Adderdawn
The wind blew hard through Adderdawn’s fur, but the gusts weren’t unpleasant. The sun was bright and the air was warm and the stubborn wind carried the scents of fresh new life. For a little while, he let himself just stand and face the wind, breathing deep. There was plenty to worry about, but when he turned away from the breeze to look at his brother, Adderdawn decided he would worry later.
After pausing long enough to let Flutterpetal catch up to his side, Adderdawn padded onward, watching the moor roll around them. “There’s prey here,” he offered, eying the coarse shrubs around them. “Hares.” An ear flicked, he brushed against Flutterpetal briefly, and then Adderdawn slipped away. He dropped smoothly into a well-practiced crouch, creeping toward a patch of heather. He got halfway to it before he went still, ears flattening against his head. The scent of weasel hit him suddenly when he moved against the wind. Hackles rising, Adderdawn started to back slowly away, retreating back to Flutterpetal's side. "And weasels," he whispered, eyes narrowing. The hare he'd been tracking squealed, and out of the corner of his eye Adderdawn saw a streak of brown fur disappearing over a hill.
Adderdawn watched the brush for a silent moment before turning away, hoping to leave before it would take notice of them. The grass rustled again, and when he looked the weasel was rolling out of cover, flipping over itself and chittering loudly at them. Adderdawn stalked closer to it until he could dart forward just as it sprang up again, teeth catching around its neck.
Weasel appeared! Moor Runner is active for this fight. Adderdawn used Snap, dealing 10 damage and costing 7 SP.

New-leaf was almost single-pawedly making life seem livable for Flutterpetal. He'd barely felt real during leaf-bare, drifting along like a lost snowflake in the cold gusts that froze them for moons. But with the return of the vivid colored flowers, warmer sun and fresh scent of growing things, it seemed like everything terrible in his past could be blanketed in the bright green grass that was now re-emerging over the moors. It seemed like moving on was possible if the world had decided to do it, too. Today he was out with Adderdawn--his best friend, his brother, the only one who had remained by his side consistently, no matter what. They had never been separated, and never would be. The two of them were supposed to be on a hunting patrol, but every so often they stopped to breathe the winds. Being out here with the sunlight on his back and the breezes in his fur made him feel alive.
When Adder began to walk again, Flutterpetal followed. They were supposed to be hunting, after all. Though the Clan was no longer in danger of starving, as they had been for the entire previous season, it wouldn't be seemly to return to camp empty-pawed. And besides, the territory was practically coated with hares emerging from their frost-resistant burrows. He offered his brother an encouraging nod when he went out to begin hunting--then, a shocked blink when he mentioned weasels. Had another predator really come to ruin one of their patrols together yet again? At least a weasel was far less scary than an eagle or a dog. Still, the black-furred tom felt his heart begin to pound as the chittering little animal jumped out at Adderdawn, who swiftly caught it in his teeth. The danger had mostly been halted, but his limbs still felt shaky. At least his brother wasn't hurt. He'd gotten the weasel before it could get him.
His delay was far less than the two previous times as he approached the other tom. The weasel couldn't go anywhere, stuck like that. It only took a moment of consideration before Flutterpetal walked over and reared up on his hind legs, slamming it down onto the ground with the full force of his weight. He was careful not to harm Adder as he did so, but the weasel went limp. The combined blows had probably been too much for it. That had been easy... so why were his exhaled breaths so quick? He should say something to let his brother know he was okay. To shake off the strange feeling that was creeping up his spine. "We, uh... do we eat weasels?" he asked weakly, looking down pensively at the dead scrap of brown fur.
Flutterpetal used Upright Lock on Weasel, dealing 12 damage and costing 10 stamina. Weasel has been KOed.

Adderdawn
The weasel wasn’t left in his jaws for long. Flutterpetal came over to him, rising onto his hind legs, and Adderdawn slackened the pressure he held the weasel with just in time for his brother to put it to the ground. It might have twitched once or twice, but it was still once its body settled from the drop. Adderdawn stared down at it, whiskers quivering and lips curling from the taste of blood registering on his tongue, his own breath stuttering for a few moments.
“I… don’t think so,” he answered noncommittally. There wasn’t a reason they couldn’t, but the idea of trying made the sharp taste in his mouth worse. Adderdawn stared down at it quietly, lingering in death’s strange malaise before finally sighing and bending to pick the weasel up by the scruff. As carefully as he could, he dragged it back to the stretch of shrubbery it came flying out of, making sure it was well-covered by the heather before he started to back away. Something else would find it, a hawk maybe– but it didn’t have to be now.
Turning on his pads, Adderdawn made his way back to Flutterpetal, leaning gently against his brother’s side. “Thank you. I’m glad we didn’t get hurt this time.” Their luck with predators was rarely good. He could at least be grateful neither of them lost any blood this time. Lightly headbutting Flutterpetal’s neck, he went on, “We’ll find… something, though. Hopefully, not another weasel.” His nose wrinkled at his own dry joke. With a single snort to laugh, Adderdawn pushed them both onward, away from the small patch of bloodied grass.
Farther across the rolling land, entirely out of sight from the encounter, Adderdawn was pleased to see there was more prey elsewhere. A short distance away, he could see a rabbit, pulling greedily at patchy wildflowers. Better than that, when he searched the open horizon, he saw no sign of lurking danger. “I think we’ll be fine now,” he stated, mostly to convince himself. "Wish me luck. I'm going after that rabbit."
The rabbit was almost a sure catch. It stayed still while Adderdawn approached, only flinching when he kicked into a sprint. But two strides in, another animal shot of the flowers. Fangs caught the sunlight and matte brown scales lurched forward. The rabbit, squealing terribly, managed to sprint away just before the snake caught its throat. With a yelp of shock, Adderdawn skidded to a near-halt, claws flashing forward on frightened instinct. He felt his claws pierce its scales several times, but he didn't stay close long enough to watch it die. He backed up fast, eager to get away in case it wanted to strike back. Breaths short, he stared at the wildflowers, waiting to hear a hiss.
Adderdawn attempted to catch a rabbit... and summoned an adder. Adderdawn used Front Paw Strike and Swift Strike, dealing 17 (10+7) damage and costing 17 (7+10) SP.

