopping around below them. He should probably show an example, he figured. "I'm gonna catch one of those. You can watch, but you'll learn more from trying it yourself." Despite appearing nonchalant and capable on the outside, Jayfrost was worried about failing to catch a hare in front of the apprentice. Being a role model was a responsibility he didn't desire, yet he was given anyways. Channeling his anxiety into energy, he quickened his pace as he padded down the ridge, only slowing down when he reached the tall grasses at it's base. The hares weren't far, he knew. So, when he could see a sliver of movement through the blades of grass, he lunged, but the rabbit had run into a burrow before he'd even emerged from the grass.

A screech rang out. A shadow travelled across the grassy area. Jayfrost knew why the rabbits had fled, but he wasn't able to save himself before razor-sharp talons ripped through his fur. He let out a cry, dislodging the hawk's claws from his flesh. "Lightningpaw! Hawk!" A hawk on the apprentices first day out. Fantastic.

A pang of guilt hit Jayfrost as he saw his barely-trained apprentice leap onto the hawk. A hawk that he was barely prepared to fight. The guilt was followed by resentment for Smallbean. The fact that he assigned him such an obligation and made him feel this guilt to begin with made him roll his eyes.

Not letting a moment go to waste, out of fear that the moment would lead to Lightningpaw's suffering, the large tom reached upwards, struggling to pull the hawk to the ground with his lame leg. Once he was able, though, he placed his weight on the bird, making sure it's talons were facing the ground. He stood atop it as it struggled, keeping it to the dirt as long as he could. He faced Lightningpaw. "While I pin it, try going for its wings. If you get the wings, it can't fly away." His voice was strained under the pressure of keeping the bird down. Might as well make it into a teaching moment, he supposed. That's what he was supposed to do.