Nothing came. There was no movement, either. Adderdawn looked down at his still unsheathed claws and back toward the adder's hidden... corpse, now. Ears lowering, he turned away. His heart was still racing, even though there was no threat now. "Be careful!" Adderdawn called over his shoulder, just starting to spin around to face his brother again when a flash of fur in the distance caught his eye. The rabbit was still running, still in sight but nearly gone. You! Adderdawn's tail flicked. He should have let it go, but he wanted to catch something. He wanted to not think about the fact they'd been attacked twice today, left behind two bodies that weren't prey. Bristling with abandon, Adderdawn shoved into a hard sprint, racing after it. Desperate paws swallowed the ground between them, and before he knew it, the rabbit was a whisker away from him. One more exaggerated stride, and he stretched out a forepaw to catch its leg. Squealing, it fell, and he was quick to nip the back of its neck. Adderdawn stood still, gathering his heaving breath, before picking the rabbit up and beginning the slow lope back.
Once he returned to Flutterpetal, he dropped the rabbit with a graceless huff. Adderdawn stared down at it, snorted, and swallowed around his still-short breath to talk. "Hunting wasn't always this... dangerous, was it?"
Adderdawn attempted to catch a rabbit... Catch successful! -3 SP.

Flutterpetal hadn't actually wanted to eat the weasel. He'd mostly asked in order to distract himself. However, Adderdawn's physical presence next to him was very comforting. He felt his tense muscles begin to relax when his brother leaned into his side. Their darkly colored furs meshed together in a reassuring, familiar sensation. His breathing regulated itself. The weasel was dead; it couldn't hurt them anymore. Neither of them had gotten hurt, anyway. This wasn't like the time with the eagle... they were older now. Stronger. Eventually Flutterpetal arrived back at reality, realizing that he hadn't really been paying attention to whatever his brother was murmuring. The sound of his voice had been enough. As the tom blinked himself back into the present, he heard Adderdawn's last sentence.
"Wish me luck. I'm going after that rabbit."
Flutterpetal nodded, feeling the chilly air take the place of his brother's warmth pressing against him. It would be selfish of him to ask his brother to stay like this with him any longer. They had come to hunt, after all... weasels shouldn't stop them. A single, small predator shouldn't scare him so much. "Right... good luck." Adderdawn was already gone.
He watched his brother run off, a dark splotch of shadow against the bright beiges and greens of the moors. Though they were both warriors of WindClan, he had always felt that his brother might be a little bit better at hunting than he was. Or perhaps that was just how highly he thought of Adder; everything he did seemed as warm and welcoming as the first rays of sun in new-leaf, beckoning to better times after moons of frigid darkness. Was he better at hunting, or did every thing that he did just seem better because of his aura of adoration? Others might have liked him, or even loved him, but to Flutterpetal, Adderdawn was everything. Morning and evening. Flower and stem. Water and wind. His brother and his best friend. Before and after calamity, the only one left.
A sudden yelp dashed Flutterpetal out of his pensive reverie. Adderdawn--was he okay? Distantly he could see his brother's form dart back in shock. Was it another weasel? Something else? Something worse? His heartbeat began to speed up again. Almost against his own will, he began to take a step forward. However, by the time he started moving, Adder was moving again as well. With a call to "be careful," he began sprinting in the opposite direction. There would be no way to catch up to him by now. So Flutterpetal settled back down, feeling uneasiness seep into his lungs as he strained his eyes, trying to watch. If anything was wrong, he would have said so... right? But, be careful of what?
Finally, an agonizingly long moment later, Adderdawn returned. A rabbit hung from his jaws. He seemed tired from his sprint... but there was something almost rueful in the stare of his eyes. His question was light and phrased like a joke, but Flutterpetal could tell it was sincere. He should answer the well-meaning question, he knew. Or he should at least offer congratulations on the catch. But without doing either, the black tom walked forward, burying his face in his brother's shoulder for a moment. They were both still here. Why did the world have to be so frightening? Why did every misstep and shock cause this much fear to run through him? Why, when he had lost so much already, did the world continue to tease him with the inevitability of losing his brother as well? A silent sigh ruffled his brother's soft, short fur. "Why are there always... weasels?" Flutterpetal asked quietly. The question was nearly unintelligible, he knew. It wasn't exactly what he'd wanted to ask. But whether it was a weasel, a snake, an eagle, a fox, an earthquake, Twolegs at Fourtrees, the sudden deaths of their friends and Clanmates... there was always something. Weasels were as good a name for them as any. Why were the stars determined to tie his paws to the ground?
